Stretch-to-Fit Toy Remote with Drone Storage

Toy remote controls are made for one hand size - cramped for adults, too wide for kids. Here the two joystick handles slide in and out on toothed rails, so the controller fits any hand. A spring clamp on top holds a phone for camera view and lifts off when not needed. And the center of the controller is a storage box with a clear lid, shaped to hold the mini drone itself.

The problem

Mini drones and small RC toys are sold to both children and adults, but their remote controls come in one fixed size. The toy and its controller also travel separately, and small drones are easily lost or crushed in a bag.

The solution

The patent makes the controller adjustable and turns it into the toy’s case:

  1. The body (1) has a left rail (11) and a right rail (12), each with a toothed rack (111, 121).
  2. The left handle (2) and right handle (3), each with its control stick (4), slide on the rails. A gear on each handle (21, 31) meshes with the rack for fine, even adjustment.
  3. A phone clamp (5) - a base (51), a sliding jaw (52) and a spring (53) - holds a phone. A plug (512) on the base fits a socket (13) in the body, so the clamp comes off when not used.
  4. The body has a storage compartment (14) with locating blocks (141) shaped to the toy, under a hinged lid (15) with a buckle (151) and a clear, faceted window (152).
Stretch-to-Fit Toy Remote with Drone Storage - Patent drawing - controller open
Patent figure 5 - body (1), handles (2, 3) with sticks (4) on the rails (11, 12), phone clamp (51, 52) raised, lid (15) open and the drone stored in the compartment (14).

Who it is for

  • RC toy and mini-drone brands that want a controller for family use.
  • Toy retailers and online sellers looking for a gift-ready drone set.
  • STEM and educational toy companies selling drones to schools and clubs.

How it works

The main parts

Stretch-to-Fit Toy Remote with Drone Storage - Patent drawing - exploded view
Patent figure 3 - exploded view: handles (2, 3) with gears (21, 31), sticks (4), rails (11, 12), compartment (14) with locating blocks (141), lid (15) and phone clamp (51, 52, 53, 511, 512).
No.PartWhat it does
1BodyCenter of the controller; carries rails, compartment and socket.
11, 12Left and right railsThe handles slide on them.
111, 121RacksToothed strips on the rails.
2, 3Left and right handlesSlide in and out to set the width.
21, 31GearsOn the handles; mesh with the racks.
4Control sticksJoysticks on each handle.
5Phone clampBase (51) with slide slot (511), sliding jaw (52), spring (53), plug (512).
13SocketTakes the clamp’s plug.
14Storage compartmentHolds the toy; locating blocks (141) fit its shape.
15LidHinged, with buckle (151) and clear faceted window (152).

Setting it up

Stretch-to-Fit Toy Remote with Drone Storage - Patent drawing - body and racks
Patent figure 4 - the body (1) with its toothed racks (111, 121).
  1. Pull the handles out until they fit your hands; the gears and racks keep them moving evenly.
  2. Plug in the phone clamp (5), pull the jaw open against the spring and set the phone in it.
  3. Open the lid, take out the drone and fly.
  4. Afterwards, put the drone back in the compartment, clip the lid and slide the handles in.

Applications

Mini drones and quadcopters

A family-friendly controller that doubles as the drone’s case.

RC cars and boats

Adjustable controllers for small RC vehicles.

Gift and starter sets

An all-in-one box: controller, toy and storage.

STEM classrooms

One controller size that fits students and teachers.

Game controllers

The slide-out handle idea also suits phone gamepads.

Where it is less suitable

  • Hobby-grade RC - advanced pilots use programmable transmitters with more channels.
  • Large drones - the storage idea only works for mini toys.

Frequently asked questions

How does the width adjustment work?

Each handle slides on a rail. A gear on the handle meshes with a toothed rack on the rail, so the handles move smoothly and stay where you set them.

Will it work with our drone or RC toy?

The housing is designed around a standard radio module, which we match to your toy’s receiver and protocol.

What is the clamp on top for?

It holds a phone for a camera view or app control. It plugs into a socket and can be removed.

Can the drone really be stored inside?

Yes - the center is a compartment with locating blocks shaped to the toy and a clear lid with a buckle. The blocks are designed for your toy.

What certifications are needed in the US?

FCC authorization for the radio, and toy-safety testing (ASTM F963, CPSIA) for a children’s toy. We plan both into the project.

Rechargeable or batteries?

Either - AA batteries or a built-in rechargeable battery.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict anyone. Other controller designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
