Business Card Holder with Rack and Pinion Engagement Structure

Standard business card boxes require users to dig into the container or lift the entire unit to see the cards. This design solves that by integrating a mechanical linkage between the lid and the body. Two curved toothed strips (arc-shaped racks) are anchored to the base. Gears attached to the box mesh with these racks. Lifting the lid drives the gears along the curve, tilting the box open. Letting go lets gravity pull the box flat, spinning the gears in reverse to snap the lid shut. It combines simple mechanics with automatic closing.

The problem

Traditional business card holders often keep cards hidden inside a deep or narrow box. To retrieve a card, a user must either reach inside blindly, risking dropping others, or pick up the entire holder to inspect the contents. This disrupts workflow during meetings or networking events. Additionally, lids can be left open accidentally, exposing cards to dust or causing them to fall out if the holder is bumped. There is a need for a compact desktop organizer that presents cards clearly upon interaction and secures them automatically when not in use.

The solution

The patent describes a card holder where the lid and the inner box are mechanically linked through a gear system.

  1. A bottom plate serves as the foundation. Two parallel arc-shaped racks are permanently connected to this plate.
  2. A box body holds the cards. It is hinged at its front lower end to a connection cross bar on the bottom plate, allowing it to pivot.
  3. Two gears are rotatably connected to the top rear side of the box body. These gears mesh with the arc-shaped racks on the base.
  4. A box cover (lid) is hinged to the top rear side of the box body.
  5. Crucially, the left and right ends of the box cover have rectangular protrusions. These protrusions fit into corresponding rectangular openings on the gears. This connection ensures that when the lid moves, it forces the gears to rotate.

When the user lifts the box cover, the rectangular protrusions turn the gears. Because the gears are meshed with the stationary curved racks, they cannot move linearly; instead, they roll along the curve. This rolling action pulls the rear of the box body downward relative to the front hinge, causing the entire box to tilt forward and upward. This exposes the cards. When the user releases the lid, the weight of the box body tends to return it to the horizontal position. As the box falls back, the gears rotate in the opposite direction along the racks, driving the lid back down to close over the box.

Who it is for

  • Corporate Office Suppliers: Brands looking to offer functional desk accessories that differentiate from basic plastic boxes.
  • Executive Gift Manufacturers: Companies producing high-end stationery sets where mechanical novelty adds perceived value.
  • Hotel and Concierge Services: Venues needing durable, self-closing containers for guest information cards.
  • Retail Display Designers: Stores wanting interactive display units for loyalty cards or product specs that draw customer attention.

How it works

The main parts

22Box Cover (Lid)Opens and closes the box; linked to gears.
221Rectangular ProtrusionsConnectors on the lid that engage the gears.
23GearsRotate along the racks to tilt the box.

Operating Steps

  1. Open: Lift the box cover. The protrusions turn the gears. The gears roll along the arc-shaped racks, tilting the box body forward.
  2. Access: Cards are now angled toward the user for easy removal.
  3. Close: Release the cover. Gravity returns the box body to the horizontal position. This rotation drives the gears backward, pulling the cover down to close the box.

Applications

Executive Desk Organization

In professional settings, quick access to contact details is essential. This holder keeps cards visible without cluttering the desk surface. The automatic closing feature maintains a tidy appearance after each use.

Hotel Front Desk Displays

Concierge desks often display room service menus or local attraction cards. This unit allows guests to flip through options easily. The self-closing lid protects the cards from damage when not being viewed.

Retail Product Information Stands

Small retail items like electronics or cosmetics often have spec sheets nearby. Placing these in a tilted, auto-closing holder draws attention while keeping the information clean and organized.

Trade Show Booths

Booth operators need to hand out business cards efficiently. This holder presents cards in an accessible way. When not actively distributing, the closed lid prevents loss or theft of remaining stock.

Where it is less suitable

  • Large Volume Storage: The mechanism relies on the specific weight distribution of a standard card box. Overloading with thick brochures may hinder the gravity-assisted closing.
  • High-Vibration Environments: In moving vehicles or unstable surfaces, the loose components might rattle or fail to close properly due to external forces overriding gravity.
  • Minimalist Flat Designs: The arc-shaped racks and protruding gears add height and complexity, making it unsuitable for ultra-slim or flush-mounted drawer organizers.

Frequently asked questions

How does the automatic closing work?

The design uses gravity and a gear linkage. When you release the lid, the weight of the box body causes it to return to a flat position. As it flattens, the gears attached to the box roll backward along the fixed curved racks. This rotation pulls the lid down, closing the box automatically.

Do I need batteries or power?

No. The mechanism is purely mechanical. It relies on the interaction between the gears, the arc-shaped racks, and the weight of the components. No electricity or magnets are required.

Can it hold thick stacks of cards?

The patent describes a standard box body size. The capacity depends on the internal dimensions chosen during manufacturing. If the stack becomes too heavy, it may affect the speed of the auto-close, but the mechanism should still function if balanced correctly.

Is the mechanism prone to jamming?

The patent includes a “distance rod” connecting the two racks to prevent them from swinging or deforming. Proper manufacturing tolerances are key. If the gears and racks are molded accurately, the motion is smooth. Dust or debris can interfere, so keeping the unit clean is advised.

What materials are best for this design?

Plastics like ABS or Polypropylene are common for lightweight versions. Metal (aluminum or steel) provides better weight control for the gravity-assist feature and higher durability. The choice affects the feel and the closing speed.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

Yes. The patent CN106113990B is filed only in China and is active there. It has no US counterpart. Therefore, manufacturing and selling this design in the US is not restricted by this specific patent. However, we recommend a freedom-to-operate check to ensure no other US patents cover similar mechanical office accessories.
