The problem

Car repair moves between the car, the bench and the parts shelf many times. Most mechanic tool boxes are heavy and hard to move, the inside is a jumble, and small parts, fluids and big tools end up mixed together. In a dim garage - or on a night-time job - finding the right part is slow.

The solution

This cabinet is organized around the steps of a repair:

  1. A sheet-metal cabinet sits on four swivel casters, with lifting rings on top for moving it with a hoist or carrying it.
  2. Lights under the shelves and on the inside walls, powered through a power cord, light up the interior.
  3. A pull-out lubricant tray at the top has a movable cross divider to keep oil and grease containers upright and apart.
  4. In the middle, a shelf for parts waiting to be fitted keeps new parts ready and visible.
  5. At the bottom left, two pull-out parts drawers with half-open fronts hold small parts.
  6. At the bottom right, a large tool bay with a screen in its floor takes heavy tools - drips and dirt fall through.
  7. A door with handle and latch, plus a cabinet lock, keeps tools secure.
Rolling Auto-Repair Tool Cabinet with Built-In Lights - Patent Fig. 1 - the cabinet with the door open
Patent figure 1 - door (3) open: lubricant tray (13) with cross divider (14), lights (12), parts-to-fit shelf (11), parts drawers (7), tool bay (15) with screen (8), casters (5), lifting rings (1).

Who it is for

  • Tool-storage and garage-equipment brands looking for a well-organized mobile cabinet with built-in lighting.
  • Independent repair shops, fleet maintenance and tire shops that want job-ready carts in each bay.
  • Home mechanics and car enthusiasts setting up a garage.

Working with the cabinet

Rolling Auto-Repair Tool Cabinet with Built-In Lights - Patent Fig. 2 - the door with handle and latch
Patent figure 2 - door (3) with its handle (16) and latch (4).
  1. Roll it to the car on the four swivel casters, or lift it by the rings (1).
  2. Unlock and open the door (3); plug in the power cord (9) and the lights (12) come on inside.
  3. Fluids sit in the pull-out lubricant tray (13); slide the cross divider (14) to fit the bottles.
  4. New parts for the job wait on the middle shelf (11), visible and ready to fit.
  5. Small parts - bolts, clips, fuses - go in the two drawers (7).
  6. Heavy tools go in the tool bay (15); the screen (8) lets oil drips and dirt fall through.
  7. Close and lock with the door latch (4) and cabinet lock (10).

The parts drawers

Rolling Auto-Repair Tool Cabinet with Built-In Lights - Patent Fig. 3 - a parts drawer in section
Patent figure 3 - parts drawer (7): open at the front so parts can be seen and picked without pulling the drawer all the way out.

Each of the two drawer levels has a half-open front, so small parts are visible and easy to grab, and either level can be pulled out.

Applications

Independent repair shops

One cabinet per bay keeps fluids, parts for the current job and tools organized and rolling with the technician.

Fleet and dealership service

Standard cabinets across many bays make it easy to see what is missing and to lock tools away at the end of a shift.

Tire and quick-lube shops

The lubricant tray and drain screen suit work with oils and fluids; casters make it easy to move between lifts.

Home garages and car enthusiasts

A neat, lit cabinet for weekend projects - parts for a restoration stay organized by job stage.

Motorcycle, marine and small-engine service

The same layout works for bikes, boats, mowers and generators.

Where it is less suitable

  • Mobile service vans - a cabinet on casters needs securing in a vehicle; a van-mounted drawer system may be better.
  • Very large tool collections - full-size roll cabs with many drawers hold more.

Frequently asked questions

How are the lights powered?

The patent uses a power cord at the back of the cabinet. A production version can also use rechargeable LED strips so the cabinet works away from an outlet.

Can the layout be changed?

Yes. Shelf heights, drawer count, tray dividers and the tool-bay size can all be set for your users.

Is the lubricant tray leak-proof?

The tray keeps containers upright and separated; a raised-edge or drip-tray design can be added to contain spills.

What does the screen in the tool bay do?

It lets oil drips and dirt fall through, so heavy tools do not sit in mess.

How much weight can it hold?

Load ratings are set during design and tested for shelves, drawers and casters.

Is it secure?

The door has its own latch and the cabinet has a lock; keyed-alike locks are available for fleets.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2017, so it does not restrict anyone. Other tool-cabinet designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?
