LED Flameless Candle with an Outside Flame Shade and Wax Dish Top

Most LED candles hide the light behind the wax: you see a glowing body with a dim spot on top, which reads as 'fake' from across a room. In this design the flame is a separate part that stands above the candle. A small flame-shaped shade made of two leaf-shaped halves passes up through a hole in the top of the body, which is formed as a hollow dish like a candle that has been burning for an hour. LEDs held at an angle in slots at the bottom of the shade shine up into a hollow tip, where a wick is printed or engraved on the inside wall, so the light looks like it rises from a real wick.

LED Flameless Candle with an Outside Flame Shade and Wax Dish Top - patent drawing

🕯️

Flame outside the body

The flame shade stands above the candle top, so the light is seen from the side, not through wax.

🥣

Burnt-in dish top

The top of the shell is a hollow dish, the shape a pillar candle takes after burning a while.

💡

Angled LED slots

Two or more LEDs sit in tilted slots at the base of the shade and cross their light in the tip.

🧵

Printed wick inside

A wick is printed or engraved on the inner wall of the hollow tip to complete the illusion.

The problem

Flameless candles are used where open flames are not allowed - restaurants, hotels, churches, dorms, rental homes - and in homes with children and pets. The weak point is realism. According to the patent, existing LED candles do not imitate a flame convincingly: the bulb sits inside or behind the wax, so the glow is diffused and the flame shape is lost when the candle is viewed from a distance.

The solution

  1. A shell (1) - in real paraffin, plastic, glass or metal - holds a base (2) with the battery or rechargeable power module, a support column (3) and a circuit board (4).
  2. A flame-shaped shade (5) is mounted on top of the support column and passes up through a hole (11) in the top of the shell, so it stands outside the body.
  3. The top of the shell is shaped as a dish, like a candle that has burned down around its wick.
  4. The shade is made of two shells (51) with leaf-shaped tops and half-round bottoms, enclosing a hollow tip (52).
  5. LED slots (53) at the bottom of the shade hold the LED module (6). With two or more slots, they are tilted toward each other so the beams cross inside the tip. With a single slot, it is stepped (531-533) to take LED modules of different sizes.
  6. A wick is printed or engraved on the inside wall of the hollow tip.

Patent figure 1 - the flame-shaped shade (51, 52) with the LED module (6) in its stepped slot (531).

Who it is for

  • Home decor and candle brands adding a premium flameless line whose flame reads as real in product photos and on the shelf.
  • Hospitality suppliers selling table candles to restaurants, hotels and event venues where fire codes ban open flames.
  • Church and memorial suppliers providing votive and pillar candles for long, unattended burning.
  • Seasonal and wedding decor sellers on Amazon and in craft chains, where the look of the flame drives reviews.

How it works

The main parts

LED Flameless Candle with an Outside Flame Shade and Wax Dish Top - Patent drawing - shade in a second LED layout
Patent figure 2 - the shade with an LED mounted lower in the stepped slot (55).
No.PartWhat it does
1ShellCandle body; dished top with a hole (11).
2BaseHolds the battery or rechargeable power module.
3Support columnCarries the flame shade up through the hole.
4Circuit boardDrives the LEDs; can add a timer, remote or dimming.
5Flame-shaped shadeTwo leaf-topped halves (51) around a hollow tip (52).
53LED slotsTilted pairs, or one stepped slot for different LED sizes.
6LED moduleTwo or more LEDs lighting the tip from below.

Using it

  1. Load the battery into the base, or charge the rechargeable version.
  2. Switch on - by the switch on the base, or by remote or timer if the board includes them.
  3. The LEDs light the tip from below; the crossed beams and printed wick give the shape of a flame above the dished top.
  4. Place it anywhere a real candle would go - on a table, in a lantern or in a window.

Applications

Restaurant and hotel tables

Venues that cannot use open flames get a candle whose flame is visible from across the room, not just a glowing wax body.

Weddings and events

Planners set out dozens of candles on tables and aisles; a realistic flame matters in photos.

Churches and memorials

Votive racks and memorial displays run for hours without supervision or wax cleanup.

Homes with children and pets

Parents and pet owners keep the candle look without the burn and tipping risk.

Window and holiday displays

With a timer on the circuit board, candles light up each evening in windows and storefronts.

Where it is less suitable

  • Scented-candle buyers - there is no melting wax, so no fragrance throw unless a scent insert is added.
  • Outdoor use in rain - a battery candle with an open hole in the top needs sealing for wet locations.
  • Very small tealights - the separate shade and support column need more height than a tealight offers.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the flame look more real than on other LED candles?

The flame shade stands above the candle body rather than glowing through the wax, so its shape is visible from the side. The dished top, crossed LED beams and a wick printed inside the tip complete the effect.

Is the body real wax?

The patent lists paraffin, plastic, glass or metal for the shell, and its preferred example is paraffin. Real wax over a plastic core is the most common choice for home decor; venues often prefer all-plastic for durability.

Does the flame flicker?

The patent says the circuit board can carry different functions, such as timing, remote control and brightness control. A flicker pattern is programmed into the LED driver and tuned on samples.

How long do the batteries last?

Battery life depends on the LED current, flicker pattern and battery type, so it is measured on prototypes. Timers extend real-world life because the candle only runs a set number of hours each day.

Can one shade take different LEDs?

Yes. In the single-slot version, the slot has several steps so LED modules of different sizes can be fitted, which helps when one shade design is used across several candle sizes.

Can you make sets for restaurants and events?

Yes. We can supply matching sizes in bulk cases, with a shared remote or timer setting so a whole room lights at once.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Flameless candles may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
