Patent CN113068672B
Updated November 2, 2026Garden Mosquito Killer Lamp with Rotating Shutter and Air Blowers
Standard garden lights attract insects but do nothing about them. This design integrates a mosquito killer into a landscape lamp. It uses phototaxis to draw mosquitoes in through holes in an outer protective shell. Once inside, air blowers force them down onto an electric grid. A key feature is the rotating outer shutter, driven by a gear motor, which can cover the holes when mosquito control is not needed, keeping the lamp looking like a standard garden light.

The problem
Many outdoor areas suffer from mosquitoes, especially near gardens and patios where people gather. Standard bug zappers are often unsightly, noisy, and disrupt the aesthetic of a landscaped environment. Conversely, regular garden lights attract pests without controlling them, leading to swarms around the bulb and reduced comfort for users. There is a need for a device that blends seamlessly into outdoor decor while providing effective pest control on demand.
The solution
- The device centers on a mounting seat (1) with a bottom plate (11), support column (12), and top plate (13).
- An illumination lamp (2) sits on the top plate, enclosed by an inner protective shell (4) made of transparent toughened glass.
- Surrounding the light is a mosquito repelling assembly (3), consisting of an electric mosquito net (31) mounted on a fixing base (32) at the bottom area.
- An outer protective shell (5), also transparent glass, encloses the assembly. It contains multiple through holes (511) for mosquitoes to enter.
- Inside the space (6) between the shells, air blowers (61) are mounted on the inner wall of the top, blowing air downwards through corresponding vent holes (512).
- A rotating opening and closing shell (7) sleeves over the outer shell (5). Driven by a motor (82) via gears, it rotates to align or block the through holes (511).

Who it is for
- Landscape Architects: Designers seeking functional fixtures that maintain visual harmony in high-end residential or commercial gardens.
- Residential Homeowners: Individuals wanting discreet pest control for patios, decks, and backyard seating areas without cluttering the space with separate traps.
- Hospitality Venues: Hotels and resorts with outdoor dining or lounge areas that require clean, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing mosquito management solutions.
- Lighting Manufacturers: Companies looking to differentiate their product lines by adding integrated smart pest-control features to standard bollard or path lights.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mounting Seat | Base structure (bottom plate, column, top plate). |
| 2 | Illumination Lamp | Central light source attracting mosquitoes. |
| 3, 31 | Mosquito Assembly/Net | Electric grid that kills insects upon contact. |
| 4 | Inner Protective Shell | Glass cover protecting the lamp from weather. |
| 5 | Outer Protective Shell | Glass cylinder with entry holes (511) and vents (512). |
| 6 | Repelling Space | Area between shells where air flows and bugs enter. |
| 7 | Opening/Closing Shell | Rotating outer layer that covers or exposes holes. |
| 8, 82 | Driving Assembly/Motor | Gear system rotating the outer shell. |
| 61 | Air Blowers | Fans pushing air downward to guide bugs to the grid. |
Operating steps
- Activation: When mosquito control is needed, the motor (82) drives the rotating shell (7) to align its connecting holes (711) with the static through holes (511) of the outer shell (5).
- Attraction: Mosquitoes are drawn to the light (2) by phototaxis.
- Entry & Descent: Bugs fly through the aligned holes into the repelling space (6). The air blowers (61) create a downward airflow, forcing the mosquitoes toward the electric net (31) at the bottom.
- Elimination: Contact with the electrified net kills the mosquitoes, which then fall into the collection area.
- Deactivation: To use the lamp as a standard light source, the motor rotates shell (7) to block the holes (511), preventing air flow and bug entry.

Applications
Residential Patios and Decks
Homeowners install these lamps along walkways or near seating areas. The rotating shutter allows them to turn off the trapping mechanism during dinner parties to reduce noise or airflow disturbance, switching it back on later for continuous protection.
Hotel Outdoor Lounges
High-end hotels use these fixtures to maintain ambiance. The glass construction looks like premium landscape lighting. Staff can schedule the shutter rotation to ensure active trapping during peak evening hours when guests are most likely to be seated outdoors.
Commercial Landscaping Projects
Property managers for office parks or retail plazas utilize these units to control pest populations in green spaces. The durable glass shells withstand weather conditions, and the dual-functionality reduces the need for installing both decorative lights and separate industrial zappers.
Garden Path Lighting
Installed along footpaths, these lamps provide visibility while reducing the swarm of insects that typically surrounds standard LEDs. The downward air flow helps keep the immediate vicinity clear of flying pests without requiring chemical sprays.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy Rain/Wind Areas: While the shells protect components, extreme weather might affect the motor’s ability to rotate the shutter smoothly if debris accumulates in the sliding track.
- Non-Mosquito Pests: The design relies on phototaxis specific to mosquitoes; it may not effectively capture larger flies or moths that behave differently around light sources.
- Low-Ceiling Indoors: This is an outdoor-rated fixture; using it indoors may pose safety risks regarding electrical exposure and airflow direction.
Frequently asked questions
How does the rotating shutter work?
An outer glass shell has holes for mosquitoes to enter. A second, movable shell sits on top of it. A small motor rotates this movable shell. When you want to kill mosquitoes, the motor aligns the holes so air and bugs can pass through. When you just want light, the motor rotates the shell to cover the holes, blocking the airflow and entry points.
Why are there air blowers inside?
The blowers are located at the top of the space between the shells. They push air downward. This creates a current that guides mosquitoes, once they enter through the holes, directly toward the electric grid at the bottom, increasing the kill rate.
Is the electric grid safe?
The grid is enclosed within two layers of protective glass shells. It is only accessible if the entire assembly is disassembled. However, standard electrical safety protocols apply. Users should never attempt to clean the grid while the device is plugged in.
Can it be used in the rain?
The design uses sealed glass shells and a robust mounting base. However, the motor and electrical connections must be rated for wet locations. Proper sealing of the sliding interface between the rotating shells is critical to prevent water ingress. We recommend checking the IP rating of the final prototype.
Does the light attract other bugs?
It primarily targets mosquitoes due to the specific airflow and grid placement. Other flying insects may be attracted to the light but may not be guided as effectively to the grid unless they follow the same flight path as mosquitoes.
How loud is the motor?
The patent describes a gear-driven motor. Noise levels depend on the quality of the motor and gear lubrication selected during manufacturing. For hospitality settings, low-RPM motors with silent gear trains are preferred. Specific decibel levels are set in design and confirmed on prototypes.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
Yes. The patent CN113068672B is filed only in China and is active there. It has no US counterpart, so it does not legally restrict making or selling this design in the United States. However, you must ensure your product complies with US electrical safety standards (UL) and check for other existing US patents in the outdoor lighting/pest control sector.
Are you affiliated with the patent owner?
No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
