Patent CN118353116B
Updated November 2, 2026Retractable Game Controller Charging Station with Cord Management
Standard charging docks leave cables exposed, where they can be snagged, twisted, or yanked out of the controller's port. This design integrates a spring-loaded reel inside the base. When not in use, the cable winds back neatly. When needed, the user pulls the cable to the desired length; an internal locking rod holds it in place. If the cable is pulled beyond the safe limit, a mechanical sensor engages a deceleration brake, stopping the spool before the connector is damaged. The waterproof plate protects the electronics from spills.

The problem
Game controllers need frequent charging, but standard docks often leave long, loose cables draped across desks or shelves. These cables are prone to tangling, getting caught by feet or hands, and being accidentally yanked. When a user pulls the controller away while it is still plugged in, the stress transfers directly to the small USB-C or proprietary port on the controller, risking broken pins or a loose connection. Furthermore, without a way to secure the cable at a specific length, the cord can slip back into the dock prematurely or remain extended when not needed, creating clutter. Existing solutions lack a simple mechanical way to both adjust the working length and protect the connector from sudden, excessive force.
The solution
- The core component is a waterproof plate (1) acting as the base, which houses the electrical connections and supports the mechanical assemblies.
- A placement disc (2) sits on top of the plate, holding a rotating rod (3). Attached to this rod is a sleeve (4) around which the data line (5) is wound.
- A clockwork spring connects the rotating rod to the placement disc, providing the torque to rewind the cable automatically when the lock is disengaged.
- An adjustment device allows the user to pull the cable out to a specific distance and hold it there. It consists of a stabilizing base (71), plate (72), and a sliding rod (73) that locks into a groove (78) on the cable sleeve.
- A protection device monitors the cable’s movement. It includes a turntable (87) with a convex block (88) that interacts with the cable path.
- If the cable is pulled too hard or at a bad angle, the convex block triggers a deceleration device. This involves a brake frame (93) and spring-loaded plates that physically stop the rotating rod from spinning further, preventing the connector from being ripped out.

Who it is for
- Gaming accessory brands looking to differentiate their charging stations with built-in cable management rather than just passive docking.
- Console modding communities who require clean setups where wires do not interfere with controllers during play.
- Retail display manufacturers needing durable, tangle-free charging solutions for demo units in stores.
- Esports team suppliers who value equipment longevity and want to reduce wear on expensive controller ports.
How it works
The main parts
| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Waterproof Plate | Base housing protecting internal contacts. |
| 2, 3 | Placement Disc & Rod | Rotates to wind/unwind the cable. |
| 4 | Sleeve | Holds the wound data line. |
| 5 | Data Line | Connects the controller to power. |
| 71-78 | Adjustment Device | Locks the cable at a chosen length. |
| 81-810 | Protection Device | Detects excessive pull via bumps and disks. |
| 91-911 | Deceleration Device | Brakes the rotation to stop over-extension. |
Operating steps
- Extend the cable: Pull the data line (5) outward. The rotating rod (3) spins against the tension of the clockwork spring.
- Lock the position: The adjustment device engages. The user manipulates the slide plate (77) to allow the stabilizing rod (73) to drop into the limiting groove (78) on the sleeve (4). This prevents the spring from rewinding the cable.
- Charge: Connect the interface (6) to the controller. The cable remains fixed at the adjusted length.
- Retract: To store, release the lock. The stabilizing rod (73) moves away from the groove (78). The clockwork spring rotates the rod (3), winding the cable (5) back onto the sleeve (4).
- Safety Trigger: If the cable is yanked violently, the convex block (88) pushes against the contact rod (810), activating the deceleration spring (97) and brake plates to halt the spool immediately.

Applications
Home gaming setups
Players keep consoles on shelves where cables can easily drape and trip hazards occur. This dock keeps the wire hidden until needed, maintaining a tidy entertainment center.
Esports tournaments
During competitive events, controllers are swapped rapidly. A retractable charger ensures the next player gets a clean, untangled cable instantly, reducing downtime between matches.
Retail demo units
Store displays often suffer from worn-out ports due to customers pulling cords. The over-pull protection stops the mechanism before damage occurs, extending the life of the demo hardware.
Mobile gaming stations
For setups using tablets or phones as secondary screens, the adjustable length allows the user to position the controller comfortably without straining the connection point.
Where it is less suitable
- Wireless-only workflows: Users who exclusively use Bluetooth controllers do not benefit from the physical cable management features.
- Fixed-position industrial kiosks: In environments where the controller never leaves the dock, a simple static charging pin is cheaper and sufficient.
- Multi-controller hubs: This design focuses on single-cable retraction; complex multi-port synchronization requires different engineering.
Frequently asked questions
How does the cable stay out?
When you pull the cable, a stabilizing rod drops into a groove on the sleeve. This mechanically locks the rotating rod, so the spring cannot pull the cable back in until you release the lock.
What happens if I pull the cable too hard?
The device has a protection sensor. If the cable is yanked beyond its safe limit, a convex block triggers a deceleration brake. This stops the spool from rotating further, preventing the connector from being ripped out of your controller.
Is it compatible with all controllers?
The patent describes a generic interface mount. In production, the end of the data line can be fitted with USB-C, Micro-USB, or specific connectors for Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo devices.
Does it work without electricity?
Yes, the retraction is purely mechanical, driven by a clockwork spring. You need power only to charge the controller, but the cable management functions independently of the electrical connection.
Can the cable be replaced?
The design integrates the cable into a sleeve. Replacement typically requires accessing the internal spool. Durability is prioritized through the over-pull protection to minimize breakage.
Is it waterproof?
The base plate is described as a “waterproof plate,” designed to protect the internal mounting points and electrical contacts from minor spills or moisture, though it is not a fully sealed underwater device.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent is active in China but has no US counterpart. Therefore, this specific design is not restricted by this patent in the US. However, always check for other existing US patents on retractable cords before mass production.
