Nesting Hex Insert Wrench - One Ring Head for Many Bolt and Nut Sizes

A mechanic who works on hex bolts and nuts of many sizes carries a row of wrenches or a full socket set. This design puts the sizes inside one another. The head of the wrench is a ring holding a toothed sleeve, and inside the sleeve sits a group of thin hexagonal tubes nested like Russian dolls: the outside of each tube is the inside of the next. The innermost tube fits the smallest bolt; take it out, and the next tube's hex fits the next size up. Because every size grips on all six flats, the patent says bolts and nuts are less likely to be rounded off, and the nested inserts are lighter and pack smaller than a full set of sockets.

🪆

Nesting hex inserts

Each insert's outside hex is the next insert's inside hex - several sizes in one stack.

🔩

Six-flat grip

Every size drives the bolt on all six flats, which the patent says avoids rounding corners.

⚙️

Toothed drive sleeve

A sleeve with teeth all around holds the stack; a fork on the handle engages the teeth.

🎒

Light and compact

Thin nested inserts weigh less than a set of separate sockets and store inside each other.

The problem

Hex bolts and nuts come in many sizes, so a worker needs either a row of combination wrenches or a socket set with a ratchet. Open-end wrenches grip only two flats and can slip and round the corners of a tight nut. Sockets grip all six flats but each size is a separate heavy part. According to the patent, the aim is one wrench that loosens and tightens hex bolts and nuts of several sizes without slipping and rounding them.

The solution

  1. The handle (5) ends in a ring with flat faces on both sides.
  2. A toothed sleeve (1) sits in the ring, held by a lower press ring (8) and an upper press ring (4) screwed to the two faces. The sleeve’s inside is a regular hexagon; its outside carries rectangular teeth all the way round.
  3. Inside the sleeve sits a hex insert group (2): several thin hexagonal tubes nested one inside the next. The outside of the largest matches the sleeve’s hex; the outside of each smaller tube matches the inside of the tube around it. Each tube’s inner hex fits one bolt or nut size.
  4. A pawl (7), mounted on a pin (6), presses against the insert group to keep it in place.
  5. A shift fork (3) on the handle near the ring engages the sleeve’s teeth so the handle turns the sleeve and the inserts.
  6. Each insert has a round-hole cover on the side away from the pawl, and the handle’s far end is a stepped round grip with knurling.

Who it is for

  • Hand-tool brands looking for a distinctive multi-size wrench for retail tool walls and gift sets.
  • Bicycle, motorcycle and small-engine accessory sellers whose customers need a few metric sizes in one compact tool.
  • Facility maintenance and utility suppliers equipping crews who want fewer tools on the belt.
  • Promotional and roadside-kit companies building compact kits for cars, RVs and boats.

How it works

The main parts

Nesting Hex Insert Wrench - One Ring Head for Many Bolt and Nut Sizes - Patent drawing - section through the wrench head
Patent figure 2 - section through the head: press rings (4, 8), toothed sleeve (1), nested inserts (2) and pawl (7).
No.PartWhat it does
5HandleRing at one end, knurled grip at the other.
1Toothed sleeveHex inside, teeth outside; carries the insert stack.
2Hex insert groupNested hexagonal tubes, one per size.
4, 8Upper and lower press ringsHold the sleeve in the ring.
7PawlPresses on the inserts to retain them.
6PinPivot for the pawl.
3Shift forkEngages the sleeve teeth to transmit torque.

Using it

  1. Smallest size - with all inserts in place, the innermost hex fits the smallest bolt; place the head over it and turn.
  2. Step up a size - release the pawl and push out the innermost insert; the next insert’s hex is now the working size.
  3. Keep going - remove inserts one by one for larger sizes; the largest size is the sleeve’s own hex.
  4. Store - put the inserts back inside each other; the whole set lives in the wrench head.

Patent figure 5 - a single hexagonal insert.

Applications

Bicycle and motorcycle tool rolls

Riders need a handful of nut sizes; one head with nested inserts replaces several wrenches in a saddle bag.

Car, RV and boat emergency kits

A compact, light tool covers the common nut sizes for battery terminals, clamps and brackets.

Furniture and equipment assembly

Assembly crews meet a few bolt sizes over and over; changing an insert is faster than swapping wrenches.

Facility and utility maintenance

Technicians who climb ladders or work in tight spaces carry one tool instead of a ring of wrenches.

Gift and novelty tool sets

The nesting-doll idea is easy to show in packaging and works as a gift item for DIY customers.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very high torque - thin nested walls cannot match a heavy one-piece socket on seized truck or construction bolts.
  • Deeply recessed nuts - the ring head works on accessible bolts; long studs need deep sockets.
  • Professional fast work - a ratchet with a socket rail may be quicker when sizes change constantly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change sizes?

Release the pawl and push out the innermost insert; the next insert’s hex becomes the working size. To go back down, put the smaller insert back in.

How many sizes fit in one head?

The patent does not fix a number. Three to six sizes per head is realistic, chosen so wall thickness stays strong enough.

Is it as strong as a normal socket?

Each insert is thinner than a one-piece socket, so maximum torque is lower. We set the size range and steel to reach the proof torque you need and test it.

Does it grip all six flats?

Yes. Every size drives the nut through a full hexagon, which the patent says avoids the slipping and rounded corners of open-end wrenches.

Can it be metric and SAE?

Yes. Stacks can be metric, SAE or mixed; each insert is marked with its size.

Can it ratchet?

The patent drives the sleeve with a fork. A reversible ratcheting pawl can be developed in design for buyers who want it.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Multi-size wrenches may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
