Updated November 4, 2026Tool for Live Disassembly of Bird Repellers on Power Lines
Maintaining bird repellers on high-voltage lines traditionally requires complex rigging or de-energization. This manual tool allows technicians to mount and remove repellers while the line is live. By integrating a screw-driven horizontal slider and a gear-transmitted vertical lift-and-tighten mechanism, it provides precise control over the repeller's position and fastening. The design emphasizes quick detachment and ergonomic handling, reducing physical strain and enhancing safety during overhead maintenance tasks.

The problem
Bird repellers installed on power lines require regular maintenance, including removal for cleaning or replacement. Traditional methods often necessitate de-energizing the line, which disrupts power supply, or using complex, heavy machinery that is difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Manual access is risky and physically demanding, especially when dealing with tight bolts and awkward angles. There is a need for a lightweight, manual tool that allows technicians to safely and efficiently install and remove these devices while the line remains energized, minimizing downtime and physical strain.
The solution
The tool integrates three primary mechanical systems to address these challenges:
- Horizontal Positioning: A movable screw rod (4) threaded through a rear plate (2) and front baffle (3) drives a movable slider (5). This slider moves back and forth within a movable groove (7), adjusting the tool’s reach horizontally.
- Vertical Lifting and Tightening: An operating rod (16) with a rotary handle (30) uses a bevel gear transmission (14, 17) to convert rotation into vertical movement. When positioned below, rotating the handle lifts the tool; when positioned above, it engages a gearbox (20) to drive two driving sleeves (22) that simultaneously tighten or loosen the two mounting bolts of the repeller.
- Quick Connection: A butt joint plug board (11) and fixed insert piece (12) create a detachable interface. The tool can be quickly attached to or detached from the repeller, allowing the technician to move between positions without fully disassembling the tool.

Who it is for
- Power Utility Companies: Teams responsible for maintaining overhead distribution lines who need efficient, manual solutions for accessory upkeep.
- Line Maintenance Contractors: Specialized firms performing scheduled inspections and repairs on energized infrastructure.
- Safety Equipment Suppliers: Distributors offering niche tools for high-risk electrical environments.
- Industrial Hardware Brands: Manufacturers looking to expand their portfolio into specialized utility maintenance equipment.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Main Body Mounting Plate | Central frame holding all components. |
| 4, 5 | Movable Screw & Slider | Adjusts horizontal position via threading. |
| 16, 30 | Operating Rod & Handle | User interface for lifting and tightening. |
| 14, 17 | Bevel Gears | Transmit rotation from handle to vertical/horizontal axes. |
| 20, 22 | Gearbox & Driving Sleeves | Engage with repeller bolts for simultaneous tightening. |
| 11, 12 | Plug Board & Insert | Quick-detach connection to the bird repeller. |
| 27, 28 | Mounting Frame & Bracket | Provides grip and stability for the operator. |
Operating Steps
- Positioning: Grip the hand bracket (28) and align the tool with the bird repeller. Use the movable screw (4) to adjust the horizontal distance if needed.
- Attachment: Lift the tool so the butt joint plug board (11) connects to the fixed insert piece (12) on the repeller. The connecting clamp ring (13) secures the link.
- Lifting: Rotate the handle (30) to engage the bevel gears (14, 17), lifting the repeller slightly to relieve tension on its bolts.
- Tightening/Loosening: Move the operating rod (16) up to engage the driving sleeves (22) with the repeller’s bolts. Rotate the handle to tighten or loosen both bolts simultaneously via the internal gear train.
- Detachment: Lower the tool to separate the plug board from the insert, then reposition for the next task.

Applications
Overhead Distribution Lines
Technicians use the tool to replace damaged bird repellers on medium-voltage lines without cutting power, ensuring continuous service delivery.
Substation Insulators
Maintenance crews apply the tool to clean or swap repellers mounted on substation insulator strings, where space is limited and precision is required.
Rural Power Networks
Field workers in remote areas benefit from the tool’s portability and manual operation, which does not require external power sources or heavy vehicles.
Industrial Plant Wiring
Electrical teams maintain bird deterrents on factory overhead cables, using the tool to minimize downtime during production shifts.
Where it is less suitable
- High-Voltage Transmission Towers: The tool is designed for distribution-level equipment; larger towers may require robotic or crane-assisted maintenance due to scale and height.
- Non-Standard Bolt Patterns: It assumes specific bolt configurations common in standard bird repellers; custom hardware may need adapter modifications.
- Confined Indoor Spaces: The length of the operating rod and handle makes it cumbersome in tight indoor switchgear cabinets compared to open-air line work.
Frequently asked questions
How does the tool lift the repeller?
The tool uses a bevel gear system connected to the rotary handle. When the handle is turned, the gears translate this rotation into vertical movement, allowing the operator to lift the repeller off its mounting bolts without direct contact.
Can it tighten and loosen bolts at the same time?
Yes. The rotary sleeve structure contains two driving sleeves connected by a central gear train. When engaged, turning the handle rotates both sleeves simultaneously, tightening or loosening the two bolts on the repeller in one motion.
Is the tool insulated?
The patent describes a mechanical structure but does not specify insulation materials. For US markets, tools used near live lines must meet OSHA and IEEE insulation standards. We recommend using fiberglass-reinforced components or insulated coatings depending on the voltage class.
How do I attach it to the bird repeller?
It uses a quick-detach interface consisting of a butt joint plug board and a fixed insert piece. The plug board slides into the insert, and a connecting clamp ring secures the connection, allowing for rapid attachment and removal.
What materials are used in the prototype?
Prototypes typically use machined steel for gears and aluminum for the body to test weight and strength. Final production may use die-cast aluminum and heat-treated steel for better durability and corrosion resistance.
Can the tool be customized for different bolt sizes?
Yes. The driving sleeves and plug board dimensions can be modified to fit various bird repeller models. The screw slider also allows for some horizontal adjustment to accommodate different mounting positions.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is currently in force in China but has no US or international counterparts. Therefore, this specific design does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the US. However, you should conduct a freedom-to-operate search to ensure no other US patents cover similar live-line maintenance tools.
