Suspended Power Distribution Equipment Safety Warning Device with Flexible LED Board

Warning signs near electrical equipment need to be visible, adaptable to different mounting points, and functional even during a power outage. This suspended device uses a triangular frame of three plates joined by rotating shafts. A flexible LED board on the back provides illumination, while rotating slats inside the front plate allow workers to pivot out the specific warning symbol needed for the task. The suspension piece at the top offers multiple connection methods: a positioning rod slides along a dumbbell-shaped chute to adjust the height, flip-out hangers hook onto equipment holes, or the entire unit can be hung directly. Because the mechanical symbol slats do not rely on electricity, the device serves as a warning tool during power failures.

The problem

Safety warnings around power distribution equipment must remain visible regardless of the installation environment or power status. Fixed signs often cannot adapt to different hanging points on transformers, switchgear, or overhead lines. When a power failure occurs, illuminated signs go dark, leaving workers without visual guidance. Additionally, carrying multiple separate signs for different warning messages adds bulk to maintenance kits. A single device that adjusts its mounting position, displays selectable symbols mechanically, and provides flexible illumination addresses these operational gaps.

The solution

The device solves these issues through a modular triangular frame and interchangeable components.

  1. Three plates (first plate, second plate, third plate) connect via rotating shafts to form a triangular enclosure. In a specific application scene described in the patent, the interval between adjacent plates is 60 degrees, forming an equilateral triangle.
  2. A suspension piece sits at the top. Its center features a dumbbell-shaped chute consisting of a bar groove with slotted holes at both ends. A positioning rod passes through this chute and screws into the top of the first plate, allowing the hanging height to slide and adjust.
  3. Flip-out hangers attach to the sides of the suspension piece. They rotate between 0 and 60 degrees and clamp into preset grooves on the suspension piece surface, offering alternative hooking methods.
  4. A flexible LED board mounts on the back side of the slat assembly. It consists of several LED board pieces connected by shafts, attached to the frame by movable bars on both sides.
  5. Inside the first plate, a plate groove holds at least two rotating slats. Each slat pivots on a shaft connected to the groove’s inner wall, with a different prompt symbol welded to its bottom end.
  6. The outer surface of each rotating slat is electroplated with a magnetic attraction layer. When pushed back into the plate groove, the slat connects magnetically to the inner wall.

Who it is for

  • Electrical utility companies maintaining substations and distribution networks who need standardized, adaptable warning markers for field crews.
  • Industrial facility managers overseeing factory power rooms where equipment layouts change and fixed signage is impractical.
  • Electrical safety equipment distributors supplying maintenance contractors with versatile, multi-message warning tools.
  • Commercial building maintenance teams managing switchgear rooms who require clear visual indicators during scheduled power shutdowns.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1First plateFront face of the triangle; contains the plate groove (101).
2Second plateForms one side of the triangular frame.
3Third plateForms the other side; has a recess (31) at the bottom center matching the suspension piece width, with a threaded hole for the positioning rod.
4Suspension pieceTop mounting bracket with the dumbbell-shaped chute (41) and side hangers (42).
5Flexible LED boardRear illumination panel made of segmented LED pieces linked by shafts.
6Rotating slatsPivot out of the plate groove to display prompt symbols; held by magnetic layers.
7Positioning rodScrews into the first plate and slides through the chute to set the hanging depth.
8Movable barsConnect the flexible LED board to both sides of the slat assembly.

Operating steps

  1. Mounting - Select one of three hanging modes. First, insert the positioning rod through the chute and screw it into the first plate, then hook the chute onto the distribution equipment. Second, screw the positioning rod in, flip the side hangers upward, and hang them on equipment holes. Third, unscrew the positioning rod entirely and insert it into the threaded hole in the third plate’s bottom recess to hang the device differently.
  2. Selecting a symbol - Pull the desired rotating slat out of the plate groove. The slat pivots on its shaft to display the welded prompt symbol to workers below.
  3. Illumination - The flexible LED board on the back provides light. Its segmented design allows it to bend with the frame.
  4. Storage - Push the slats back into the groove where the magnetic layer holds them. Remove the bolt connecting the first and third plates to fold the triangle flat.

Applications

Substation maintenance zones

Utility workers performing scheduled maintenance on transformers need clear boundaries. The device hangs directly on the equipment, and the rotating slats allow the crew to select the exact warning message for the active task without carrying multiple signs.

Indoor switchgear rooms

Factory power distribution rooms have tight spaces and varied panel shapes. The adjustable positioning rod sliding in the dumbbell chute lets installers set the exact drop length so the sign clears nearby busbars and cables.

Temporary power outage sites

When circuits are de-energized for repair, electronic signs lose power. The mechanical rotating slats remain fully functional, providing physical prompt symbols to approaching personnel during the blackout.

Construction site temporary panels

Temporary distribution boxes on building sites move frequently. The foldable triangular frame packs flat when the bolt is removed, fitting easily into maintenance trucks until the next setup location is ready.

Overhead line equipment

Pole-mounted switches and reclosers lack flat surfaces for adhesive signs. The flip-out hangers, which rotate up to 60 degrees and lock into preset grooves, hook securely over crossarms or equipment brackets.

Where it is less suitable

  • Permanent architectural signage - buildings requiring flush-mounted, aesthetic directory signs will use rigid printed panels rather than suspended utility frames.
  • Explosive atmospheres - environments requiring intrinsically safe, sealed enclosures may restrict the use of exposed LED segments and moving mechanical slats unless specifically certified.

Frequently asked questions

How many ways can this device be hung?

The patent describes three mounting modes. First, a positioning rod connects the suspension piece to the top plate, and the dumbbell-shaped chute hooks onto the equipment. Second, the positioning rod is used while the side hangers flip out to hook onto equipment holes. Third, the positioning rod is unscrewed from the top and inserted into a threaded hole in the bottom recess of the third plate for an alternative hang.

What happens to the warning during a power failure?

The mechanical rotating slats do not require electricity. Workers pivot a slat out of the plate groove to display the welded prompt symbol, so the device functions as a physical warning tool even when the power distribution equipment is de-energized.

How do the warning symbols change?

The first plate contains a groove holding at least two rotating slats, each with a different symbol welded to its bottom end. You simply pull out the slat that carries the required message for the current task.

Do the slats fall out during transport?

No. The outer surface of each rotating slat is electroplated with a magnetic attraction layer. When pushed back into the plate groove, the slat connects magnetically to the inner wall, keeping it secure.

Can the whole device be packed flat?

Yes. The three plates form a triangle connected by rotating shafts. A bolt fixes the first and third plates together at one corner. Removing this bolt allows the assembly to fold down for easier collection and loading.

What is the flexible LED board made of?

It consists of several individual LED board pieces connected to each other by shafts, allowing the strip to flex. Movable bars on both sides attach this flexible assembly to the back of the triangular plate frame.

How does the height adjustment work?

The suspension piece has a dumbbell-shaped chute in its middle, made of a bar groove with slotted holes at both ends. The positioning rod passes through this chute and screws into the top of the first plate, allowing the device to slide up or down before being secured.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

This patent was filed only in China and is in force in China until at most 2042-06-13 (if annual fees are paid). It has no US counterpart, so it does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the United States. However, electrical safety signage may be covered by other US patents or strict OSHA/ANSI regulations - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check and compliance review before volume production.
