Seat Belt Buckle Illumination Device with Modular Casing

In dimly lit vehicles, finding the seat belt buckle can be difficult. This utility model describes an add-on device that snaps onto existing buckles to provide visual guidance. A casing made of upper and lower covers houses a light-emitting module and a transparent transmission element. When wired to the vehicle's sensor, the lights activate to show the buckle's position. Once the tongue plate is inserted, the system receives a signal to dim or stop the light, confirming the belt is locked. The design allows for easy assembly using adhesive components and interchangeable cover sizes.

The problem

Drivers and passengers often struggle to locate seat belt buckles in poorly lit vehicles, such as at night or in underground parking garages. Without visual cues, users may fumble for the latch, delaying the fastening process. Additionally, there is often uncertainty about whether the belt has been correctly engaged with the buckle. Standard buckles do not provide immediate visual confirmation of their status beyond the mechanical click, which can be hard to distinguish from background noise or vibration.

The solution

The device consists of a sheath body formed by an upper cover and a lower cover. These parts clamp onto the side and opposite side of the standard safety buckle seat. Inside this enclosure sits a light emitting module positioned near the opening where the belt tongue enters. A transmission element, shaped like a frame, directs the light outward so it is visible around the edges of the buckle.

The light module is connected via electric wires to the vehicle’s detection circuit. When the ignition is on or the door is open, the circuit powers the LEDs. When the belt tongue is inserted, the detection circuit sends a signal to the control board within the light module. This signal causes the LEDs to reduce brightness or turn off completely, providing a clear visual cue that the belt is fastened.

Who it is for

  • Automotive Interior Suppliers: Companies looking to add value-added accessories to aftermarket kits or OEM interiors without redesigning the core buckle mechanism.
  • Fleet Management Operators: Businesses managing night-shift transport or logistics fleets where driver safety compliance is critical and visibility aids quick buckling.
  • Aftermarket Retailers: Sellers offering universal-fit interior enhancements that appeal to consumers wanting modernized older vehicle cabins.
  • Vehicle Customization Shops: Installers who specialize in lighting upgrades and need plug-and-play modules that integrate with existing vehicle sensors.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
10Sheath BodyEncloses the electronics; formed by upper and lower covers.
101Upper CoverMounts on one side of the buckle; includes connecting portions.
102Lower CoverMounts on the opposite side; mates with the upper cover.
11Light Emitting ModuleContains the control board and multiple light-emitting units (LEDs).
12Transmission ElementFrame-shaped part that guides light out through the opening.
13Electric WiresConnect the module to the vehicle’s detection circuit.
14Protection CapCovers the lower cover/buckle interface; adds structural rigidity.
15Adhesive ComponentsSecure the covers to the buckle and each other.
2Safety Buckle SeatThe existing car component the device attaches to.
20Detection CircuitVehicle sensor that triggers the light based on belt status.

Operating steps

  1. Installation: The upper and lower covers are assembled into a single unit around the buckle seat. Adhesive components ensure a tight fit.
  2. Wiring: Electric wires are connected to the vehicle’s detection circuit, allowing power and data flow.
  3. Activation: In low light, the LEDs illuminate the transmission element, making the buckle edge glow.
  4. Fastening Signal: When the belt tongue inserts, the detection circuit sends a “buckled” signal.
  5. Feedback: The control board adjusts the LEDs to dim or stop, indicating successful engagement.

Applications

Night Driving Assistance

Passengers entering a car at night can instantly see where the buckle is located, reducing distraction and improving speed of entry.

Fleet Safety Compliance

Logistics companies can install these devices to help drivers quickly verify they are belted before starting routes, supporting safety audits.

Aftermarket Upgrades

Owners of older vehicles without built-in ambient lighting can retrofit this module to modernize the interior feel and functionality.

Accessibility Aid

Individuals with limited mobility or vision benefits from the high-contrast illumination that clearly marks the interaction point of the seat belt.

Emergency Response Vehicles

First responders working in dark zones benefit from rapid visual confirmation that all occupants are secured before moving the vehicle.

Where it is less suitable

  • Integrated Smart Buckles: Vehicles with factory-installed electronic buckles already displaying status may find redundant hardware unnecessary.
  • Extreme Heat Environments: Plastic casings and adhesives may degrade faster than metal-integrated solutions in very hot climates unless specialized materials are used.
  • Low-Cost Basic Models: For budget-conscious buyers seeking purely functional belts without aesthetic or feedback features, the added cost of electronics may not be justified.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know when the belt is buckled?

The device uses electric wires to connect to the vehicle’s existing detection circuit (part 20). When the seat belt tongue inserts into the buckle, the vehicle’s sensor sends a signal. The control board inside the light module receives this signal and adjusts the LEDs—either dimming them or turning them off—to confirm the lock.

Is it compatible with all cars?

It is designed to be sheathed on standard safety buckle seats. However, because buckle geometries vary between manufacturers (e.g., TRW, Autoliv, Denso), you must select a casing size that matches your specific vehicle’s buckle. Custom molds can be created for unique shapes.

Does it require a separate battery?

No. The patent describes connecting the light emitting module via wires to the detection circuit within the safety buckle seat, which implies it draws power from the vehicle’s electrical system. This ensures consistent operation without maintenance.

Can I change the light color?

Yes. The light emitting module consists of multiple light-emitting components on a control board. During customization, you can specify different LED colors (white, amber, red) or even RGB capabilities if the controller supports it.

Will it affect the seat belt’s safety rating?

The device is an external add-on that clamps onto the buckle housing. It does not alter the internal locking mechanism or the webbing path. However, any modification to a safety-critical component should be validated to ensure it does not interfere with the buckle’s ability to latch or release under load.

Is the installation difficult?

The design focuses on ease of assembly. The upper and lower covers clamp together, and adhesive components secure the device to the buckle. Wiring involves connecting to the detection circuit terminals, which may require professional installation depending on the vehicle’s dashboard trim access.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has expired, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, automotive safety accessories are subject to strict federal regulations (FMVSS). We recommend a freedom-to-operate check for newer US patents and ensuring the product meets automotive electrical and durability standards before mass production.
