Rotating Tower Business Card Holder with Tiered Runners

Standard flat card trays take up desk space and force users to flip through stacks to find one contact. This tower design solves that by stacking multiple rotating tiers vertically. A ladder-shaped fixed shaft stands on a base, and several runners sit on stepped surfaces along the shaft. Each runner spins freely around the center axis. Because the runners get smaller toward the top, every tier remains visible without blocking the one below it. Each runner carries multiple individual card holders around its edge, so dozens of contacts stay organized in a compact footprint.

The problem

On a busy desk or at a networking event, business cards pile up quickly. Flat trays and standard rolodexes spread horizontally, consuming valuable workspace. When cards are stacked in a single pile or placed in a basic box, finding a specific contact requires flipping through the entire collection. Users often lose track of important contacts because the storage method makes browsing inconvenient. Additionally, traditional linear racks hide the cards at the back behind those in the front, reducing visibility.

The solution

This design organizes business cards vertically using a tower structure built around a central ladder-shaped fixed shaft.

  1. A base (1) provides stability on a desk or counter. It includes a neck (11) and multiple fixing holes (12) to secure the shaft.
  2. A ladder fixing shaft (5) stands upright on the base. Its bottom has a fixed axle bed (51) that fits into the neck, secured by screws passing through screw holes (52).
  3. The shaft features multiple step surfaces along its length. A movable runner (201) rests on each step surface.
  4. Each runner has a central turn axle hole (21) that allows it to rotate smoothly around the ladder fixing shaft.
  5. The radius of each runner decreases successively from bottom to top. This stepped sizing ensures that upper tiers do not block the view of lower tiers.
  6. Multiple movable business card holders (601) are installed on each runner. These holders can slide along the circumference of the runner.
  7. Each card holder features a name film trap (61) at the top with an oblique opening direction, making the card face easy to read. An elastic neck (63) at the bottom connects the holder to the runner bottom surface (23).
  8. An axle cap (8) installs on the axial end (56) at the top of the shaft to finish the assembly.

Who it is for

  • Office supply brands looking to add a structured, multi-tier card organizer to their desk accessory lines. The vertical design differentiates their catalog from standard flat trays.
  • Corporate gift wholesalers sourcing functional desk items for client appreciation programs. The tower shape presents well as a professional desktop object.
  • Trade show equipment suppliers needing compact ways for exhibitors to display team contact cards at booths. The rotating tiers let visitors browse without taking up much table space.
  • Reception area outfitters organizing staff directories or vendor contacts in lobbies. Visitors can spin the tiers to find the right department quickly.

How it works

The main parts

Patent figure 2 - exploded view showing the base, shaft, runners, and card holders.
No.PartWhat it does
1BaseSupports the entire tower; contains the neck (11) and fixing holes (12).
5Ladder fixing shaftThe central upright column with multiple step surfaces.
51Fixed axle bedThe bottom section of the shaft that inserts into the base neck.
52Screw holesAlign with base fixing holes to bolt the shaft down.
56Axial endThe top tip of the shaft where the cap attaches.
8Axle capCovers the top of the shaft.
201Movable runnerA circular platform that sits on a step surface and rotates.
21Turn axle holeThe center hole of the runner that fits over the shaft.
23Runner bottom surfaceThe underside edge of the runner where card holders attach.
601Movable business card holderIndividual clips or pockets mounted around the runner.
61Name film trapThe slot where the card is inserted, angled obliquely.
63Elastic neckConnects the card holder to the runner bottom surface.

Operating steps

  1. Assembly - Insert the fixed axle bed (51) of the ladder fixing shaft (5) into the neck (11) of the base (1). Align the screw holes (52) with the fixing holes (12) and fasten them together. Place the movable runners (201) onto the step surfaces of the shaft, starting with the largest at the bottom. Press the axle cap (8) onto the axial end (56).
  2. Loading cards - Slide a business card into the name film trap (61) of a movable business card holder (601). The oblique opening angles the card face outward for reading. Repeat for all holders on every tier.
  3. Browsing - Spin any movable runner (201) by hand. It turns freely around the ladder fixing shaft (5) via the turn axle hole (21). Because the radii decrease from bottom to top, spinning an upper tier does not obscure the cards on the tiers below it.
  4. Adjusting positions - The elastic neck (63) allows the movable business card holders (601) to slide along the circumference of the runner bottom surface (23), letting users space the cards out evenly or group them by category.

Applications

Corporate reception desks

Front-desk staff manage dozens of vendor and partner contacts daily. A flat tray hides half the cards under others, slowing down lookups. The tower holder lets receptionists spin to the exact tier they need while keeping the desk surface clear for paperwork.

Trade show booths

Exhibitors display sales team cards for attendees to take or reference. Table space at trade shows is limited and shared with product samples. This vertical organizer holds many cards in a small footprint, and attendees can browse the team roster by spinning the tiers themselves.

Home offices and freelancers

Independent professionals collect networking cards at local meetups and events. Storing them in a drawer means they are forgotten until cleaned out. Placing the tower on a desk keeps contacts visible and accessible during follow-up work.

Retail point-of-sale counters

Store managers keep supplier representative cards near the register for quick reordering calls. Counters are crowded with scanners, bags, and displays. The stepped tower uses vertical air space instead of horizontal counter space.

Club and association meetings

Board members of local clubs exchange contact details frequently during monthly gatherings. Passing around a loose stack leads to dropped or misplaced cards. Setting the tower in the center of the meeting table allows everyone to spin it and find who they need.

Where it is less suitable

  • High-volume retail card dispensers - this design is for browsing personal collections, not for dispensing hundreds of identical promotional cards to customers.
  • Pocket-sized travel organizers - the tower structure is meant to stand stationary on a desk; it does not fold flat for carrying in a briefcase.
  • Digital-first workflows - teams that scan every card immediately into a CRM app may not need a physical desktop display.

Frequently asked questions

How do the tiers rotate without hitting each other?

The ladder fixing shaft has multiple step surfaces, and a runner sits on each one. According to the patent, the radius of each runner decreases successively from bottom to top. This means the lowest tier is the widest, and each tier above it is smaller, so spinning an upper runner does not cause it to strike the cards on the lower runners.

How are the individual card holders attached?

Each movable business card holder has an elastic neck at its bottom. This elastic neck connects to the runner bottom surface. The patent describes that the card holders can slide along the circumference of the runner, allowing users to space them out or group them manually.

Will standard US business cards fit?

The patent specifies a name film trap at the top of each card holder with an oblique opening direction. The exact dimensions of this trap get fixed during sampling so the slot holds standard US business cards (about 3.5 x 2 inches) or international sizes.

Is the tower stable enough not to tip over?

Stability relies on the base. The patent describes a base with a neck into which the fixed axle bed of the shaft is installed, secured by screws through fixing holes and screw holes. The overall weight of the base and the material used are chosen during sampling, with a tip test on a fully loaded tower.

Can the number of tiers be changed?

Yes. The patent covers the concept of multiple step surfaces on the ladder fixing shaft. The exact number of tiers and the corresponding number of runners are set in design based on the buyer’s target card capacity.

Does it come apart for shipping?

The design is inherently modular. The shaft bolts to the base, the runners drop onto the step surfaces, and the axle cap installs on the axial end at the top. This allows the unit to ship flat or partially disassembled and be put together quickly.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and is withdrawn, meaning the owner actively abandoned the patent right effective 2026-01-02. It therefore does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Desk organizers may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
