Nail-Holding Hammer with Fold-Out Drivers

Starting a nail usually means holding it between your fingers and hoping. This hammer has a T-shaped slot on top of the head that holds the nail, so you set it with the first blow and keep your fingers clear. A flat screwdriver, a star-type driver and a small blade fold out of a full-length groove in the handle - one tool for small household jobs.

  • China utility model - lapsed
  • No filings outside China
  • Hand tools
  • Simple forged head, molded handle
Nail-Holding Hammer with Fold-Out Drivers - patent drawing

📌

Holds the nail

A T-slot on top of the head grips the nail, so the first blow sets it without your fingers.

🪛

Drivers in the handle

Flat and star-type driver bits and a small blade fold out of a groove that runs the length of the handle.

🔺

Wedge peen

A wedge-shaped end, formed in one piece with the head, for jobs that need a narrower striking face.

✋

Grip and protection

Anti-slip handle texture; optional rubber pad on the wedge and a cover over the nail slot.

The problem

A hammer is one of the most common household tools, and its weak point is the start of every job: you hold the nail between finger and thumb for the first few taps. A missed blow lands on your fingers. A basic hammer is also only a hammer - for the screw next to the nail, you go and find a screwdriver.

The solution

The patent adds three simple features to an ordinary hammer:

  1. A T-shaped slot (4) on the top face of the head (2). The nail is laid in the slot with its point sticking out past the end, so the hammer itself holds it for the first blow.
  2. A wedge-shaped peen (3), formed in one piece with the head, on the opposite end.
  3. A groove that runs the full length of the handle (1), with a pivot pin at the far end carrying a flat screwdriver bit (5), a star (Phillips-type) screwdriver bit (6) and a blade (7). Each is shorter than the groove, so all three fold away inside the handle.

Patent figure 1 - handle (1), head (2), wedge peen (3), and the flat driver (5), star driver (6) and blade (7) folded out at the end of the handle.

Who it is for

  • Tool brands and importers looking for a differentiated household hammer or a gift-set item.
  • Home-improvement and hardware retailers selling “first toolkit” and apartment tool products.
  • Promotional and kit suppliers - moving-day kits, car kits, dorm kits.

How it works

The main parts

Patent figure 2 - the head (2) seen from above, with the wedge peen (3) and the T-shaped nail slot (4).
No.PartWhat it does
1HandleHas a groove along its full length to store the tools; anti-slip texture (claim 2).
2HeadStriking face.
3Wedge peenWedge-shaped end, one piece with the head; can carry a rubber pad (claim 4).
4T-slotOn the top face of the head; holds the nail. Can have a cover against dust (claim 3).
5Flat screwdriver bitFolds out of the handle groove.
6Star screwdriver bitCross/star-type driver; folds out of the groove.
7BladeSmall cutting blade; folds out of the groove.

Starting a nail without holding it

  1. Lay the nail in the T-slot (4) on top of the head - the head of the nail sits in the cross-bar of the T, the shank lies in the long slot, and the point sticks out past the end of the head.
  2. Press the point against the wall or board where it should go.
  3. Push or tap so the nail is set in the surface - your fingers never hold the nail.
  4. Turn the hammer and drive the nail home with the striking face as usual.

Using the fold-out tools

  1. Swing the flat driver (5), star driver (6) or blade (7) out of the handle groove on its pivot.
  2. Use the handle as the grip.
  3. Fold the tool back into the groove when finished.

The patent also lists LED lights on the handle as an option (claim 5); a plain version without electronics is equally possible.

Applications

Home and apartment toolkits

Hanging pictures, assembling flat-pack furniture, tightening loose screws - one tool covers the common jobs.

Gift and starter tool sets

The nail-holding slot is easy to show on packaging and in a short video, which suits gift and first-home sets.

Craft, hobby and DIY projects

Small nails and tacks that are hard to hold by hand: picture frames, birdhouses, trim.

Car, boat and RV kits

A compact hammer that also replaces two screwdrivers and a knife in a small emergency kit.

Promotional products

Logo on the handle or head for hardware stores, real-estate agents and builders.

Where it is less suitable

  • Framing and heavy carpentry - professionals use heavier framing hammers and nail guns.
  • Fine screws and precision work - fold-out bits are a convenience, not a replacement for a full driver set.

Frequently asked questions

How does the hammer hold the nail?

A T-shaped slot on the top face of the head holds the nail with its point sticking out. You press the point to the surface and set it with the hammer, so your fingers do not hold the nail.

Which nails fit?

The patent does not give sizes. The slot is sized for the common nail gauges of the target market during design; a magnet can be added to hold the nail more firmly.

What tools fold out of the handle?

The patent describes a flat screwdriver bit, a star (cross) screwdriver bit and a small blade on one pivot. The selection can be changed - for example Phillips, Torx or hex bits, and no blade.

Is the handle weaker because of the groove?

The handle section and material are chosen so the grooved handle carries normal hammer loads; this is checked on prototypes.

Does it need batteries?

No. The patent lists LED lights on the handle as an option only; the standard version has no electronics.

What weights are possible?

Light household and hobby weights are the natural fit. Heavy framing hammers are a different product.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict anyone. Other multi-tool hammer designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
