Patent CN108903170B
Updated October 27, 2026Sun Umbrella with Built-In Fan and Magnetic Clamp Shell
Standard sun umbrellas block sunlight but trap heat underneath, leaving people uncomfortable on still days. This design adds a powered air blowing mechanism directly to the umbrella framework. A shell mounted on an umbrella rib houses a storage battery that powers a servo motor connected to fan blades via a transmission shaft. The shell attaches to the rib using a half ring and a clamping rod, both fitted with anti-slip gaskets that grip the outer ring of the umbrella securely. When the shell needs to be removed for charging or storage, a magnetic clamp mechanism releases it. Two same-polarity magnets repel each other when activated, pushing a motion bar that shifts the clamping rod away from the half ring. A driving mechanism with an articulation piece, hinge bar, drive rod, buoyant spheres and a driving spring controls this movement. Air is drawn in through an inlet pipe and disk, then pushed out through a tapered jet pipe to direct a stream of cooling air toward the shaded area below.

The problem
Large sun umbrellas provide shade for patios, pool decks and market stalls, but the canopy traps warm air underneath. On days with little wind, the shaded area remains hot and uncomfortable. Adding a separate standing fan requires floor space, a power cord and its own base, which creates tripping hazards and limits where tables and chairs can be placed. Mounting a fan permanently to the umbrella pole makes it difficult to remove the battery for charging or to store the fan during winter months.
The solution
This patent describes a sun umbrella that integrates a powered cooling unit directly into the canopy framework while keeping it easy to remove.
- A shell (2) is mounted on an umbrella rib of the parasol (1). Inside the shell, a storage battery (3) is fixed to one side of the inner wall.
- An air blowing mechanism (4) sits inside the shell. It includes a servo motor (41) electrically connected to the battery. The servo motor’s shaft connects to a transmission shaft (42), which turns fan blades (43).
- Air enters through an air inlet pipe (201) connected to an air inlet disk (202) on the front side of the shell, and exits through a tapered air jet pipe (203) to direct the flow downward.
- The shell is held in place by a half ring (8) on the rear side and a clamping rod (9). Both parts are bonded with anti-slip gaskets (10) that clamp against the outer ring of the parasol.
- A magnetic clamp mechanism (7) allows quick detachment. It uses a first magnetite (71) and a second magnetite (72) set with the same polarity so they repel each other. The second magnetite connects to a motion bar (73), which is welded to the clamping rod.
- A driving mechanism (75) with an articulation piece (751), hinge bar (752), drive rod (753), buoyant spheres (754), driving spring (755) and ramp blocks (74, 756) controls the motion bar. A connecting plate (5) and reset spring (11) support the assembly inside the shell cavity.

Who it is for
- Patio furniture brands looking to offer shade umbrellas with integrated cooling for residential and hospitality lines.
- Resort and hotel procurement teams that need to keep guests comfortable around pools and outdoor dining areas without adding standalone fans.
- Outdoor event rental companies supplying tents and umbrellas for weddings, markets and festivals where power outlets are scarce.
- Amazon sellers and wholesalers in the garden and outdoor category seeking a differentiated umbrella product for summer seasons.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Parasol | The sun umbrella providing the canopy and ribs. |
| 2 | Shell | Houses the battery and blower; mounts on the rib. |
| 3 | Storage battery | Powers the servo motor; fixed to the shell wall. |
| 4 | Blower mechanism | Generates airflow inside the shell. |
| 41 | Servo motor | Drives the transmission shaft; wired to the battery. |
| 42 | Transmission shaft | Connects the motor to the fan blades. |
| 43 | Fan blades | Pushes air toward the jet pipe. |
| 201 | Air inlet pipe | Draws outside air into the shell. |
| 202 | Air inlet disk | Covers the inlet opening. |
| 203 | Air jet pipe | Tapered outlet directing air downward. |
| 5 | Connecting plate | Supports the internal linkage. |
| 6 | Slide plate | Carries the magnetic clamp mechanism. |
| 7 | Magnetic clamp mechanism | Releases the shell from the rib. |
| 71, 72 | First / second magnetite | Same-polarity magnets that repel to trigger release. |
| 73 | Motion bar | Transfers magnetic force to the clamping rod. |
| 74, 756 | Ramp blocks | Guide the sliding action during release. |
| 75 | Driving mechanism | Articulation piece, hinge bar, drive rod, buoyant spheres and spring. |
| 8 | Half ring | Rear mounting point for the shell. |
| 9 | Clamping rod | Front clamping point; slides to lock or release. |
| 10 | Anti-slip gaskets | Bonded inside the half ring and clamping rod for grip. |
| 11 | Reset spring | Returns the connecting plate after release. |
Operating steps
- Mount the shell - align the half ring and clamping rod around the umbrella rib. The anti-slip gaskets grip the outer ring of the parasol to hold the shell steady.
- Power the fan - the storage battery supplies current to the servo motor. The motor turns the transmission shaft, spinning the fan blades.
- Direct the air - ambient air is drawn through the inlet disk and pipe, accelerated by the blades, and forced out through the tapered jet pipe toward the seating area below.
- Remove the shell - activate the magnetic clamp mechanism. The same-polarity first and second magnetites repel, pushing the motion bar. The motion bar moves the clamping rod via the ramp blocks and driving mechanism, releasing the grip on the rib. The reset spring returns the internal parts when reassembled.

