Updated November 7, 2026Multifunctional Zhuang Brocade Pattern Hat and Satchel
Traditional hats offer protection but no storage; bags offer storage but no head coverage. This design merges them. By using a double-layer cap structure with a concealed front zipper, the item transforms from a bowl-shaped hat into a satchel with an internal cavity. Hidden buckles keep the brims aligned during wear, ensuring comfort and style. Side buckles allow for strap attachment, enabling shoulder carry when in bag mode. The use of Zhuang brocade fabric on the brim and sides adds distinct visual identity without compromising the functional core.

The problem
Standard headwear protects the head but offers no way to carry personal items. Conversely, handbags and satchels provide storage but cannot be worn on the head. Travelers, students, and outdoor enthusiasts often need both functions simultaneously, leading to bulky setups where they must carry a bag while wearing a hat. Existing convertible accessories often suffer from visible hardware that disrupts the aesthetic or compromises comfort when worn on the head. There is a need for a compact, dual-purpose item that seamlessly transitions between these two states without sacrificing style or usability.
The solution
The patent describes a multifunctional hat constructed from two main layers: an outer main cap (1) and an inner main cap (2). These layers are joined at the rear end and connected along the sides by side cap pieces (3). A zipper device (4) runs along the front edge of the cap, allowing the user to open or close the space between the outer and inner layers.
When used as a hat, the zipper is closed, and the two brims (5)—one on each layer—are fastened together using a hidden buckle structure (6), typically snap buttons. This creates a unified, bowl-shaped head covering. The brims and side pieces are made from fabric featuring Zhuang brocade patterns, while the main cap bodies may be solid-colored for contrast.
When converted into a satchel, the zipper is opened, separating the layers to form an internal cavity capable of holding objects. The outer layer remains upright, and the inner layer can be adjusted. Straps (7) attach to buckles (8) located on the outer side of the side cap pieces near the outer main cap. This allows the item to be carried over the shoulder like a traditional bag.

Who it is for
- Cultural Tourism Brands: Companies selling regional souvenirs or traditional crafts who want functional merchandise that highlights specific ethnic textiles like Zhuang brocade.
- Travel Gear Manufacturers: Brands targeting hikers or commuters who value multi-functional accessories that reduce load-out weight.
- Fashion Accessory Designers: Creators looking for unique structural designs that merge apparel and bag categories, offering novel silhouette options.
- Educational Institutions: Schools or museums focusing on intangible cultural heritage that need durable, usable examples of traditional patterns integrated into modern daily items.

Applications
Cultural Souvenirs
Tourists visiting regions associated with Zhuang culture seek authentic yet useful items. This hat provides a tangible connection to traditional textiles through its decorative brim and sides, serving as a wearable souvenir that also functions as a practical travel bag.
Urban Commuting
Commuters often carry small essentials like phones, wallets, or keys. Converting the hat to a satchel allows hands-free transport of these items during transit, then switching back to headwear upon arrival at an outdoor destination or workplace.
Outdoor Hiking
Hikers need sun protection and lightweight storage. Wearing the item as a hat protects against UV rays. At rest points, opening the zipper allows quick access to snacks or maps stored in the cavity, reducing the need for a separate bulky backpack for short excursions.
Fashion Editorial
Designers use this structure to create avant-garde looks. The dual-mode functionality allows models to transition between accessories within a single shoot, showcasing versatility and integrating ethnic patterns into contemporary streetwear silhouettes.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy Load Carrying: The patent describes a cavity formed by soft fabric layers; it is not structurally reinforced for heavy books or electronics, unlike rigid briefcases.
- Extreme Weather: While it provides shade, the fabric construction described does not specify waterproofing or insulation properties needed for severe rain or cold conditions.
- Formal Business Settings: The casual, convertible nature and potential bulk when unzipped make it unsuitable for strict professional dress codes requiring sleek, dedicated portfolios.

This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.
What this means for US production
This patent was filed in China and is currently in force. Making or selling this specific patented design in China requires the owner’s permission. However, the public record shows no US counterpart or international family members. Therefore, this specific Chinese patent does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the United States based solely on its existence in China.
Two points to settle early:
- Other patents may exist. Headwear and convertible bag hybrids are competitive fields. While this specific combination of Zhuang brocade patterning and the dual-brim zipper structure appears unique in this document, broader convertible hat/bag concepts or specific zipper mechanisms might be covered by other US patents. A freedom-to-operate (FTO) review is recommended before volume production to ensure no infringement of other intellectual property rights in the target market.
- Textile sourcing. The claim specifies “Zhuang brocade pattern.” If you intend to replicate the exact traditional weave or licensed graphic assets, verify copyright or trademark status of the specific pattern art, which is separate from the structural patent.

