Updated November 3, 2026Pen Cap with Adjustable Phone Stand Mechanism
Standard pens offer no convenience when you want to watch a video or check messages at your desk. This design integrates a functional phone stand directly into the pen cap. By unscrewing nuts and rotating support plates, the cap transforms into a three-point contact system: two hinged flaps hold the phone's base, and an adjustable telescopic rod supports the top. This setup provides a stable viewing angle without requiring a separate accessory, making it ideal for office supplies, promotional items, and student kits.

The problem
Office workers and students often need to view their smartphones for notifications, videos, or reference materials while working at a desk. However, standard pen caps are purely decorative or protective. Users typically have to prop their phones against books, cup them in their hands, or carry bulky, separate phone stands that clutter the workspace. There is a lack of compact, integrated solutions that transform everyday writing instruments into functional viewing aids without adding significant bulk or cost.
The solution
- The core component is a pen cap sleeve (1) equipped with a telescopic rod (2) in the middle of one side.
- On the opposite side, two cylindrical shafts (first shaft 3 and second shaft 4) are positioned parallel to the rod’s central axis.
- Support plates (first plate 9 and second plate 16) attach to these shafts. They feature through-holes and are secured by nuts (first nut 6 and second nut 8), allowing them to rotate around the shafts.
- The lower part of each support plate includes a concave platform (11) with a limiting plate (12).
- A hinged flap (13) connects to the concave platform. When flipped perpendicular to the platform, it rests against the limiting plate.
- To use the stand, the user unscrews the nuts, rotates the support plates outward so they are perpendicular to the cap sleeve, tightens the nuts to lock them, and flips the flaps up. The phone rests on the two flaps and leans against the extended telescopic rod.

Who it is for
- Promotional Product Suppliers: Companies looking for unique corporate gifts that combine utility with brand visibility.
- Stationery Brands: Manufacturers seeking value-added features for premium pen sets targeting office professionals.
- Educational Kit Providers: Suppliers creating student bundles where multi-functional tools save space in pencil cases.
- Corporate Gifting Agencies: Firms wanting practical desk accessories for employee welcome kits or client appreciation.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pen Cap Sleeve | Main body housing the mechanism. |
| 2 | Telescopic Rod | Extends to support the top of the phone; adjusts angle. |
| 3, 4 | Cylindrical Shafts | Coaxial pivot points for the support plates. |
| 6, 8 | Nuts | Lock the support plates in the desired rotational position. |
| 9, 16 | Support Plates | Rotate out to form the base structure of the stand. |
| 11 | Concave Platform | Resting area for the phone’s bottom edge. |
| 12 | Limiting Plate | Stops the flap from over-rotating. |
| 13 | Flap | Hinged lip that holds the phone in place. |
| 14 | Fixing Device | Magnet or Velcro to keep the flap closed when not in use. |
| 15 | Backing Plate | Flush surface for structural integrity. |

Setting up the stand
- Unlock the plates: Unscrew the first nut (6) and second nut (8).
- Rotate: Turn the first support plate (9) and second support plate (16) around their respective shafts until they are perpendicular to the cap sleeve.
- Lock: Tighten the nuts to fix the plates in this open position.
- Deploy flaps: Flip the hinged flaps (13) upward until they touch the limiting plates (12).
- Place phone: Rest the bottom of the phone on the two flaps/concave platforms.
- Adjust angle: Extend the telescopic rod (2) so its upper end touches the back of the phone. The three contact points stabilize the device.

Applications
Desk Work and Meetings
During long meetings or desk work, users can quickly deploy the stand to view emails or documents on their phone without holding it, keeping their hands free for note-taking.
Student Study Sessions
Students can use the pen cap stand to watch educational videos or follow digital textbooks while writing notes, reducing eye strain and improving multitasking efficiency.
Travel and Commuting
For travelers who rely on phones for navigation or entertainment, this integrated stand offers a compact solution that fits in a pocket alongside a pen, avoiding the bulk of dedicated holders.
Promotional Events
At trade shows or corporate events, branded versions of this pen serve as functional giveaways that attendees will actually use daily, increasing brand exposure compared to standard disposable pens.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy Tablets: The mechanism is sized for smartphones; larger devices may exceed the structural limits of the plastic or metal components.
- Rough Handling: If the nuts are not tightened properly, the plates may slip during transport, potentially damaging the phone or the pen.
- Minimalist Preferences: Users who prefer ultra-slim, simple pens may find the added thickness of the mechanical parts unnecessary.
Frequently asked questions
How does the phone stand work?
You unscrew two nuts on the side of the pen cap to unlock two support plates. Rotate these plates outward so they stick out perpendicularly. Then, flip up small hinged flaps on the plates. Place your phone’s bottom edge on these flaps and lean the top against the extendable telescopic rod. The rod adjusts the viewing angle.
Is the mechanism durable?
The durability depends on the material chosen (plastic vs. metal) and the strength of the telescopic rod. For mass production, high-grade ABS or aluminum is recommended to withstand repeated rotation and extension. Specific load tests should be conducted on prototypes.
Can I customize the look?
Yes. We can adjust the size to fit standard pens, change the material (plastic, metal, wood), apply different finishes (matte, glossy, plated), and add branding via laser engraving or printing. The locking mechanism (magnet vs. Velcro) can also be selected based on preference.
Does it fit all phones?
It fits most standard smartphones. The telescopic rod adjusts for height, and the flaps provide a wide enough base for typical phone widths. Very large tablets or phones with thick cases might not sit securely if the case interferes with the flap mechanism.
Is it safe for children?
If marketed to children, it must meet ASTM F963 toy safety standards, including small parts testing. The current design uses screws/nuts which could be loose parts. For kids’ markets, a snap-fit or permanently fixed mechanism might be safer and more compliant.
Why did the patent lapse?
The patent was granted in 2018 but lapsed in 2020 because the annual maintenance fees were not paid. This means the technology is now in the public domain in China and has never been protected in the US.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, other US patents may cover similar folding stand mechanisms. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