Applications
Poolside lounging
Hotel guests sit under large umbrellas near the water where breezes are often blocked by walls or landscaping. The built-in fan provides directed airflow without requiring a floor-standing unit that could be knocked over by foot traffic.
Outdoor dining patios
Restaurants use multiple umbrellas over dining tables. Integrating the fan into the canopy keeps table space clear for plates and glasses while circulating air across seated diners during warm evenings.
Market stalls and vendor booths
Sellers at open-air markets work under umbrellas for hours. A battery-powered fan removes the need to run extension cords across busy walkways, reducing trip hazards and setup time.
Backyard gardens
Homeowners relaxing in the yard benefit from shade combined with moving air. The detachable shell allows the battery to be brought indoors for charging while the umbrella remains outside.
Sporting events and bleachers
Spectators sitting in temporary shaded areas need portable cooling. The umbrella can be secured to a stand, and the self-contained fan operates independently of venue power.
Where it is less suitable
- Compact personal umbrellas - the shell and battery add weight and bulk intended for large stationary patio umbrellas, not handheld rain or travel umbrellas.
- Windy coastal areas - locations with constant strong natural winds may not require the added mechanical airflow, making the battery and motor unnecessary weight.
- Permanent architectural shade structures - fixed awnings with hardwired ventilation systems serve permanent installations better than a battery-operated attachment.
Frequently asked questions
How does the fan get power?
A storage battery is fixed inside the shell mounted on the umbrella rib. Conducting wires connect the battery output to the servo motor input. The battery is rechargeable and housed within the shell to keep wiring short and protected.
Can the fan shell be removed easily?
Yes. The shell uses a magnetic clamp mechanism. Two magnets of the same polarity repel each other when triggered, pushing a motion bar that slides the clamping rod away from the half ring. This releases the anti-slip gaskets from the umbrella rib so the shell can be lifted off.
Is the fan noisy?
The patent specifies a servo motor connected to a transmission shaft and fan blades, but does not list decibel ratings. Noise levels depend on the motor type, blade pitch and housing insulation, which are set in design and confirmed on prototypes.
Does rain affect the electronics?
The patent describes a shell enclosing the battery and motor, along with an air inlet pipe and disk. Specific waterproof ratings such as IPX4 are not mentioned in the document. Sealing methods and gasket placement for rain protection must be engineered during the design phase.
How long does the battery last on one charge?
The patent does not state battery capacity or runtime. These figures depend on the cell size chosen and the power draw of the servo motor, which are set in design and confirmed on prototypes based on the target operating hours.
Will the extra weight damage the umbrella rib?
The shell is supported by a half ring and a clamping rod that distribute the load across the rib, with anti-slip gaskets preventing point stress. The total weight of the battery, motor and plastic shell must be matched to the rib’s structural capacity during engineering.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has no US or other foreign counterpart, so it does not restrict making or selling this design in the United States. The patent is in force in China until at most 2038-07-26 (if annual fees are paid), meaning production in China requires the owner’s permission. Other companies may hold US patents on umbrella-mounted fans, so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
