Patent CN118058647B
Updated November 4, 2026Self-Cleaning Pet Hair Roller Attachment for Vacuum Cleaners
Standard vacuum rollers tangle with long pet hair, requiring users to cut strands by hand—a messy and time-consuming process. This patent describes a brush head that solves this by integrating mechanical retraction and air-pressure-assisted cleaning. A toothed plate and gear ring allow the roller assembly to lift and rotate out of the way when not in use. During operation, bristles extend to grip surfaces. After use, the vacuum’s exhaust or suction path triggers piston rings and springs that slide the bristle housings inward, collapsing the hair onto a scraping piece that wipes it into a bin. The result is a roller that stays clean without manual intervention.

The problem
Household vacuum cleaners struggle significantly with pet hair. Long strands wrap tightly around standard rotating brushes, creating dense mats that block airflow and reduce cleaning efficiency. Users typically have to stop frequently to manually cut and pull these hairs off the roller using scissors or their fingers, which is unsanitary and tedious. Furthermore, traditional attachments do not protect the bristles when stored; they remain extended, collecting dust and becoming damaged over time. There is a need for a brush head that can actively clear itself during use and retract its working elements when idle.
The solution
- Rotating Roller Assembly: The core component is a roller fitted with bristles and adhesive strips. It is mounted on a lifting piece that slides within guide frames inside a containing shell.
- Gear-Driven Retraction: A toothed plate fixed to the shell base meshes with a gear ring on the lifting piece. When the user pushes a pressing plate down, the lifting piece descends, causing the roller to rotate and align parallel to the ground for cleaning. When released, spring forces return it to a stowed position.
- Pneumatic Bristle Housing: Each bristle set is housed in a fixed box with a sliding pipe. These boxes are connected to the vacuum’s air path via vent holes and L-shaped grooves.
- Scraping Mechanism: An annular scraping piece slides along the roller’s outer surface. It is guided by ribs and slots, allowing it to wipe hair off the roller as the bristles retract.
- Electromagnetic Control: In advanced embodiments, an electromagnetic coil and piston ring system control the flow of air to trigger the cleaning cycle automatically when the vacuum is switched on or off.

Who it is for
- Vacuum Accessory Brands looking to differentiate their product lines with a “self-cleaning” feature that appeals to pet owners.
- OEM Manufacturers supplying private-label attachments for major vacuum brands who need to solve the common complaint of hair tangling.
- Pet Product Retailers stocking high-end grooming and cleaning tools where maintenance-free operation is a key selling point.
- Industrial Cleaning Suppliers providing equipment for facilities with heavy animal presence, such as veterinary clinics or kennels, where downtime for manual cleaning is costly.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Containing Shell | Houses the mechanism and screws onto the vacuum pipe. |
| 2, 3 | Avoidance Groove & Guide Frames | Allow the roller assembly to move vertically and rotate. |
| 4, 39 | Toothed Plate & Gear Ring | Convert vertical motion into rotational alignment for storage vs. use. |
| 5 | Lifting Piece | Carries the roller; moves up/down based on user input and springs. |
| 6, 7 | Rolling Piece & Roller | The central cylinder that rotates against the floor/surface. |
| 9, 10 | Fixed Boxes & Dehairing Parts | Housings that contain the bristles and slide inward to collapse them. |
| 14, 18, 19 | Sliding Pipe & Vents | Connect the interior of the roller to the vacuum’s air stream. |
| 20, 22 | Bristles & Adhesive Strips | Pick up hair via friction and static charge. |
| 52, 55 | Hair Scraping Piece | Wipes collected hair off the roller surface. |
| 47, 45 | Electromagnetic Coil & Piston | Automates the air-flow switching for the cleaning cycle. |
Operating Steps
- Deployment: The user pushes the pressing plate (30) downward. This compresses the connecting spring (34) and drives the lifting block (33) down. The gear ring (39) rotates the roller (7) so it lies flat and parallel to the surface.
- Cleaning: As the user pushes the head across a carpet or sofa, the roller spins. Bristles (20) generate static electricity to attract hair, while adhesive strips (22) grab longer strands. Longer hair winds onto the roller but is prevented from tightening excessively by the spacing of the fixed boxes.
- Retraction & Cleaning Cycle: When the user lifts the head away from the surface, the vacuum’s suction or exhaust path is utilized. In the described method, activating the vacuum creates negative pressure inside the roller chambers. This pressure difference drives the sliding pipes (14) and fixed boxes (9) inward, pulling the bristles back into the housing.
- Hair Removal: Simultaneously, the annular scraping piece (52) is pulled along the guide groove (51). Because the bristles have retracted, the hair that was wound on the outer surface is exposed and scraped directly into the garbage bin or collection area, leaving the roller clean for the next use.

