Pen with a Light-Emitting Cap and Rotating Clip Stand

Writing in dim environments often requires a separate flashlight or poor posture under weak room lights. This design integrates a small light source directly into the pen cap. The cap contains a circuit board with an LED and a battery compartment sealed by a threaded end cap. A spring-loaded switch activates the light when the end cap is turned. The unique feature is the rotating clip: normally used to secure the pen to a pocket, it can be rotated 90 degrees to prop the pen up vertically. When the light is on, the capped pen stands on its own as a focused mini-lamp, illuminating the page without needing hands to hold a torch.

The problem

Standard pens offer no light source, making it difficult to write in low-light conditions such as during power outages, in dimly lit study areas, or while working outdoors at dusk. Users typically have to hold a separate flashlight or rely on inadequate ambient light, which causes eye strain and awkward posture. Additionally, once a pen is capped, it simply lies flat on a surface, offering no utility beyond storage. There is a need for a writing instrument that provides its own targeted illumination and can double as a stationary light source when not being held.

The solution

  1. The pen body (1) is made of ABS plastic and features two flat cut surfaces (10). One surface includes an ink viewing window (12) near the nib (11) to show remaining ink.
  2. The pen cap (2) fits over the nib. Inside the cap’s top end is a top mouth shell (21) containing a circuit board (24) with an LED light (29) and a lamp cap (20).
  3. A transparent lampshade (4) sits between the top mouth shell and the main cap body, diffusing the light emitted from the LED.
  4. The battery (13) is housed in a groove (22) within the top mouth shell. An end cap (26) screws onto this groove.
  5. A spring (27) connects the end cap to the switch (28). Turning the end cap clockwise compresses the spring, pressing the battery against the contacts to light the LED.
  6. The pen clip (3) is attached to a clip connecting seat (5) via a shaft (7) inside a U-shaped groove (6). The clip can rotate 90 degrees relative to the cap.
  7. When rotated, the raised part (9) of the clip acts as a leg, supporting the pen cap so the whole unit stands upright like a small lamp.

Who it is for

  • Stationery brands looking to differentiate basic ballpoint pens with functional novelty features for students and office workers.
  • Promotional product suppliers who need compact, useful items for trade shows or corporate gifts that combine branding space (on the cap/body) with practical utility.
  • Outdoor gear retailers selling lightweight tools for camping or emergency kits where writing in the dark might be necessary.
  • Educational supply manufacturers targeting students who study in shared dormitories or poorly lit rooms.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Pen BodyHolds the ink cartridge; has flat sides and ink window.
2Pen CapCovers the nib; houses the lighting electronics.
3Pen ClipStandard pocket clip that rotates 90° to become a stand.
4Transparent ShadeDiffuses light from the LED inside the cap.
5, 7Clip Seat & ShaftAllows the clip to pivot independently of the cap.
12Ink WindowShows ink level through the side of the body.
21Top Mouth ShellInternal housing for the circuit board and battery.
24, 29Circuit Board & LEDGenerates light when powered.
26, 27, 28End Cap, Spring, SwitchMechanical switch activated by twisting the bottom of the cap.

Operating steps

  1. To Write: Use the pen normally. The clip functions as a standard pocket holder.
  2. To Illuminate: Twist the end cap (26) clockwise. The spring (27) pushes the battery (13) into contact with the switch (28), completing the circuit and turning on the LED (29). Light shines through the transparent shade (4).
  3. To Stand as a Lamp: Rotate the pen clip (3) 90 degrees around the shaft (7). The raised part (9) touches the surface, lifting the pen body slightly or stabilizing the cap so the light projects downward or forward depending on orientation.
  4. To Turn Off: Twist the end cap counterclockwise to release the spring pressure, breaking the circuit.

Applications

Student Study Sessions

Students studying late in dorms or libraries with dim lighting can use the pen’s built-in light to see their notes clearly without disturbing others with large lamps. The rotating clip allows the pen to stand on the desk, freeing up hand space for reading or typing.

Emergency Kits

Included in household or car emergency kits, this pen serves as both a writing tool and a small backup light source during power outages. The simple mechanical switch (twist to activate) ensures reliability even if electronic components are rarely used.

Outdoor Camping

Campers can use the pen to fill out logs or maps at night. The integrated light eliminates the need to fumble for a headlamp or phone flashlight just to write. The rugged ABS body and protected LED make it suitable for rough handling.

Promotional Gifts

Brands can print logos on the wide surface area of the pen cap and body. As a gift item, it offers higher perceived value than a standard pen because of the added functionality, encouraging recipients to keep and use it longer.

Where it is less suitable

  • High-volume industrial marking: The pen tip is likely a standard ballpoint; it is not designed for permanent markers or grease pencils used in manufacturing.
  • Professional drafting: The integrated electronics may add weight or balance issues unsuitable for precise technical drawing instruments.
  • Extreme temperatures: Standard alkaline batteries and ABS plastic may degrade in very hot or cold environments compared to specialized tactical gear.

Frequently asked questions

How does the light turn on?

The user twists the end cap at the bottom of the pen. Clockwise rotation compresses an internal spring, pushing the battery against the switch to light the LED. Counter-clockwise rotation releases the spring and turns the light off.

Can the pen really stand up?

Yes. The pen clip rotates 90 degrees on a central shaft. In this position, the bent tip of the clip acts as a leg, supporting the pen cap so the entire unit stands upright on a desk, directing the light downward.

What battery does it use?

The patent describes a battery housed in a groove within the top shell. The specific size (e.g., CR2032 coin cell or AAA) is set in design based on available internal volume. Coin cells are typical for slim pen caps.

Is the light bright enough to read?

The patent specifies an LED light behind a transparent shade. Brightness depends on the LED chosen during production. It is designed for close-range task lighting, such as writing on paper, rather than illuminating a whole room.

Does the ink window work?

Yes. The pen body has a flat side with a clear window near the nib. This allows you to see the ink level inside the refill without removing the cap.

Can I replace the refill?

The design uses a standard pen body structure. Refill replacement is expected to follow common ballpoint mechanics, though the cap must be removed first. Specific refill compatibility is confirmed in design.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, similar novelty pen designs may be covered by other active US patents. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
