Keychain Box Cutter with Twist-to-Release Safety Head

Keychain box cutters are handy and a little risky: a button that slides in a pocket can push the blade out. This parcel opener adds a second step. The blade sits in a tube with a push button in a side slot. Pushing the button brings the blade up against a rotating head whose slot is turned at an angle, so the blade cannot come out. Twist the head and the slot lines up with the blade, which can then be pushed through to cut tape. Release the button and springs retract the blade and turn the head back to its locked angle.

The problem

Online shopping means a box to open almost every day, and people reach for keys, scissors or kitchen knives. Small keychain cutters fix that, but the patent points out their risk: a slider bumped in a pocket or on a belt can push the blade out and cut someone. A cutter that lives on a keyring needs a lock that a pocket cannot undo.

The solution

The patent hides the blade behind a rotating head:

  1. A tube (2) holds a blade carrier (6) with a blade (63) at its front and a push button (64) that sticks out of a long slot (21).
  2. A tail cap (3) with a hanging hole (31) closes the back; a fixed head (4) screws onto the front.
  3. A rotating head (5) sits in the fixed head and has a rectangular blade slot (54). At rest the slot is turned at a blocking angle (K) to the blade.
  4. Pushing the button only brings the blade up against the head. Twisting the head compresses a small spring (45) and lines the slot up with the blade, which can then slide out.
  5. Releasing the button lets the safety spring (7) pull the blade back, and the small spring turns the head back to its blocking angle.

Who it is for

  • EDC (everyday-carry) and keychain-tool brands wanting a cutter with a clear safety story.
  • Promotional products suppliers - a branded cutter for e-commerce, logistics and moving companies.
  • Warehouse and retail supply distributors - a safer pocket cutter for staff opening cartons.
  • Office and home goods sellers for the daily delivery box.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
2, 21Tube and slotBody of the cutter; the button travels in the slot.
3, 31Tail cap and holeCloses the back; takes a keyring.
4Fixed headScrewed to the front; has the cavity for the rotating head and a stop groove (44).
5, 54Rotating head and blade slotTurns the slot between blocking and open angles.
45, 55Head spring and stop pinReturn the head to the blocking angle.
6, 63Blade carrier and bladeSlides in the tube; blade at the front.
64Push buttonMoves the blade forward.
7Safety springPulls the blade back when the button is released.

Cutting

  1. Push the button forward - the blade meets the head and stops (it cannot leave the slot at the blocking angle).
  2. Twist the head until the slot lines up with the blade.
  3. Push the button further - the blade comes out; cut the tape.
  4. Let go - the blade retracts and the head turns back to its locked position.

Stronger versions

A second version in the patent uses several stop grooves and springs around the head for a steadier, quicker turn and a firmer hold.

Applications

Daily parcel opening

Tape, straps and plastic bags on delivery boxes.

Warehouses and stockrooms

A pocket cutter for staff, with a lock that pockets and belts cannot undo.

Promotional giveaways

Logistics, moving and e-commerce companies’ branded keyrings.

Travel and camping

Opening packaging and cutting cord on the go (follow airline rules on blades).

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy cutting - thick cardboard and carpet need a full-size utility knife.
  • Flights and restricted venues - knives and blades are restricted in carry-on luggage.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t the blade slide out in a pocket?

According to the patent, the blade slot in the front head is turned at an angle to the blade at rest. Pushing the button only brings the blade up against the head; the head must be twisted before the blade can pass.

Does the blade go back by itself?

Yes. When the button is released, a safety spring pulls the blade back and a second spring turns the head back to the locked angle.

Can the blade be replaced?

The patent shows a fixed blade on the carrier. We can design it for replaceable blades or a ceramic blade.

How big is it?

The patent shows a slim, pen-like tube with a keyring hole. Final length and diameter are set in design.

Is it allowed in the US?

Short utility cutters are widely sold, but some states and cities restrict knives, and blades are not allowed in airline carry-on bags. We recommend describing it as a packaging cutter and stating blade length.

Yes - laser engraving or printing on the tube, and custom packaging for giveaways.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Safety cutters are covered by many US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
