Adjustable-Shelf Tool Cabinet with Window Door

Tools come in every shape, and fixed shelves waste space. In this cabinet both side walls have a ladder of slots, so each shelf slides in at whatever height the tools need and locks with a spring-loaded pin. Hooks hold keys and small items, a clear window in the door shows what is inside, and a magnet keeps the door shut even when it is not locked.

Shelves at any height

Matching slots up both side walls - each shelf slides into whichever pair of slots fits the tools.

📌

Spring-pin lock

A spring-loaded pin under each shelf clicks into the wall so the shelf cannot rock or slide out.

🪝

Hooks for small items

Hooks under a shelf hold keys, tags and small hand tools.

🪟

Window door, magnetic catch

See inside without opening; a magnet holds the door shut when it is not locked.

The problem

A tool cabinet with fixed shelves fits some tools well and wastes space everywhere else: tall tools do not fit, small tools sit in a mostly empty shelf. Shelves that simply rest on supports also rock and can be pulled out by accident. And unless you open the door, you cannot see whether a tool has been returned.

The solution

The patent makes the inside of the cabinet adjustable:

  1. Both side walls of the cabinet body (100) have slots (110) one above the other, in matching pairs left and right.
  2. Each shelf (120) slides into any pair of slots, so the number of shelves and the height of each storage space are chosen to fit the tools.
  3. Under each shelf, a spring-loaded latch pin (130) clicks into a catch hole (131) in the wall, so the shelf is fixed firmly and can still be removed easily.
  4. Hooks (140) on the underside of a shelf hold keys and small items.
  5. The door (200) has a clear window, is hung on hinges and has a lock (the patent mentions an electronic lock as an option), and a magnet (150) keeps it closed when unlocked.

Patent figure 1 - cabinet body (100) with wall slots (110), shelves (120), latch pins (130), hooks (140), magnet (150) and the door (200).

Who it is for

  • Tool storage and garage brands adding a wall cabinet with flexible shelving.
  • Facility and maintenance managers who issue shared tools and keys and want to see what is in place.
  • Workshop, school and lab equipment suppliers furnishing shared workspaces.

Setting up the shelves

Adjustable-Shelf Tool Cabinet with Window Door - Patent drawing - shelf latch detail
Patent figure 2 - detail A: shelf (120) in the wall slots (110), with the spring latch (130) in its catch hole (131).
  1. Lay out the tools to see how much height each group needs.
  2. Slide a shelf (120) into the pair of slots (110) at the right height.
  3. Let the spring latch pin (130) snap into the catch hole (131) - the shelf is now fixed.
  4. Repeat for the other shelves; fit hooks (140) where keys or small tools hang.
  5. To move a shelf, pull the latch pin back, slide the shelf out and refit it elsewhere.

Day-to-day use

  • Glance through the window in the door to check what is there.
  • Close the door - the magnet (150) holds it, even before it is locked.
  • Lock it when tools need to be secure.

Applications

Garages and home workshops

A wall cabinet that adapts as the tool collection changes.

Facility and building maintenance

Shared tools and keys in one visible, lockable cabinet.

Schools, makerspaces and labs

Teachers can see at a glance whether tools have been returned.

Retail and rental counters

Store small equipment or keys behind a window door.

Vehicles and job-site trailers

Wall-mounted storage that is reconfigured for each job’s tool set (with a secure mounting).

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy tool chests and roll cabinets - this is a light wall or bench cabinet; very heavy tools need drawers on full-extension slides.
  • Fire-rated or safety storage - chemicals and flammables need certified safety cabinets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move a shelf?

Pull back the spring latch pin under the shelf, slide the shelf out of its slots and slide it into another pair at the height you need. The pin clicks into the wall again.

How much weight can a shelf hold?

The patent gives no figures. Shelf load depends on material and size; it is set in design and tested on the prototype.

Does it need power?

No. The patent mentions an electronic lock as one option; a standard key or combination lock works without power.

Why is there a window in the door?

So you can see what is inside - for example whether shared tools have been returned - without opening the cabinet.

Can it be wall-mounted?

Yes, it is designed as a cabinet that can hang on a wall or stand on a bench; mounting hardware is matched to the size and load.

Can we have it in our brand colors and sizes?

Yes - size, color, shelves, hooks and the lock are all customizable.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict anyone. Other cabinet designs may be protected - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