Applications
Upholstery and Furniture Cleaning
Pet owners often struggle to remove cat and dog hair from fabric sofas and chairs. This brush head allows for vigorous scrubbing with the bristles, followed by an immediate self-clearing action, ensuring the tool doesn’t become clogged halfway through cleaning a large sectional.
Carpet Maintenance
On plush carpets, standard vacuums leave behind embedded fur. The rolling friction and static generation of this device help lift deep-set hair. The automatic retraction prevents the brush from matting down when passing over rugs or corners, maintaining consistent contact pressure.
Veterinary Clinics and Kennels
Professional groomers and vets require tools that are easy to sanitize and maintain between animals. The ability to quickly clear hair from the roller without touching it reduces cross-contamination risks and saves significant labor hours in high-volume settings.
Hard Floor Edges and Corners
The compact design and ability to stow the bristles make it suitable for cleaning tight spaces along baseboards. When not actively scrubbing, the roller can be rotated upright to fit into narrow gaps without damaging the bristles or dragging debris.
Where it is less suitable
- Wet Surfaces: The adhesive strips and mechanical sliding parts may degrade if used on wet floors or liquids, as the patent focuses on dry friction and air-pressure mechanics.
- Very Fine Dust: While effective for hair, the open structure of the sliding boxes might allow fine particulate matter to enter the mechanism, potentially jamming the sliders if not regularly maintained.
- High-Speed Industrial Lines: The manual push-pull nature of the deployment step makes it better suited for handheld consumer applications rather than automated robotic arms moving at industrial speeds.
Frequently asked questions
How does the self-cleaning actually work?
It uses the vacuum’s own air pressure. When you lift the head off the surface, the change in airflow or a triggered valve causes internal pistons and springs to slide the bristle housings inward. This collapses the bristles, exposing the wrapped hair, which is then wiped off by a dedicated scraping piece.
Do I need to buy special replacement parts?
The adhesive strips (glue Mao Zhi) are consumables and will need periodic replacement. The bristles and mechanical parts are designed to be durable, but the plastic sliding components may wear over years of heavy use. We recommend stocking spare adhesive pads.
Will it fit my specific vacuum brand?
The patent describes a threaded connection to a “dust collector exhaust pipe.” To fit brands like Dyson or Shark, we would need to manufacture custom adapter rings or modify the mounting interface in our design phase. Please specify your vacuum model.
Is it safe for hardwood floors?
Yes, but caution is advised. The bristles are designed for friction-based pickup. On very delicate finishes, the static charge and physical brushing might cause micro-scratches if pushed too hard. It is primarily optimized for carpets, rugs, and upholstery.
Does it require batteries?
The basic mechanical version (Claims 1-5) does not require batteries. It operates entirely through user manipulation and vacuum airflow. The advanced version (Claims 6-7) includes an electromagnetic coil and microcontroller, which would require a battery pack or external power source.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is filed only in China and is currently in force there. It has no US counterpart. Therefore, you can legally make and sell this design in the US without infringing this patent. However, because the vacuum accessory market is heavily patented, a Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) search is strongly recommended to check for other US patents covering similar self-cleaning mechanisms.