Things to plan for (US market)
- CPSC Flammability Standards (16 CFR 1610): Textiles used in apparel must meet general flammability requirements.
- California Prop 65: Warning labels may be required if certain chemicals are present in dyes, plastics (zippers/buckles), or coatings.
- Labeling Requirements: FTC care labeling rules apply to textile products sold in the US.
How a project runs
- Inquiry - Define target demographic, pattern preference, and quantity.
- Design - Finalize dimensions, select zipper placement, determine buckle positions for ergonomic strap attachment.
- Prototype - Create sewn samples to test the conversion mechanism (hat vs. bag stability).
- Pilot run - Small batch production to verify sewing tolerances and hardware durability.
- Production - Full-scale cutting, sewing, and assembly.
Quantities & timeline
Molds are generally not required unless custom injection-molded buckles are chosen; standard stamped or cast hardware is typical. Sewing lines handle the main assembly. Development time depends heavily on sourcing the specific brocade fabric and testing the zipper’s ease of operation in the curved brim area. Send us your preferred materials, sizes, quantities and target price and we will reply with options.
Production notes
Tooling and process
Likely relies on standard industrial sewing equipment and cutting tables. Custom tooling is minimal unless proprietary molded buckles are selected, which would require injection molds. Heat pressing may be used for reinforcing seam areas or applying non-woven interfacing.
Cost drivers
Fabric grade typically has the largest impact on cost, especially if authentic handwoven brocade is sourced versus printed alternatives. Stitch density affects durability and labor time. Hardware quality (zipper teeth strength, buckle plating) is a major cost item. Packaging complexity for retail-ready sets adds overhead.
Prototyping path
We would typically start with a sewn first sample using available substitute fabrics to validate the zipper curve and brim alignment. Proceed to fit grading to ensure the hat sits comfortably on different head shapes. Conduct wear trials to check if the hidden snaps irritate the forehead or if the strap buckles dig in during bag mode.
What we would change before tooling
Typically, adjust the zipper pull tab location to ensure it doesn’t interfere with the chin or neck when worn. Refine the spacing of the side buckles to prevent the strap from twisting during shoulder carry. Verify that the brim stiffness supports the hidden snaps without warping after repeated opening/closing cycles.
Common failure points
Seam slippage along the curved zipper installation is a primary risk. Color fading of the brocade pattern may occur after washing or UV exposure. Sole delamination is not applicable here, but adhesive bonding failures in interfacing could cause the brim to lose shape. Hardware corrosion on metal buckles or zipper teeth is possible if low-grade finishes are used. Size deviation in the final sewn product can affect the tightness of the hat-to-bag conversion.

Frequently asked questions
How does the hat turn into a bag?
You unzip the front zipper device (4). This separates the outer and inner cap layers, creating an open cavity. You then unfasten the hidden buckles (6) between the brims. The side buckles (8) allow you to attach a strap (7), letting you wear the opened structure over your shoulder as a satchel.
Is the zipper uncomfortable when worn as a hat?
According to the patent, the zipper device is positioned at the front end and covered by the brims (5). When the hidden buckles (6) fasten the brims together, the zipper is tucked inside the overlapping brim area, preventing direct contact with the forehead or skin.
What is Zhuang brocade?
It is a traditional textile pattern originating from the Zhuang ethnic group in China. The patent specifies that the brims and side panels are made of fabric featuring this pattern to enhance the cultural and decorative value of the item.
Can I wash it?
Care instructions depend on the specific fabric and hardware chosen. Typically, hand washing or gentle machine washing in a mesh bag is recommended to protect the brocade pattern and prevent zipper damage. Always confirm with the manufacturer’s label.
Does it hold heavy items?
The patent describes a soft-fabric cavity formed by the hat layers. It is suitable for light items like phones, wallets, or sunglasses. It is not designed for heavy loads like laptops or large books, which could distort the hat shape or stress the seams.
Are the straps removable?
Yes. The straps (7) connect via buckles (8) on the side panels. This allows you to remove the straps when using the item strictly as a hat, keeping the look clean and simple.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is in force in China, but the public record shows no US counterpart. Therefore, this specific Chinese patent does not restrict making or selling the design in the US. However, because convertible accessories are a competitive field, we recommend a freedom-to-operate (FTO) check to ensure no other US patents cover similar mechanisms.
