Sunshade Fishing Hat with Replaceable Mosquito Repellent and Cooling Packs

Standard fishing hats leave anglers exposed to biting insects and head heat. This design integrates two magnetic, swappable modules into the visor area: a repellent pouch filled with herbal medicine, and a cooling pouch that activates instantly by pinching its sides. Inside the cooling pouch, hard protrusions drive magnetic-fluid-weighted needles through a brittle film, mixing ammonium nitrate with water to absorb heat. The cap itself combines sweat-absorbing layers, an insulated visor, and a mesh face/neck veil with a glowing weight ring for visibility in low light.

The problem

Anglers working under direct sunlight often suffer from overheating around the head and neck, while simultaneously dealing with mosquitoes that disrupt focus and cause bites. Traditional caps offer shade but lack active cooling or integrated insect protection. Separate bug nets can obstruct vision or trap heat, and standard cooling inserts require pre-freezing, which is impractical during long trips away from power sources. There is a need for a unified headwear solution that manages temperature and pests without bulky external gear.

The solution

  1. The cap body consists of an outer layer of breathable fabric and a sweat-absorbing inner layer. The visor contains a heat-insulating outer fabric wrapping an elastic support plate to maintain shape and block radiant heat.
  2. An annular magnetic strip is embedded inside the cap body near the base of the crown. This serves as the mounting interface for two distinct pouches.
  3. The mosquito repellent pack attaches to the front/mid section of the magnetic strip. It is filled with traditional Chinese medicine herbs and features a zipper on top for refilling when the scent fades.
  4. The cooling pack attaches below the visor using a magnetic conductive segment. Its core contains a protective film separating ammonium nitrate particles from surrounding water.
  5. On both sides of the cooling pack are pressing protrusions made of hard material. These connect to puncture needles.
  6. Each needle has an internal cavity filled with magnetic fluid. When the pack snaps onto the magnetic strip, the upward attraction aligns the needles vertically against the protective film. Pinching the protrusions drives the needles through the brittle film, releasing the chemicals to mix and cool the area.
  7. A mesh anti-mosquito veil is fixed below the cap body, extending down to a neck-covering gauze made of ice-silk fabric. The lower edge has an elastic band, and a weighted ring coated in fluorescent material sits between the veil and neck guard.

Who it is for

  • Outdoor apparel brands seeking differentiated fishing or hunting headwear with functional accessories.
  • Amazon sellers targeting niche hobbyist markets who value integrated solutions over separate gear.
  • Wholesalers of fishing tackle looking to bundle consumables (repellent herbs) with durable goods (the cap).
  • Event organizers for fishing tournaments or outdoor festivals needing uniform, high-comfort headgear.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
101Cap BodyCrown and visor structure with breathable/insulating layers.
2Annular Magnetic StripEmbedded mount for attaching the two pouches.
3Repellent PackPouch with herbal medicine and a refill zipper.
4Cooling PackPouch with water and chemical compartment; activated by pinching.
5Protective FilmBrittle separator inside the cooling pack holding ammonium nitrate.
6Puncture NeedlesDriven by protrusions to break the film; weighted by magnetic fluid.
401Pressing ProtrusionsHard side tabs used to activate the cooling mechanism.
102Mosquito VeilMesh screen protecting the face.
103Neck GauzeIce-silk fabric covering the neck; retains cool air.

Operating Steps

  1. Attachment: Snap the repellent pack and cooling pack onto the internal magnetic strip. The magnetic field aligns the needles in the cooling pack vertically.
  2. Activation: When cooling is needed, pinch the side protrusions of the cooling pack. The mechanical force drives the needles through the brittle protective film.
  3. Reaction: Ammonium nitrate particles fall into the water chamber. Dissolving the salt absorbs significant heat, lowering the temperature of the pack and the immediate head/neck area.
  4. Protection: The mesh veil blocks insects physically. The herbal scent from the repellent pack deters them further. The neck gauze traps cooled air sinking from the head.
  5. Maintenance: Open the zipper on the repellent pack to add fresh herbs. Replace the entire cooling pack once the reaction completes, as it is single-use per activation cycle.

Applications

Daytime Shore Fishing

Anglers sitting still for hours benefit from the constant herbal scent deterring mosquitoes and the ability to trigger cooling bursts during peak midday heat without leaving the spot.

Boat and Kayak Angling

On open water, wind exacerbates sun exposure and insect annoyance. The insulated visor reduces glare and heat transfer, while the secure magnetic attachments prevent packs from falling off during movement.

Insect-Prone Wetland Hunting

In marshy areas where bugs are dense, the full-face mesh veil combined with the neck guard creates a physical barrier, while the repellent pack adds a chemical layer of defense.

Night Fishing Operations

The fluorescent-coated weight ring ensures the veil stays taut and visible in low light, helping teammates locate each other while the repellent continues to function in darkness.

Where it is less suitable

  • Extreme Cold Environments: The cooling mechanism is counterproductive if ambient temperatures are already low.
  • High-Impact Sports: The rigid protrusions and glass-like brittle film may not withstand heavy impacts compared to standard padded helmets.
  • Short-Trip Urban Use: The complexity of swapping chemical packs is unnecessary for casual city wear.

Frequently asked questions

How does the cooling pack work?

It uses a chemical reaction. The pack contains water and a sealed compartment of ammonium nitrate particles separated by a brittle film. When you pinch the hard protrusions on the sides, internal needles pierce the film. The ammonium nitrate dissolves in the water, absorbing heat and causing the pack to become cold immediately.

Do I need to freeze the cooling pack beforehand?

No. Unlike gel packs, this system activates chemically on demand. You simply carry the dry, unactivated pack and squeeze it when you need relief from the heat.

Can the repellent pack be refilled?

Yes. The patent describes a zipper on the top of the repellent pack. Once the herbal scent fades, you can unzip it, remove the old herbs, and insert new traditional Chinese medicine or compatible repellent herbs.

Is the cooling pack reusable?

The patent describes a single-activation mechanism where the film is pierced permanently. Typically, these chemical cold packs are designed for one-time use per event. However, the housing might be reusable if you can replace the internal film and chemical cartridges, though the patent does not specify a modular replacement for the chemical core itself.

Why are there magnets inside the hat?

The magnets serve two purposes. First, they allow the user to snap the repellent and cooling packs onto the hat easily. Second, in the cooling pack, the magnetic field attracts the magnetic fluid inside the needles, aligning them perfectly vertical so they pierce the film straight when pinched.

Does the hat have a face net?

Yes. Claim 5 and 6 describe a fixed mesh veil below the cap body and an ice-silk neck guard. This provides physical protection against insects while allowing airflow.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed due to non-payment of fees, so it does not restrict the design in the US. However, selling products with chemical cooling mechanisms or repellent claims requires careful attention to US EPA and DOT regulations. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check and regulatory review before volume production.
