Patent CN107981504B
Updated November 3, 2026Split Luggage with Integrated Folding Table and Chair
Standard suitcases offer storage but no utility at the destination. Travelers often lack a place to sit or work while waiting at airports, train stations, or outdoor venues. This split-luggage design solves this by integrating furniture directly into the case structure. A telescopic pole connects the top and bottom compartments. Attached to this pole is a rotating chair plate with folding legs. A secondary sliding arm extends from the chair plate, supporting a table top. By pulling the handle and rotating the assembly, the user deploys a stable seat and a horizontal surface without carrying separate items. The entire mechanism collapses back into the space between the two luggage shells, keeping the exterior smooth for transport.

The problem
Travelers frequently encounter situations where they need to sit down or organize items on a flat surface, yet carry no portable furniture. Waiting areas in airports, train stations, or outdoor festivals often lack adequate seating or tables. Carrying a separate folding stool or lap desk adds bulk and weight to an already heavy load. Standard suitcases provide vertical storage but zero functional utility once placed on the ground. Users must either stand, sit on dirty floors, or improvise using their own bags as unstable surfaces. There is a clear need for a luggage solution that integrates essential furniture without compromising portability or external dimensions during transit.
The solution
The patent describes a split-type suitcase consisting of an upper branch box (1) and a lower branch box (2). These two sections are connected vertically by a telescopic structure (3) located on one side of the assembly. This structure comprises a fixed section (31) and a telescopic section (32), allowing the distance between the boxes to adjust.
Mounted between the two boxes is a chair plate (4). This plate is rotationally connected to the fixed section of the telescopic pole. It can rotate horizontally around the pole to swing out from between the boxes or tuck back inside. Attached to the underside or sides of the chair plate are chair legs (7). These legs are designed to extend downward so that when the chair plate is rotated out, the legs reach the ground, forming a stable seat.
Also attached to the chair plate is a connecting plate (5) and a table plate (6). The connecting plate slides along a shaft relative to the chair plate. Once slid out, it can rotate upward or remain parallel. The table plate is hinged to the far end of the connecting plate. When deployed, the table plate rotates to a horizontal position, creating a surface adjacent to the seated user. When stowed, the connecting plate slides back, and the table plate folds flat against the chair plate, allowing both to nest safely between the upper and lower luggage cases.

Who it is for
- Outdoor Event Suppliers: Brands selling gear for festivals, camping, or tailgating who want to offer multi-functional luggage that doubles as seating.
- Business Travel Accessories Makers: Companies targeting frequent flyers who need a temporary workspace or resting spot in terminals without buying extra furniture.
- E-commerce Generalists: Sellers looking for high-margin, novelty travel products that solve a specific pain point visible in social media demos.
- Corporate Gift Providers: Firms seeking premium, practical gifts for employees or clients that combine utility with brand visibility.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Upper Branch Box | Top compartment of the suitcase; houses part of the folded furniture. |
| 2 | Lower Branch Box | Bottom compartment; provides base support and storage. |
| 3, 31, 32 | Telescopic Structure | Connects the boxes; includes a fixed pole and extending section. |
| 4 | Chair Plate | Rotates around the fixed pole to deploy or stow the seat. |
| 5 | Connecting Plate | Slides and rotates from the chair plate to support the table. |
| 6 | Table Plate | Hinged to the connecting plate; forms the horizontal work surface. |
| 7 | Chair Legs | Extend from the chair plate to touch the ground when deployed. |
Operating Steps
- Extend the Handle: Pull the telescopic section (32) to raise the upper box (1), creating space between the two cases.
- Rotate the Chair: Swing the chair plate (4) outward around the fixed section (31) until it clears the luggage body.
- Deploy Legs: Unfold or extend the chair legs (7) downwards so they rest firmly on the ground, stabilizing the seat.
- Slide the Arm: Push the connecting plate (5) away from the chair plate along its sliding shaft.
- Flip the Table: Rotate the table plate (6) upward to a horizontal position, creating a usable surface next to the chair.

Applications
Airport Lounges and Gates
Frequent travelers use the unit to sit comfortably while waiting for delayed flights. The integrated table allows them to place laptops, passports, or snacks at eye level, avoiding the discomfort of balancing items on knees or finding empty seats.
Outdoor Festivals and Concerts
Attendees bring this luggage to music festivals or sporting events. It serves as both a bag for personal items and a designated seat for long periods. The table surface is useful for holding drinks or food, reducing the need to buy overpriced venue concessions or stand for hours.
Camping and Picnics
Campers use the lower box for heavy gear and the upper box for lighter items. Upon arrival, the furniture deploys instantly, providing a dry, elevated seat and table for eating or planning routes, eliminating the need to pack bulky folding chairs.
Retail Displays and Trade Shows
Exhibitors use these units as mobile workstations. The luggage stores brochures and samples, while the deployed table creates a small counter area for interacting with customers, saving space in crowded booths.
Where it is less suitable
- Airplane Overhead Bins: The thickness required to house the folded chair and table may exceed standard carry-on depth limits for some aircraft.
- Rough Terrain: The stability relies on the chair legs reaching the ground evenly; uneven surfaces like gravel or grass slopes may cause wobbling compared to wide-base camping stools.
- Heavy Industrial Use: The plastic or lightweight metal components described are optimized for consumer travel loads, not for supporting heavy machinery or extreme weights.
Frequently asked questions
How does the table and chair deploy?
The suitcase consists of two stacked boxes connected by a telescopic pole. To deploy, you pull the handle to separate the boxes. Then, you rotate the chair plate out from between them and unfold the legs. Finally, you slide the connecting arm out and flip the table plate up to create a horizontal surface.
Is it safe to sit on the chair?
The patent describes chair legs that extend to the same plane as the bottom of the lower box. Stability depends on the material strength and the evenness of the ground. For commercial production, rigorous load testing is required to ensure the telescopic pole and hinges can support typical user weights without buckling.
Does it fit in airplane overhead bins?
It depends on the specific dimensions chosen during customization. Because the furniture folds flat between the boxes, the total depth might exceed standard slim carry-on limits. You would need to confirm the final external measurements against current airline regulations for the specific model you intend to produce.
Can I change the size of the table?
Yes. The table plate is attached to a sliding connecting plate. During the design phase, the length of the connecting plate and the diameter of the table plate can be modified to suit different needs, provided they still fit within the gap between the two luggage cases when closed.
What happens if the telescopic pole breaks?
The patent uses a fixed section and a telescopic section. If the pole fails, the structural integrity of the entire unit is compromised. Aluminum or steel alloys with adequate wall thickness are recommended for the pole to resist fatigue from repeated extension and contraction cycles.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is filed only in China and is active there. Since there is no corresponding US patent, you can manufacture and sell this design in the US without infringing this specific Chinese patent. However, manufacturing in China requires licensing or ensuring your version avoids the specific claims of CN107981504B. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check.
