Garden Tool Working Arm Folding Device with Quick-Release Lock

Long-handled garden tools like hedge trimmers or pole saws are difficult to store and transport due to their rigid length. Standard telescopic poles can slip under load, while bolted joints require wrenches for every adjustment. This folding device solves both issues by combining a guided rotation axis with a positive axial lock. The movable arm connects to the fixed handle via a seat that holds a necking groove. A guiding sheet on the arm fits into this groove, ensuring the insertion angle remains constant. A hand-turnable knob secures the connection. Once locked, an internal elastic pin prevents rotation and axial movement, keeping the tool rigid during use. To fold, the user simply turns the knob and rotates the arm, collapsing it for storage without needing any separate tools.

The problem

Garden tools with long handles, such as hedge trimmers, pole saws, and leaf blowers, present significant challenges for logistics and consumer storage. Rigid shafts increase shipping volume, raising costs and carbon footprints. While telescopic poles exist, they often lack rigidity under high torque or vibration, leading to slippage. Bolted joint designs provide strength but require users to carry wrenches or screwdrivers for assembly, disassembly, or seasonal storage adjustments. This friction discourages proper maintenance and makes quick field repairs impossible. Furthermore, simple hinge mechanisms may allow unwanted rotation during use, compromising safety and control. There is a need for a joint that offers the rigidity of a solid shaft, the compactness of a folding design, and the convenience of tool-free operation.

The solution

  1. Fixed Pipe Connection: The device attaches to the fixed pipe (1), which typically connects to the operating handle or engine housing. A connecting pipe seat (2) is secured to this fixed pipe. The seat features a necking groove (15) that contracts onto the fixed pipe, held in place by screws passing through hanging lugs (8) on either side of the groove.
  2. Movable Pipe Interface: The movable pipe (7), which carries the working head (blade, nozzle, etc.), is fitted with a guiding connecting sheet (3). This sheet is fixed to the movable pipe via an anchor ear (6). Crucially, the guiding sheet and the central section of the movable pipe remain in the same plane, ensuring a low-profile design.
  3. Guided Assembly: The guiding connecting sheet (3) contains a guide groove (4). During assembly, the movable pipe is inserted into the connecting pipe seat (2). The guide sheet slides into the necking groove, acting as a rail that maintains a consistent insertion angle. This prevents the user from inserting the arm crookedly, which could damage threads or cause imbalance.
  4. Fastening Mechanism: A fastening piece, consisting of a bolt (9) and a knob (5), passes through the hanging lugs (8) and the guide groove (4). The knob allows the user to tighten or loosen the connection by hand. A gasket (17) sits between the knob and the lugs to reduce wear and provide tension.
  5. Locking Action: When the knob is tightened, the system engages two locking features. First, a protruding portion (14) on the guide sheet has a vertex (18) that inserts into a fixed notch (12) on the movable pipe. Second, an elastic bolt (13) mounted on the connecting pipe seat extends into a locking hole (16) on the movable pipe.
  6. Result: With the elastic bolt engaged in the locking hole and the protrusion seated in the notch, the movable pipe cannot rotate relative to the seat, nor can it move axially. This creates a rigid, stable extension suitable for high-torque gardening tasks.

Operating Steps

  1. Insertion: Align the guiding connecting sheet (3) with the necking groove (15) of the connecting pipe seat (2). Slide the movable pipe (7) inward. The guide groove (4) ensures the sheet stays aligned with the bolt path.
  2. Engagement: As the pipe slides in, the protruding portion (14) moves toward the fixed notch (12). Simultaneously, the elastic bolt (13) compresses against the inner wall of the movable pipe.
  3. Tightening: Turn the knob (5) clockwise. This draws the hanging lugs (8) together, clamping the assembly.
  4. Locking: When fully tightened, the elastic bolt (13) springs out into the locking hole (16). The vertex (18) of the protrusion seats firmly in the fixed notch (12). This dual engagement prevents any axial play or rotational movement.
  5. Folding: To store the tool, turn the knob (5) counterclockwise to release tension. Pull the movable pipe (7) slightly outward if necessary to disengage the elastic bolt from the hole (or rely on the pivot point depending on specific design tolerance described). Rotate the movable pipe around the bolt axis until it folds back against the fixed pipe. The guide groove (4) allows this rotation while keeping the parts connected.

Applications

Cordless Hedge Trimmers

Hedge trimmers have long cutting bars that are awkward to store. This folding joint allows the bar to swing back parallel to the handle, halving the footprint in a garage shelf or car trunk.

Pole Saw Pruners

Pole saws require rigidity to push against branches. The locking mechanism ensures the blade doesn’t wobble during cutting, while the folding capability helps landscapers stack multiple poles vertically in transport racks.

Backpack Sprayers

Spray wands often detach completely, getting lost. A folding wand stays attached to the tank hose assembly, rotating down for storage but remaining ready for immediate use when unfolded.

Leaf Blowers

Backpack or handheld blower tubes can be bulky. Folding the tube against the body of the blower makes it easier to hang on a hook or pack into a case, protecting the nozzle from damage.

Where it is less suitable

  • Ultra-High Torque Industrial Tools: While robust, the reliance on a single bolt and elastic pin may not suit heavy-duty agricultural machinery requiring hydraulic locking.
  • Submerged or High-Corrosion Environments: If not properly sealed, sand or debris could jam the guide groove or necking groove, though standard coatings mitigate this for typical garden use.
  • Fixed-Length Requirements: Some specialized tools require absolute straight-line alignment without any potential for angular deviation; this design introduces a pivot point.

Frequently asked questions

How does the folding mechanism work?

The movable arm connects to the fixed handle via a guided slide. You insert the arm, and a guide sheet keeps it aligned. Turning a hand-knob tightens a bolt that pulls the parts together. Inside, a spring-loaded pin snaps into a hole to lock the arm rigidly. To fold, you loosen the knob and rotate the arm around the bolt axis.

Do I need tools to assemble or disassemble it?

No. The design uses a large, ergonomic knob (5) that can be turned by hand. The bolt (9) and guide groove (4) allow the parts to engage without wrenches. This is intended for quick setup and storage by end-users.

Is the connection secure enough for cutting?

Yes. When locked, the elastic bolt (13) engages the locking hole (16), and the protrusion (14) seats in the notch (12). This prevents both axial sliding (pulling apart) and rotational movement (wobbling), providing rigidity comparable to a solid tube for typical garden tool loads.

What materials is it made from?

The patent does not specify exact alloys. Typically, the pipes are aluminum or steel, the connecting seat and guide sheet are durable engineering plastics or cast metals, and the bolt/knob are metal or reinforced plastic. Materials are chosen based on the target tool’s weight class.

Can it be adapted to different pipe sizes?

Yes. The core concept relies on the geometric relationship between the guide sheet and the necking groove. By scaling the diameter of the pipes and the width of the grooves, the mechanism can be adapted to various standard garden tool pole sizes (e.g., 22mm to 30mm).

Does it wear out over time?

Like any mechanical joint, wear can occur at the guide groove and locking interface. Using hardened materials for the bolt and lubricated surfaces for the guide sheet can extend lifespan. Regular cleaning of debris from the necking groove is recommended.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent is in force in China but has no US counterpart. Therefore, manufacturing and selling this specific design in the US does not infringe on this Chinese patent. However, because major competitors like Black & Decker and Techtronic have cited this patent, you should conduct a freedom-to-operate search to ensure you do not infringe on their newer US patents covering similar folding technologies.
