2-in-1 Parent & Child Umbrella

One umbrella, two canopies. A smaller umbrella slides through the hollow shaft of a full-size umbrella, so its printed or 3D-shaped canopy sits on top as a playful layer that can spin all the way around. When the rain sets in, pull it out, screw it onto the handle - and the child has an umbrella of their own.

☂️

Two umbrellas in one

Carry one umbrella; split it into a full-size umbrella for the adult and a small one for the child.

🎨

A canopy with character

The top canopy can be a printed or 3D-shaped design - animals, cartoons, team or brand graphics.

🔄

Spins all the way round

The small umbrella can rotate 360° around the main shaft and slide up and down, so the top layer can be turned to show its design.

🔩

Simple screw-and-spring lock

A spring catch holds the small shaft in place; a threaded handle lets it come out and become a separate umbrella.

The problem

Families going out in uncertain weather face a familiar choice: carry two umbrellas, or share one and have the child stand in the drip line. Kids’ umbrellas are also the ones most often forgotten at home.

Meanwhile, most umbrellas are plain, single-canopy products. Special designs - double canopies, odd shapes - usually just add printed graphics and do little to make the umbrella fun or useful in a new way.

The solution

This design builds a second, smaller umbrella into a full-size umbrella:

  1. The main umbrella has a hollow shaft, its own top, runner, ribs and canopy.
  2. A smaller umbrella - with its own top, runner, ribs and canopy - has a slimmer shaft that slides inside the main shaft, so the small canopy sits above the main canopy.
  3. The small umbrella can rotate a full 360° around the main shaft and move up and down; a spring catch locks it in position.
  4. The shared handle is threaded. Unscrew it, pull the small umbrella out, screw the handle onto the small shaft - and it is a complete separate umbrella.
  5. In the patent, the main canopy carries a flat printed pattern and the top canopy is a three-dimensional shape with animal or cartoon designs.
2-in-1 Parent & Child Umbrella - Patent Fig. 2 - frames of the two umbrellas nested together
Patent figure 2 - the two frames nested: small umbrella top (21), runner (22) and ribs (23) above the main umbrella's top (11), runner (12) and ribs (13); small shaft (20) inside the main shaft (10); handle (15).

Who it is for

  • Umbrella and rainwear brands looking for a headline product that is easy to show in a photo or video.
  • Kids’ and family brands, theme parks, zoos and museums - the top canopy is a natural place for characters and mascots.
  • Promotional and licensed products - sports teams, events and brands can put a 3D logo shape on top.

How it works

The main parts

2-in-1 Parent & Child Umbrella - Patent Fig. 1 - the umbrella open with the small canopy on top
Patent figure 1 - open: main umbrella (1) with its canopy (14) and ribs (13); small umbrella (2) with its patterned canopy (24) and top (21) layered above; handle (15).
No.PartWhat it does
1Main umbrellaFull-size umbrella with a hollow shaft.
10Main shaft (hollow)Carries the main umbrella and guides the small shaft inside it.
11 / 12Main top / runnerTop notch and sliding runner of the main umbrella.
13Main rib assemblyRibs (13a) hinged to the top and stretchers (13b) hinged to the runner.
14Main canopyFabric of the main umbrella, typically with a flat print.
2Small umbrellaNested umbrella whose canopy sits above the main canopy.
20Small shaftSlides inside the main shaft.
21 / 22Small top / runnerTop and runner of the small umbrella.
23Small rib assemblySmall ribs (23a) and stretchers (23b) - the patent allows 0 to 30 stretchers of straight, curved or bent shapes for 3D canopy shapes.
24Small canopyThe top layer - printed, or three-dimensional.
15Handle assemblyShared handle; threaded so it can move to the small shaft.

Locking, rotating and lifting

2-in-1 Parent & Child Umbrella - Patent Fig. 3 - section through the handle with spring catch and threads
Patent figure 3 - handle: outer handle (30), inner handle (31), grip (32), spring catch (33), spring (34), small-shaft thread (35), handle thread (36), push button (37).
  1. Nested. The small shaft (20) runs through the main shaft (10). Its bottom thread (35) is screwed into the handle thread (36).
  2. Position. A spring catch (33) fixed to the small shaft, backed by a spring (34), clicks into catch points on the main shaft. Pushing the handle presses the push button (37) and spring, letting the small umbrella move up or down and lock in a new position.
  3. Rotate. The small umbrella can turn 360° around the main shaft, so the top layer can be turned to show its design.

Becoming two umbrellas

  1. Unscrew the handle from the small-shaft thread.
  2. Pull the small umbrella out of the main shaft.
  3. Screw the handle onto the small shaft - the small umbrella is now a complete umbrella of its own.
  4. After use, slide it back into the main shaft and reassemble.
2-in-1 Parent & Child Umbrella - Patent Fig. 4 - alternative handle with upper and lower parts
Patent figure 4 - a second version: the handle splits into an upper (46) and lower (47) part joined by threaded sleeves and posts (416, 417), so each umbrella can keep a handle.

In the second version (claim 1 of the patent), the main shaft ends in a fitting with an outside thread and the small shaft in a fitting with an inside thread, and the handle itself is split into an upper and a lower handle that screw together - so each umbrella has a handle when they are separated.

Applications

Family outings and school runs

One umbrella in the car or bag covers parent and child. When it rains, the child gets their own umbrella in seconds; on the way home, it goes back in.

Theme parks, zoos, aquariums and museums

Gift shops sell umbrellas on rainy days. A top canopy shaped like the park’s mascot or an animal is a souvenir and a rain umbrella in one.

Licensed characters and kids’ brands

The 3D top layer is ideal for cartoon, movie and toy characters - a product that photographs well for online listings and social media.

Sports teams, schools and events

Team colors on the main canopy and a 3D mascot, ball or helmet shape on top make a standout fan or school item.

Corporate promotions

Brands can put a logo shape on the top canopy - a giveaway that people actually keep and use.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very windy conditions - a layered canopy catches more wind; a wind-vented design is recommended for exposed areas.
  • Compact travel umbrellas - the nested design suits straight (stick) umbrellas better than multi-fold pocket umbrellas.

Frequently asked questions

How do the two umbrellas come apart?

Unscrew the handle, pull the small umbrella out of the hollow main shaft, and screw a handle onto it. In the split-handle version, each umbrella keeps part of the handle, so there is nothing to swap.

Does the main umbrella still work on its own?

Yes. With the small umbrella removed, the main umbrella opens and closes like a normal umbrella.

Why does the top canopy rotate?

The small umbrella can turn 360° around the main shaft and slide up and down, so its design can be turned to face the front or adjusted in height.

Can the top canopy have a 3D shape?

Yes. The patent describes stretchers of different lengths and shapes - straight, curved or bent - so the small canopy can form ears, heads or other 3D shapes.

Is it good in strong wind?

Any layered canopy catches more wind than a single one. For windy markets we recommend a fiberglass frame and a vented main canopy.

What size is the kids’ umbrella?

We size it for children during design, balancing coverage when detached with how it looks on top of the main umbrella.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and was abandoned in 2018, so it does not restrict anyone. Other umbrella designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
