Patent CN105996227B
Updated October 30, 2026Convertible Face Mask with Adjustable Strap Length
Standard face masks force buyers to stock separate ear-loop, headband and neckband versions. This design uses one mask body and one elastic strap. The body has two sets of flaps—first flaps on the sides and second flaps on the lower sides—each folded outward and stitched down to form channels. The strap threads through the channels and ends in mushroom-shaped buckles that snap together. A sliding piece and a tied limit knot in the middle let the user set the strap length. Thread the strap through the upper channels and join the buckles overhead for a headband; route it through the lower channels and behind the neck for a neckband; or loop it around each ear for an earband style. One SKU covers three wearing preferences.

The problem
Buyers who supply face masks to workers or consumers often need to stock separate ear-loop, headband and neckband models because people have different comfort preferences and workplace rules. Managing three SKUs for the same filtration panel raises inventory costs and complicates ordering. In addition, fixed-length straps leave some users with a loose fit while others find them too tight, since the distance between ears or around the head varies widely. A single mask that adapts to multiple wearing styles and lengths removes the need for parallel inventories and lets each wearer dial in the tension.
The solution
The mask solves this with one body and one continuous elastic strap.
- The mask body (1) carries two first flaps (11) on its left and right sides and two second flaps (12) on its lower left and lower right sides. Each flap folds from the inside to the outside, and its end is fixedly connected to the body, leaving a channel underneath.
- The strap (2) consists of a lace elastic belt body (21). At each end sits a connecting device (22), specifically a mushroom buckle connecting device (220) that has a mushroom-shaped protrusion (221) on one end and a button hole (222) on the other.
- In the middle of the elastic belt body is a length adjustment mechanism: a sliding adjustment piece (23) sleeved on the belt and a limit knot (24) tied from the belt material itself at the lower end of the adjustment piece.
- To wear as a headband, the two mushroom buckle devices pass upward through the two first channels, and the protrusion of one snaps into the button hole of the other above the head.
- To wear as a neckband, the strap routes through the second channels below the mask and connects behind the neck.
- To wear as an earband, the strap loops around each ear using the side channels and buckles back on itself.

Who it is for
- PPE wholesalers and distributors who want to reduce the number of mask SKUs they warehouse while still offering customers a choice of wearing styles.
- Janitorial and facility management suppliers outfitting cleaning crews where some workers prefer headbands to avoid interfering with safety glasses, while others favor ear-loops for speed.
- Retail brands selling to consumers who need a single product listing online that satisfies shoppers looking for either over-the-head or behind-the-ear masks.
- Promotional product companies printing custom logos on masks for events, where attendees have varied fit preferences but the organizer orders one item.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mask body | Main panel covering the nose and mouth area. |
| 11 | First flaps | Two flaps on the left and right sides forming upper channels. |
| 12 | Second flaps | Two flaps on the lower left and lower right sides forming lower channels. |
| 2 | Strap | Continuous elastic assembly routing through the channels. |
| 21 | Lace elastic belt body | The stretchable band running through the flaps. |
| 22 / 220 | Connecting device / mushroom buckle | End fittings with a protrusion and a button hole for snapping together. |
| 221 | Mushroom-shaped protrusion | The male part of the buckle. |
| 222 | Button hole | The female part receiving the protrusion. |
| 23 | Adjustment piece | Sliding sleeve in the middle of the belt for length changes. |
| 24 | Limit knot | Knot tied from the belt below the adjustment piece to stop it sliding off. |
Operating steps
- Thread the strap through the desired pair of channels on the mask body. For a headband, use the first flaps (11); for a neckband, use the second flaps (12).
- Pull the elastic belt body (21) until the mask sits against the face.
- Slide the adjustment piece (23) along the belt to shorten or lengthen the loop. The limit knot (24) prevents the slider from passing the center point.
- Connect the ends by pressing the mushroom-shaped protrusion (221) of one buckle into the button hole (222) of the other.
- To change styles, disconnect the buckles, pull the strap out of the current channels, re-thread through the alternate flaps, and reconnect.

Applications
Warehouse and logistics shifts
Workers in distribution centers wear masks for entire shifts and switch tasks frequently. Some prefer a headband style so the strap does not interfere with headset bands, while others choose ear-loops for quick removal during breaks. A single convertible mask lets supervisors issue one item per worker instead of sorting requests by style.
Retail store employees
Staff interacting with customers need a neat appearance and may wear glasses. Routing the strap through the lower second flaps creates a neckband that keeps pressure off the ears and avoids pushing eyeglass arms outward. When the shift ends, the employee can unclip the mushroom buckle in seconds.
Event and trade-show giveaways
Organizers ordering branded masks for attendees face unknown fit preferences across hundreds of recipients. Supplying a convertible mask means every attendee can adjust the length via the sliding piece and pick the wearing mode that suits their face shape, reducing complaints and waste.
Food processing facilities
Personnel moving between production zones often follow hygiene protocols that specify over-the-head straps to prevent loose loops from contacting surfaces. The first-flap headband configuration meets that requirement, while the same mask can be reconfigured for office staff in the same facility who prefer ear-loops.
Where it is less suitable
- Surgical and sterile clinical environments where tie-on gauze masks or specific medical-grade fastening standards are mandated by hospital protocol.
- Respirator-class applications requiring a certified negative-pressure seal test, since the patent describes the mechanical strap arrangement rather than filtration performance levels.
- High-speed automated dispensing where machines expect a fixed geometry of pre-formed ear-loops for robotic placement.
Frequently asked questions
How does the mask switch between wearing styles?
The mask body has two sets of flaps. The first flaps on the left and right sides form upper channels, and the second flaps on the lower sides form lower channels. By threading the elastic strap through different channels and snapping the mushroom buckles together at the appropriate point, the same mask becomes a headband, neckband or ear-loop style.
What keeps the strap from slipping once adjusted?
A sliding adjustment piece sits in the middle of the elastic belt body. Below it, a limit knot tied directly from the belt material stops the slider from moving past the center, holding the chosen length in place during wear.
Are the buckles sewn on or removable?
According to the patent, a mushroom buckle connecting device is provided at each end of the lace elastic belt body. The buckle has a mushroom-shaped protrusion on one end and a button hole on the other, allowing the two ends to snap together. The patent does not specify whether the buckles are permanently attached or removable in production.
What materials are used for the mask body?
The patent describes the structural arrangement of the flaps and channels but does not list specific fabrics. The body material, filter layers and non-woven composition are set in design and confirmed on prototypes based on the target standard.
Can the strap length fit both children and adults?
The sliding adjustment piece and the elastic nature of the belt body allow the loop to be shortened or lengthened. The exact minimum and maximum circumference are set in design and confirmed on prototypes for each target age group.
Does the patent describe filtration performance?
No. The patent covers the mechanical wearing mode conversion and the strap length adjustment mechanism. Filtration efficiency, breathability and fluid resistance depend on the filter media selected during product development.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and is lapsed (terminated for non-payment of annual fees, recorded 2023-06-02), so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Face mask strap and attachment systems may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
