Inflatable Baby Climbing Mat with a Bumpy Hump and a Ramp Obstacle

Babies learning to crawl and pull up love to climb over things - cushions, a parent's legs, the edge of the sofa. Foam climbing blocks are bulky and fixed in height. This mat is inflatable. Its base is a rubber air cushion with a plastic plate inside and a rubber layer underneath, so it stays flat on the floor. On top are two different obstacles: a rounded hump with three soft, bubble-shaped bumps on its crest for little hands to grab, and a rectangular block with a sloped face to crawl up and over. Each part is filled through its own valve block, so a parent can start with a low, soft hump and raise the obstacles as the baby gets stronger, and deflate everything for storage.

⛰️

Two kinds of obstacle

A rounded hump and a sloped rectangular ramp give two different ways to climb.

🫧

Bubble grab bumps

Three soft bubble-shaped bumps on the hump give hands and knees something to grip.

🎚️

Adjustable by inflation

Each obstacle and the base fill through their own valve block, so height and firmness can change.

🧱

Stiffened air base

A plastic plate inside the rubber air base keeps the mat flat and steady on the floor.

The problem

Climbing over low obstacles is part of how babies build strength and balance between crawling and walking. Foam play blocks are bulky to store and come in fixed heights, and a single shape offers only one way to climb. According to the patent, the goal is a toy mat that offers babies two different climbing modes, exercises muscle strength and balance as they climb, and builds their confidence to explore.

The solution

  1. The mat body (1) sits on a rubber air cushion (2). Inside it is a fixed plastic plate, with a rubber base layer bonded to the plate’s top.
  2. On top of the air cushion is an arc-shaped obstacle (5): a curved obstacle airbag (501) with its own air tube and hose, an internal rubber ring and fixing sheets.
  3. Three bump structures (506) on the crest of the hump each have a filling bubble (5061) on a curved support, inflated through a nozzle tube with two air holes that link the bubble to the hump.
  4. In front of the hump is an arc-shaped inflation block (6) that feeds it.
  5. A rectangular sloped obstacle (7) - a block with an inclined face - sits beside it, fed by its own inflation block (8).
  6. An air cushion inflation block (10) fills the base.

Who it is for

  • Baby and toddler toy brands adding an active-play product to a line of play mats and gyms.
  • Early-learning and daycare suppliers furnishing infant rooms with soft climbing equipment.
  • Pediatric therapy product companies selling gross-motor play equipment to clinics and families.
  • Online baby brands looking for a play mat that deflates for small apartments.

Setting it up

  1. Inflate the base through its block so the mat lies flat and firm.
  2. Inflate the hump and ramp to the height and softness suited to the baby.
  3. Let the baby explore - crawling up the ramp, over the hump and gripping the bubble bumps, always with an adult present.
  4. Deflate after play to store the mat flat.

Applications

Home play areas

Parents give crawling babies something to climb in the living room, then pack it away.

Daycare infant rooms

Caregivers set up a soft obstacle course for the youngest group.

Baby gyms and play classes

Instructors use adjustable obstacles in parent-and-baby movement classes.

Pediatric therapy

Therapists working on crawling and climbing skills can adjust height and firmness for each child.

Travel and grandparents’ homes

A deflatable mat travels in a bag for visits.

Where it is less suitable

  • Unsupervised play - inflatable toys for babies are used with an adult present.
  • Older toddlers who jump - the mat is built for crawling and climbing, not jumping.
  • Outdoor rough ground - sharp gravel and heat can damage air chambers.

Frequently asked questions

What can a baby do on it?

Crawl up the sloped ramp, climb over the rounded hump and grab the soft bubble bumps on its crest. The patent describes the two obstacles as giving two different ways to climb, to build muscle strength and balance.

Can the height be changed?

Yes. The hump, the ramp and the base each fill through their own inflation block, so each can be inflated more or less to change height and firmness.

What age is it for?

It is meant for babies who are crawling and starting to climb. The age grading is set with the safety testing, and play is always supervised.

Is it safe for babies under 3?

The product is designed and tested to ASTM F963 and the small parts rule. Valves are recessed and bump parts are designed so nothing small can come off.

How is it cleaned?

A removable fabric cover can be washed, and the air chambers are wiped clean. Cover and materials are chosen in design.

Does it fold away?

Yes. Let the air out of each part and the mat folds flat for storage or travel.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until July 2038 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Baby play mats may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
