Patent CN105965549B
Updated November 4, 2026Folding Knife with Tool-Free Detachable Belt Clip and Spring-Loaded Pivot
Standard folding knives often require specialized drivers to swap clips or blades, making deep cleaning difficult and customization slow. This patent describes a mechanism where the belt clip locks via a simple snap-in action using internal springs, requiring no tools for removal. Additionally, the pivot axis itself functions as a fastener system, enabling quick blade replacement. This approach reduces assembly time in manufacturing and enhances user convenience for field maintenance.

The problem
Many folding knives feature fixed belt clips attached by multiple screws. Changing the carry direction (left vs. right) or removing the clip for deep cleaning requires a precision driver. If the screws strip or if the user lacks the correct tool, the knife becomes difficult to maintain. Furthermore, replacing a worn-out blade usually involves disassembling the pivot mechanism, which can be complex if the pivot pin is press-fit or riveted. Users need a design that allows both the clip and the blade to be serviced or swapped easily, reducing downtime and frustration.
The solution
- Handle Assembly: The knife consists of a first side plate and a second side plate forming a cavity. A “sacrum” component with a threaded sleeve connects the two plates at the rear.
- Blade Mounting: The blade includes an installation portion and a cutting edge. It is mounted on a main shaft consisting of a female screw and a male screw. This shaft passes through holes in the side plates and the blade, securing them together.
- Clip Attachment: The belt clip has an L-shaped bending portion at its mounting end. The first side plate features an inner plate and an outer plate. An elastic bar is connected to the inner plate, and a baffle is positioned opposite it on the outer plate.
- Snap Mechanism: A gap forms between the baffle and the elastic bar. The outer plate has an inlet/outlet opening aligned with this gap. The clip’s L-shaped end is inserted through this opening and snapped into the gap, where the elastic bar holds it in place.
- Locking Structure: When the blade is unfolded, a holding structure (elastic arm and stop bar) keeps it open. When folded, the blade sits within the handle cavity.

Who it is for
- EDC Gear Brands: Companies looking to differentiate their pocket knives with easier maintenance features compared to competitors using traditional screw-on clips.
- Outdoor Equipment Manufacturers: Brands targeting hikers and campers who may need to clean grit from their knives or swap accessories in the field without carrying extra tools.
- Wholesale Distributors: Sellers who value reduced return rates due to stripped screws or lost small hardware parts.
- Custom Knife Makers: Small-batch producers who want a modular platform that allows for quick prototyping of different handle colors or clip orientations.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blade | Includes installation portion (11) and cutting edge (12). |
| 2, 3 | Side Plates | First (2) and second (3) plates form the handle body. |
| 4 | Sacrum | Rear connector with threaded sleeve (53) joining the plates. |
| 51, 52 | Screws | Fasten the side plates to the sacrum. |
| 61 | Belt Clip | Attaches to the handle; has an L-shaped bending end (62). |
| 24 | Inner Plate | Part of the first side plate; holds the elastic bar. |
| 25 | Outer Plate | Part of the first side plate; contains the baffle and opening. |
| 26 | Baffle | Fixed wall inside the outer plate area. |
| 27 | Elastic Bar | Spring-like component connecting to the inner plate. |
| 28 | Inlet/Outlet | Opening in the outer plate for the clip to enter/exit. |
| 81, 82 | Main Shaft Screws | Female (81) and male (82) screws acting as the pivot axis. |

Operating Steps
- Installing the Clip: Align the L-shaped bending portion (62) of the belt clip (61) with the inlet/outlet (28) on the outer plate (25). Push the clip inward. The bending portion deflects the elastic bar (27) and slides into the gap between the baffle (26) and the elastic bar. Once past the baffle, the elastic bar returns to its original position, clamping the clip securely.
- Removing the Clip: Pull the belt clip outward firmly. The L-shaped end flexes the elastic bar (27), allowing it to slide back through the gap and exit via the inlet/outlet (28). No tools are required.
- Blade Replacement: Unscrew the main shaft female screw (81) and male screw (82). Remove the old blade (1). Insert the new blade’s installation portion (11) between the side plates. Re-insert the screws and tighten. The thread engagement ensures stability.
- Using the Knife: Rotate the blade to the unfolded position. The holding structure engages to keep the blade open. To close, release the lock and fold the blade into the cavity formed by the side plates.

Applications
Everyday Carry (EDC) Pocket Knives
Users often switch between left-handed and right-handed carry positions. This design allows them to move the clip instantly without hunting for a Torx driver, encouraging more frequent use and cleaner maintenance.
Field Repair and Cleaning
Hikers and workers dealing with mud or food residue need to wash their knives thoroughly. Removing the clip and blade exposes all surfaces for scrubbing, preventing corrosion and hygiene issues common in fixed-clip designs.
Retail Display and Demo Units
Store owners can easily swap damaged blades or change display configurations (e.g., adding a lanyard hole cover or changing clip color) without disassembling the entire handle with specialized tools.
Modular Accessory Systems
Brands can sell different colored or shaped belt clips as separate SKUs. Since the attachment is standardized via the L-shape and spring gap, users can mix and match aesthetics without technical barriers.
Where it is less suitable
- High-Stress Tactical Use: While the clip is secure, extremely rough handling might cause accidental release if the elastic bar fatigues over years of heavy abuse. Traditional screwed clips offer absolute mechanical certainty.
- Ultra-Thin Profiles: The double-layered side plate structure (inner/outer) adds thickness compared to single-piece stamped handles, which may not suit ultra-minimalist slim EDC preferences.
Frequently asked questions
How does the belt clip attach without tools?
The clip has an L-shaped end that you push into a slot on the handle. Inside, a spring-loaded metal bar bends to let the clip in, then snaps back to hold it tightly between a wall and the spring. You pull it out just as easily by hand.
Can I replace the blade myself?
Yes. The pivot axis is made of two screws. By unscrewing them, you can take the handle apart and swap the blade. This makes cleaning and maintenance much simpler than press-fit or riveted pivots.
Is the clip secure enough for daily carry?
The patent describes a spring-clamp mechanism designed to hold the clip in place. In prototypes, the retention force depends on the stiffness of the elastic bar. We recommend testing the final sample to ensure it meets your drop-test and vibration requirements.
What materials are used for the handle?
The patent shows a structure with inner and outer side plates. These are typically made from stamped steel or aluminum. The elastic bar can be steel or a high-performance polymer, depending on the desired flexibility and fatigue resistance.
Does this design work for left-handed users?
Yes. Because the clip attaches via a symmetrical slot and spring mechanism, you can move the clip from one side of the handle to the other without tools, accommodating both left and right-hand carry.
Are there any US regulations I need to worry about?
You must comply with federal and state laws regarding knife sales and shipping. Some states have restrictions on blade length or automatic opening mechanisms. Ensure your marketing materials do not violate local carry laws.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and is in force there. It does not restrict production or sales in the US. However, you should conduct a freedom-to-operate search to ensure no US patents cover similar tool-less clip or screw-pivot technologies.
