The problem

Travelers often need separate items for neck support, eye coverage, and cooling relief. Carrying multiple accessories takes up space and adds weight. Standard neck pillows provide support but lack integrated features for light blocking or temperature regulation. Users seeking privacy or relief from fatigue must manage loose eye masks and additional cooling pads separately.

The solution

  1. A cap (1) is attached to a collar-style pillow (2) using a zipper (5). The cap can be folded into the pillow for storage.
  2. An adjustment rope (3) runs along the edge of the cap, allowing the wearer to tighten or loosen the fit.
  3. An eye mask (4) is attached to the inner side of the cap using Velcro. It consists of a frosted PVC outer layer and an inner fill of polymer cooling gel.
  4. The eye mask can be positioned over the eyes for light blocking or moved to the back of the cap (via an adhesive portion 6) to act as a cooling pad for the head.
  5. Inside the pillow (2), a ring of massage beads (7) is embedded in the filling material.

What the claims cover, in plain language

Claim 1 defines a cap pillow comprising a medicated cap (1), a medicated pillow (2), an adjustment rope (3), an eyeshield (4), and a slide fastener (5). The cap is connected to the collar-type pillow via the fastener. The cap edge has an adjustable rope. The eyeshield is bonded to the inner edge of the cap body using Velcro.

Claim 2 specifies that the outside of the eyeshield is frosted PVC material, and the inside is filled with macromolecule cooling gel.

Claim 3 adds an adhesive portion (6) on the medial posterior side of the cap body, allowing the eyeshield to be connected there via Velcro.

Claim 4 states that a circle of massage beads (7) is set in the filler inside the pillow.

This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.

What this means for US production

This patent was filed in China and has lapsed, so it no longer restricts anyone in China either. The public record shows no US or other foreign counterpart.

Two points to settle early:

  • Other patents may exist. Travel accessories and ergonomic pillows are competitive fields. A design citing this one exists (USD978486S1 by Annette Wise), indicating ongoing interest in similar aesthetics. A freedom-to-operate (FTO) review is recommended to ensure no active US utility or design patents cover the specific integration of caps and neck pillows with cooling elements.
  • Material Safety. The use of cooling gels and plastics requires verification against US consumer product safety standards for skin contact and potential ingestion risks.

Customization and manufacturing

What can be customized

AreaOptions
FabricCotton, polyester blends, microfiber for the cap and pillow exterior.
Gel TypePhase-change materials or standard hydrogels for the eye mask.
Bead MaterialPlastic, silicone, or wooden beads for the massage ring.
ClosureZipper color, length, and pull-tab style.
AttachmentVelcro strength, hook-and-loop vs. button snaps.

Things to plan for (US market)

  • CPSC Regulations: General Consumer Product Safety Commission rules apply. If marketed for children under 12, ASTM F963 toy safety standards regarding small parts (beads) and choking hazards must be strictly followed.
  • Flammability Standards: Textiles used in bedding and apparel-like accessories must meet 16 CFR 1610 (Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles) or relevant home textile flammability standards.
  • Proposition 65: California-specific warnings may be required depending on the chemical composition of the cooling gel and plasticizers in the PVC.

How a project runs

  1. Inquiry - Define target demographic (adult vs. child), material preferences, and quantity.
  2. Design - Select fabrics, gel formulations, and bead types; finalize CAD for cap and pillow shapes.
  3. Prototype - Create samples focusing on zipper durability, Velcro retention, and gel containment.
  4. Testing - Conduct drop tests for beads, wash tests for fabric, and thermal performance checks for the gel.
  5. Production - Cut and sew components, inject mold or fill gel pouches, assemble, and pack.

Quantities & timeline

Tooling for simple sewing-based products is minimal compared to hard goods. Injection molds for the eye mask casing or custom zipper pulls add lead time. Send us your fabric choices, gel specifications, target retail price, and estimated order volume and we will reply with options.

Production notes

Tooling and process

Likely involves cutting dies for fabric patterns and injection molding tools for the rigid or semi-rigid eye mask casing. Sewing stations handle the cap and pillow assembly. Welding or ultrasonic sealing is typically used for the gel pouch to prevent leaks.

Cost drivers

Fabric grade and foam density typically drive material costs. The complexity of the zipper attachment and the quality of the cooling gel formulation are key cost variables. Packaging volume affects shipping rates due to the bulkiness of the pillow.

Prototyping path

Prototyping typically starts with a 3D model check for fit. Produce a welded or bolted frame sample if structural supports are added. Use 3D-printed connectors for initial zipper testing. Perform load tests on seams and Velcro. Finalize tooling and first article inspection.

What we would change before tooling

We would likely reinforce the stress points around the zipper and Velcro attachments. Ensure the gel pouch has sufficient wall thickness to withstand compression. Verify that the massage beads are securely encapsulated to prevent shifting.

Common failure points

Seam strength and edge finish are critical; fraying can occur with repeated washing. Loose joints after repeated load may affect the cap’s alignment. Coating chips at edges of plastic components can expose underlying materials. Stripped screws are not applicable here, but pulled-out Velcro hooks are a common issue.

Frequently asked questions

Can the eye mask be removed?

Yes. The patent describes the eye mask being attached via Velcro (hook-and-loop fasteners). This allows it to be detached for washing or repositioned to the back of the cap.

Is the cooling gel safe for skin?

The patent specifies “polymer cooling gel” inside a frosted PVC layer. For commercial production, the specific gel formulation must be tested for dermatological safety and compliance with US consumer product regulations, especially regarding skin contact and potential leakage.

Do the massage beads move around?

The patent states the beads are “set in the filler” inside the pillow. In production, they are typically encapsulated or sewn into channels to prevent excessive shifting, ensuring consistent pressure points.

Can I wash the whole unit?

The cap and pillow fabric can likely be washed, but the eye mask containing gel should not be submerged unless fully sealed and rated for it. Check care labels based on the final material selection. The zipper mechanism may require gentle handling.

Does it work for people with glasses?

The eye mask sits over the eyes. Depending on the depth of the mask and the rigidity of the PVC, it may interfere with thick frames. Customizing the mask curvature can accommodate different face shapes and eyewear.

Why did the patent lapse?

The patent was terminated in 2018 due to non-payment of annual fees. This means the exclusive rights ended, and the technical solution described is now part of the public domain in China.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed in China and has lapsed, and the public record shows no US counterpart, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, other US patents may exist for similar travel accessories. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
