Compact Torsion-Spring Bike Bell

A minimalist bell that fits between the lights, phone mount and computer on a crowded handlebar. Flick the lever and a common torsion spring snaps the striker back against the dome. The dome floats between rubber parts, so it rings long and clear instead of buzzing.

🔔

Clear, long ring

The dome is held only between rubber parts, so it vibrates freely and rings clean without rattling.

🧩

Standard spring

A common off-the-shelf torsion spring replaces the custom-bent spring of earlier mini bells - cheaper, easier to source.

🤏

Small footprint

Compact enough to fit on handlebars already crowded with lights, mounts, computers and mirrors.

⚡

Quick to fit

A strap and sliding lock block tighten with one screw, and a curved rubber base sits snugly on round bars.

The problem

Today’s bikes are as much for fitness and leisure as for transport, and handlebars fill up quickly: GPS or phone mount, bike computer, lights, mirror, bag. A traditional bell is bulky and often no longer fits.

Mini bells solve the space problem, but many use a custom-bent spring as both lever and return spring. That part has to be specially made, which raises cost and makes the design less flexible.

The solution

This bell keeps the compact layout and changes the spring:

  1. A small lever pivots on the side of a center bracket under the bell dome. One end carries a striker, the other a curved thumb tab.
  2. A standard torsion spring sits on the lever’s pivot. One leg hooks onto a locating catch on the bracket, the other sits under the thumb tab.
  3. Press the tab and release: the spring snaps the striker against the inside rim of the dome. At rest, the catch holds the lever so the striker does not touch the dome.
  4. The dome is clamped only between a rubber washer and a rubber cushion block, so it “floats” and rings long and clear.
  5. A strap wraps around the handlebar; its ends attach to a sliding lock block. One screw through the dome pulls everything tight.

Patent figure 3 - section view: dome (1), lever (2) and striker (7), torsion spring (8) on the pivot (9), rubber cushion block (4) and strap (5) around the handlebar (12).

Who it is for

  • Bike accessory brands and Amazon sellers looking for a stylish mini bell that stands out from generic ring-bells.
  • Bicycle makers and kids’ bike / stroller brands that want a small, quality bell as original equipment - the patent names premium bikes and strollers as target uses.
  • Retailers and bike shops wanting a low-cost, high-margin impulse item in several colors and finishes.

How it works

The main parts

Compact Torsion-Spring Bike Bell - Patent Fig. 1 - the bell from the outside
Patent figure 1 - outside view: dome (1), lever (2) with thumb tab (2-1), striker (7), torsion spring (8), strap (5).
No.PartWhat it does
1Bell domeThe sounding part; struck on its inside rim.
2LeverPivots on the bracket; striker on one end, curved thumb tab (2-1) on the other.
3Center bracketCore frame under the dome; carries the pivot hole (3-2) and a locating catch (3-1).
4Rubber cushion blockSits on the bracket. Its top cap (4-1) supports the dome, a slide rail (4-2) guides the lock block, and a curved base (4-3) rests on the handlebar.
5Locking strapWraps around the handlebar; both ends attach to the lock block.
6ScrewPasses through the dome and pulls dome, bracket and lock block together.
7StrikerWeight on the end of the lever that hits the dome.
8Torsion springStandard spring on the pivot that snaps the lever back.
9Pivot shaftAxle of the lever.
10Locking sliderSlides in the rubber block’s rail as the screw is tightened, pulling the strap tight.
11Rubber washerBetween screw head and dome, so the dome is held only by rubber.

Ringing the bell

Compact Torsion-Spring Bike Bell - Patent Fig. 6 - detail of torsion spring and locating catch
Patent figure 6 - detail: one leg of the torsion spring (8) hooks onto the locating catch (3-1) on the bracket; the spring sits on the pivot (9).
  1. At rest, the locating catch (3-1) bears on the underside of the lever, so the striker (7) is held clear of the dome - no rattling while riding.
  2. Push the thumb tab (2-1). The lever turns on its pivot (9) and winds the torsion spring (8); the striker swings away from the dome.
  3. Release. The spring snaps the lever back and the striker hits the dome’s rim - “ding”.
  4. The catch stops the lever at its rest position again, which also limits its travel.

Because the dome touches only rubber - the washer (11) above and the cushion cap (4-1) below - it vibrates freely, giving a long, clean note.

Mounting on the handlebar

Compact Torsion-Spring Bike Bell - Patent Fig. 4 - bracket, cushion block and strap
Patent figure 4 - center bracket (3), rubber cushion block (4) and strap (5) around the handlebar (12).
  1. Wrap the strap (5) around the handlebar.
  2. The curved rubber base (4-3) sits on top of the bar.
  3. Tighten the screw (6): the locking slider (10) moves up the rail (4-2) inside the rubber block and pulls the strap tight.
Compact Torsion-Spring Bike Bell - Patent Fig. 5 - section A-A of the mount
Patent figure 5 - section A-A: the slider moves vertically in the rail (4-2) of the rubber block as the screw turns.

Applications

Road, gravel and mountain bikes

Riders who care about weight and clean looks often skip the bell - until they need one on a shared path. A small, neat bell that fits next to a computer mount is an easy add-on.

City commuters and e-bikes

Commuters ring their bell often in traffic and on bike lanes. A clear, carrying tone gets attention without a harsh buzz, and the compact size leaves space for lights and a phone mount.

Kids’ bikes and balance bikes

A bell is often a child’s favorite accessory. Bright colors and a light thumb action suit small hands; the smooth, rounded shape has no sharp edges.

Strollers, scooters and wheelchairs

The patent names premium strollers as a target. The same strap mount fits stroller handles, kick scooters and wheelchair push rims, where a small, discreet bell is welcome.

Original equipment for bike brands

Many regions require or expect a bell on new bikes. A distinctive small bell in the brand’s colors is an inexpensive way to make a bike feel more premium.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very loud environments - a larger bell or electronic horn carries further.
  • Oversized or very thick bars - check that the strap length suits the bar diameter, or offer a longer strap.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the sound better than a cheap bell?

The dome is held only between rubber parts, so nothing metal damps it, and the striker is held clear of the dome at rest so it does not rattle. Choosing brass or aluminum and the right dome size further shapes the tone - we tune this during sampling.

Why does a standard torsion spring matter?

Earlier mini bells used a specially bent spring that doubled as the lever. A standard torsion spring is cheaper, easier to source and easy to replace, while the lever can be made from any material.

Which handlebars does it fit?

The strap fits round bars; strap lengths can be matched to common diameters such as 22.2 mm, 25.4 mm and 31.8 mm.

Does it need tools to install?

Only a screwdriver or small hex key for the screw through the top of the dome.

Will it rattle on rough roads?

The locating catch holds the lever at rest so the striker stays off the dome, and the rubber parts absorb vibration.

Can it be made for kids’ bikes?

Yes - in bright colors with a light thumb action, tested to US children’s-product requirements.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2025, so it does not restrict anyone. Other bell designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
