Ear-Shaped Mask Strap Guard with Tension Adjuster

Comfort for anyone who wears an ear-loop mask for hours. A soft guard shaped to the outer ear hooks over the ear; the mask's elastic loop runs in a groove on its back, so the pull is spread along the guard instead of pressing on one line. A tiny elastic cylinder with a tapered hole clips into the guard and sets how tight the loop is.

👂

Shaped to the ear

The front follows the outline of the outer ear, so it sits naturally and stays on.

〰️

Spreads the pull

The mask loop runs in a groove behind the guard, spreading the force more evenly.

🎚️

Adjustable tension

A small elastic cylinder with a tapered hole grips the loop and sets its length.

🧩

Two parts, use together or apart

The adjuster clips into a recess in the guard but can also be used on its own.

The problem

Ear-loop face masks are held on by two elastic loops that pull on the back of the ears. The loop length is fixed, so the tension cannot be changed. After a few hours - for healthcare workers, cleaners, food workers or anyone who wears a mask all day - the loops leave marks and the ears become sore.

The solution

The patent adds two small parts to any ear-loop mask:

  1. An ear guard (1) of silicone, elastomer or plastic. Its front follows the outline of the outer ear, so it hooks around the ear.
  2. On the back of the guard, a strap groove (3) runs the full length. The mask loop sits in this groove, so its pull is spread along the guard and the loop cannot slip off.
  3. A tension adjuster (2) - a small elastic cylinder with a tapered hole (5) through its center - grips the loop. Sliding it along the loop shortens or lengthens it.
  4. A recess (4) on the back of the guard holds the adjuster. The groove passes through the recess, so loop, adjuster and guard work as one unit.

Patent figure 4 - a mask with an ear guard (1) on each side: the loop runs in the groove (3), the adjuster (2) sits in the recess (4).

Who it is for

  • PPE and healthcare-supply brands selling mask accessories.
  • Mask manufacturers wanting a comfort add-on or bundle.
  • Amazon and pharmacy sellers in the face-mask accessory category.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Ear guardSilicone, elastomer or plastic; front shaped to the outer ear.
2Tension adjusterSmall elastic cylinder; can be used with the guard or on its own.
3Strap grooveRuns the full length of the back of the guard; the mask loop sits in it.
4RecessOn the back of the guard; holds the adjuster. The groove passes through it.
5Tapered holeThrough the center of the adjuster; grips the mask loop.

Patent figure 1 - front of the ear guard (1), with the ends of the strap groove (3).

Patent figure 2 - back of the guard: strap groove (3) and recess (4) for the adjuster.

Fitting it to a mask

  1. Thread the mask loop through the tapered hole (5) of the adjuster (2).
  2. Slide the adjuster along the loop to set the length: a shorter loop for a tighter fit, a longer one for less pressure.
  3. Press the loop into the groove (3) on the back of the ear guard and seat the adjuster in its recess (4).
  4. Hook the guard over the ear. The pull of the loop is now spread along the guard instead of the back of the ear.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Patent figure 3 - the adjuster (2): an elastic cylinder with a tapered hole (5).

Why the tapered hole works

The hole is narrow at one end and wider at the other. The elastic material grips the loop firmly in the narrow part, so the setting holds, but the adjuster can still be slid along by hand when you want to change it.

Applications

Healthcare and dental offices

Staff who wear ear-loop masks for whole shifts.

Food processing and food service

Masks are worn for hours in kitchens, bakeries and packing lines.

Cleaning, janitorial and manufacturing work

Dust masks and disposable masks during long tasks.

Travel and daily wear

Air travel, public transport and air-pollution days.

People with glasses or hearing aids

A guard spreads the loop away from the area behind the ear that glasses arms and hearing aids also use.

Where it is less suitable

  • Head-strap respirators (such as N95s with straps around the head) - they do not use ear loops.
  • Masks with very short or very weak loops - the adjuster needs some loop length to work.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with any ear-loop mask?

It works with most disposable and cloth masks that have elastic ear loops. The adjuster hole is matched to round or flat loops during design.

How does it make the mask more comfortable?

The loop runs in a groove behind the guard, so the pull is spread along the guard instead of one line on the back of the ear, and the adjuster lets you loosen or tighten the loop.

Can the adjuster be used without the guard?

Yes. The patent describes the adjuster as a part that can be taken off and used on its own to shorten a loop.

Is it reusable?

Silicone and TPE guards can be washed with soap and water and reused.

Is there a children’s size?

Yes, a smaller size can be made. Products for children must meet US children’s product rules.

Does it work with glasses?

It moves the loop pressure onto the guard; comfort with glasses depends on the guard shape and is checked in wear tests.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2018, so it does not restrict anyone. Other ear-saver designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
