Patent CN113384025B
Updated November 3, 2026Long-Acting Mosquito Repellent Summer Sun Hat with Automatic Liquid Release
Standard repellent hats lose efficacy quickly as the spray evaporates or washes off. This design integrates a self-regulating liquid delivery system directly into the hat structure. A reservoir at the top holds the repellent fluid. Gravity feeds the fluid through adjustable distributor cylinders, where a swelling sensor triggers a mechanical valve. This valve opens briefly to let a small amount of fluid pass to the absorption ropes, then closes slowly, preventing rapid depletion. The result is a steady, long-duration release of repellent across the brim and sides.

The problem
Traditional insect-repellent clothing relies on chemical treatments that degrade after washing or exposure to sunlight. Spray-on applications require frequent reapplication, which is inconvenient for outdoor workers, hikers, or gardeners who cannot stop to treat their gear repeatedly. Existing hats with built-in dispensers often leak or empty too quickly because they lack a precise control mechanism, leading to wasted product and inconsistent protection throughout the day. Users need a solution that provides steady, long-lasting coverage without constant maintenance.
The solution
- The head-wearing cap body (101) supports a sun-shading brim (102). At the top of the cap, a liquid storage spherical shell (103) acts as the reservoir.
- The shell connects to an inlet pipe (104) sealed by a tube cover (105), allowing users to refill the repellent fluid. A transparent observation plate (106) shows the fill level.
- Multiple diversion diffusion ropes (107) made of water-absorbing material are attached to the outer surface of the cap body. These ropes deliver the repellent to the air around the wearer’s head.
- Inside the base of the spherical shell, adjustable liquid-separating cylinders (108) connect to each rope via liquid inlet holes (109).
- Each cylinder contains a water-swelling contact ball (002) and a fast-rising slow-lowering ball. When the swelling ball absorbs moisture, it expands and pushes up against the bottom membrane of the hard-shell ball.
- This pressure forces air through a one-way check valve (305), causing the top membrane to bulge and lift the hole-blocking plug (110). This temporarily opens the inlet hole, letting a measured amount of liquid flow into the cylinder and onto the rope.
- As the swelling ball dries and contracts, air returns slowly through micro-holes, lowering the plug and closing the hole. This cycle repeats, extending the effective period of the repellent.

Who it is for
- Outdoor apparel brands looking to differentiate their summer lines with functional, active-wear features beyond simple UV protection.
- Garden and landscaping suppliers needing durable headwear for workers who spend hours in mosquito-prone environments without access to sprays.
- Camping and hiking retailers offering specialized gear that solves the common complaint of short-lived repellent efficacy on clothing.
- Wholesale distributors seeking unique products for seasonal promotions in regions with high mosquito activity during summer months.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 101, 102 | Cap Body & Brim | Standard hat structure providing shade and mounting points. |
| 103 | Spherical Shell | Stores the liquid mosquito repellent at the crown. |
| 104, 105 | Inlet Pipe & Cover | Allows refilling and seals the reservoir. |
| 106 | Observation Plate | Transparent window to check liquid levels. |
| 107 | Diffusion Ropes | Absorbent strands that wick liquid to the surface. |
| 108 | Separating Cylinders | Regulate flow from the reservoir to specific ropes. |
| 002 | Swelling Contact Ball | Expands when wet to trigger the valve; shrinks when dry. |
| 301 | Hard Spherical Shell | Contains the pneumatic actuator for the plug. |
| 305 | Check Valve | Controls air flow direction for fast rise/slow fall action. |
| 110 | Hole Blocking Plug | Opens/closes the liquid path based on ball position. |
Operating steps
- Refill: User pours repellent fluid into the spherical shell (103) via the inlet pipe (104).
- Activation: Fluid contacts the water-swelling contact ball (002) inside the separating cylinder (108).
- Expansion: The ball (002) absorbs moisture and expands, pushing up the bottom elastic membrane (302) of the hard shell (301).
- Air Transfer: Air is forced through the one-way check valve (305) to the top chamber, lifting the top membrane (303).
- Release: The rising membrane lifts the hole-blocking plug (110), opening the inlet hole (109). A small batch of liquid flows into the cylinder and wicks onto the diffusion rope (107).
- Reset: As the ball (002) dries slightly or stabilizes, it stops expanding. Air leaks back slowly through micro-holes (306), lowering the plug (110) and closing the hole.
- Cycle: The process repeats gradually, maintaining a steady supply of repellent to the ropes over many hours.

Applications
Gardening and Landscaping
Workers face constant mosquito exposure while tending plants. The hat is designed to keep releasing repellent without interrupting work for re-spraying, keeping hands free and skin covered.
Camping and Hiking
Tents and campsites attract insects in the evening. This hat is designed for passive protection during rest periods or trail walks, reducing the need for bulky chemical bottles in a pack.
Fishing and Boating
Open-water activities involve significant wind and sweat, which can wear away topical repellents. The integrated system is designed to maintain a steady release while the wearer is active.
Construction and Field Work
Laborers in rural or swampy areas suffer from insect bites that cause distraction and discomfort. The textile construction is suited to daily wear, while the mechanism is designed to keep releasing repellent steadily.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy rain environments - Rain may dilute the repellent or slow the swelling ball’s drying cycle, so the release rate may drift from the intended pattern.
- Short-duration use - For quick errands, a standard spray is more cost-effective; this mechanism is optimized for all-day exposure.
- High-heat industrial settings - Extreme temperatures might accelerate evaporation or alter the viscosity of the liquid, potentially affecting the valve timing.
Frequently asked questions
How does the hat know when to release liquid?
It uses a passive physical mechanism. A ball inside the valve swells when it touches the repellent fluid. This expansion pushes a piston up, opening a small port to let a bit of fluid out. As the ball dries slightly or settles, it contracts, and air leaks back slowly through tiny holes, closing the port. This creates a rhythmic, automated drip.
Can I use any mosquito repellent liquid?
The patent describes using “mosquito repellent floral water,” implying liquid formulations. However, the viscosity matters. Too thick, and it won’t flow through the micro-channels; too thin, and it may drain too fast. You should confirm compatibility with your chosen active ingredient during prototyping.
Is the hat waterproof?
The patent mentions materials like TPU and elastic membranes for the internal parts, suggesting water resistance. However, the hat body is typically fabric. While the reservoir is sealed, heavy rain might soak the outer fabric. The diffusion ropes are exposed to the elements, so performance in storms may vary.
How long does one fill last?
The patent aims for “long-acting” effects by releasing fluid in batches rather than all at once. Exact duration depends on the size of the reservoir, the concentration of the repellent, and environmental conditions like heat and wind. Specific hours are set in design and confirmed on prototypes.
Can the hat be washed?
The internal valve and reservoir are delicate mechanical parts. Typically, such designs require removing the insert or hand-washing the fabric carefully to avoid damaging the seals. Machine washing is likely not supported unless the entire unit is removable and robustly sealed.
Does the solar heat-absorbing feature help?
One optional claim mentions a thermal core and heat-absorbing paint on the ropes. Theoretically, increased temperature accelerates evaporation and diffusion. This could boost effectiveness in sunny weather, but it also risks faster depletion of the liquid.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed due to non-payment of fees, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, selling devices that dispense pesticides involves EPA regulations. Ensure your marketing and product configuration comply with US federal and state laws regarding insect repellents.
