Patent CN116160935B
Updated October 31, 2026Foldable Car Seat Table with Adjustable Rotating Mechanism
Standard fixed tables often require long boards or complex sliding rails to reach the user's lap area, which can interfere with the armrest or look bulky. This design solves it with geometry rather than length. By using a dual-plate rotating mechanism with specific arc and linear tracks, the table board physically moves away from the pivot point as it swings open. This allows a compact board stored flat on the armrest to extend past the seat center line when in use, providing comfortable reach for the driver or passenger without needing extra-long materials or visible telescoping rods under the top.

The problem
Many aftermarket or integrated car seat tables struggle with reach. If the table is attached directly to the armrest and rotates around a fixed hinge, the edge of the table may not extend far enough toward the occupant’s lap or chest, especially for taller drivers. To solve this, manufacturers often make the table board significantly longer, which increases weight, cost, and the risk of hitting interior panels when folded. Alternatively, they use sliding rails or telescoping arms, which add mechanical complexity and potential rattling points. There is a need for a simple rotational system that maximizes usable surface area within a compact footprint.
The solution
- A table assembly (15) is mounted to a seat armrest (1) via an adjustable rotating mechanism.
- The mechanism consists of a rotating shaft (10) carrying a first rotating plate (11) and a second rotating plate (12).
- A movable pin assembly (14) connects the table to these plates. It travels through an arc-shaped hole (18) in the first plate and a linear hole (13) in the second plate.
- As the table rotates counterclockwise from its flat storage position, the pin moves along these paths, shifting the attachment point from the left side of the central axis to the right side.
- This geometric shift causes the table to extend outward, positioning its right end beyond the vertical section of the seat center line (H-point).
- An elastic limiting pin (16) with a spherical contact provides resistance and reset capability, locking the table in position once the desired angle is reached.

Who it is for
- Automotive Interior Suppliers: Companies developing modular seat accessories or premium trim packages that require space-saving solutions.
- RV and Van Conversion Specialists: Builders who need multi-functional surfaces in tight cabin spaces where standard drop-down trays lack reach.
- Commercial Fleet Managers: Operators of buses or shuttles looking for durable, low-maintenance table mechanisms that don’t jam easily.
- Aftermarket Accessory Brands: Sellers targeting drivers who want a stable work surface without permanent installation modifications.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seat Armrest | Base structure supporting the table mechanism. |
| 10 | Rotating Shaft | Central pivot for the entire assembly. |
| 11, 12 | First & Second Rotating Plates | Metal plates with specific cutouts guiding motion. |
| 13 | Linear Hole | Track in the upper plate controlling lateral shift. |
| 18 | Arc-shaped Hole | Track in the lower plate controlling angular sweep. |
| 14 | Movable Pin Assembly | Connects table to plates; slides through holes. |
| 15 | Table Assembly | The flat plate and folding sub-plate used as a surface. |
| 16 | Elastic Limiting Pin | Spring-loaded ball pin that holds the table steady. |
Opening and closing
- Start State: The table assembly lies flat on the armrest. The pin is at the start of the arc and linear holes.
- Rotate Counterclockwise: Lift and swing the table outward. The pin moves simultaneously along the arc (18) and linear (13) paths.
- Extension Phase: As the pin reaches the tail ends of the holes, the connection point shifts to the right of the rotation axis, pushing the table further out.
- Locking: The elastic pin (16) snaps into place against the straight edges of the rotating plate, preventing unintended horizontal rotation.
- Storage: Rotate clockwise back to the flat position; the elastic pin releases and resets.

Applications
Driver Work Surface
Allows the driver to rest a laptop or tablet closer to their body while parked, improving ergonomics without extending the table length excessively.
Passenger Convenience
Provides a stable surface for passengers in the front seat to eat or read, positioned comfortably relative to their knees and torso.
Compact RV Interiors
Ideal for small campers where space is limited; the table folds flat when not in use, clearing the aisle or seating area quickly.
Bus and Shuttle Seating
Offers a robust, simple mechanism for public transport seats, reducing maintenance compared to complex sliding rail systems.
Where it is less suitable
- Heavy Industrial Loads: The mechanism relies on plastic bushings and thin metal plates; it is designed for light office supplies, not heavy machinery.
- Fixed Non-Rotating Seats: Requires a compatible armrest structure that can support the mounting bracket; not all seats have this feature.
- Extreme Temperatures: While materials are standard, prolonged exposure to extreme heat may affect the elasticity of the spring pin over time.
Frequently asked questions
How does the table extend without being longer?
The magic is in the linkage. Instead of just spinning around a fixed point, the connection between the table and the armrest slides along curved and straight tracks (holes) in two metal plates. As you rotate the table, this sliding action pushes the table outward, moving the pivot point effectively. This allows a short table to reach further than its physical length would suggest.
Is the mechanism noisy or prone to rattling?
The design uses plastic bushings and a spring-loaded elastic pin to dampen vibrations. The elastic pin also acts as a detent, holding the table firmly in place once set, which reduces play and noise during vehicle movement. Proper lubrication of the pin assembly during assembly ensures smooth, quiet operation.
Can it support a heavy laptop?
The patent describes a lightweight structure using metal plates and plastic components. Load capacity depends on the thickness of the steel/aluminum plates and the strength of the fasteners. For typical office use (laptops, tablets, books), it should suffice, but heavy industrial loads are not recommended. Specific weight limits are confirmed on prototypes.
Does it fit any car seat?
No. It requires a seat armrest with a specific mounting interface or skeleton frame to attach the rotating shaft and base plates. It is best suited for custom interior builds, RV conversions, or commercial fleet vehicles where the armrest structure is known.
What happens if the spring pin fails?
If the elastic limiting pin loses tension, the table might drift slightly during rotation but will still function mechanically via the plates. The pin is replaceable. Regular inspection of the spring compression is advised for high-use applications.
Are the materials safe for car interiors?
The patent mentions metal and plastic parts. For US sales, you must select materials that comply with FMVSS 302 flammability standards. We can supply certified ABS/PC plastics and treated metals upon request.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent CN116160935B is active in China but has no US counterpart. Therefore, this specific patent does not block US sales. However, automotive interior mechanisms are heavily patented globally. You must perform a freedom-to-operate search to ensure your design doesn’t infringe on other US patents before mass production.
