Folding Two-Panel Grater with Coarse and Fine Sides

Most kitchens own a box grater that takes up a shelf, or several flat graters that clutter a drawer and nick fingers. This grater folds. Two equal panels - one with coarse shredding holes, one with fine holes - are joined by a hinge. Opened flat it gives two grating surfaces side by side; part-open it stands on the counter; folded shut, the blades face each other and the whole tool is as thin as a cutting board. Each panel is a stainless-steel plate set in a plastic or wooden frame, and a slicing blade can be added between the holes.

The problem

Grating is a daily kitchen job - cheese, carrots, potatoes, zucchini, cabbage, ginger - and each food wants a different hole size. That is why kitchens end up with a bulky four-sided box grater or a drawer full of single flat graters. The patent points out the inconvenience directly: the coarse grater, the fine grater and the slicer are separate tools. Flat graters also leave their sharp teeth exposed in the drawer.

The solution

The patent combines them into one folding tool:

  1. Two panels (1, 2) of the same size are joined by a hinge (3).
  2. One panel has large shredding holes (101), the other small shredding holes (201) - the cook picks the size for the food.
  3. A slicing blade can be set between the large holes, or between the small holes, to cut thin slices.
  4. Each panel is a plastic or wooden frame with a stainless-steel plate set in the middle carrying the holes or blade.
  5. The hinge lets either panel fold flat onto the other or open to 180 degrees; the patent says one panel can fold to any angle on the other.

Who it is for

  • Kitchen-tool and housewares brands adding a space-saving grater to a gadget range.
  • Amazon and DTC sellers - a flat-packed, easy-to-ship product with a clear “replaces two graters” story.
  • Small-space and RV/camping brands - kitchen tools that fold flat.
  • Promotional and gift suppliers - a branded kitchen item with a large printable frame.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Panel oneFrame with a stainless plate carrying the large holes (101); optional slicing blade.
2Panel twoSame-size frame with a stainless plate carrying the small holes (201); optional slicing blade.
3HingeJoins the panels so they fold shut or open fully flat.
-FramesPlastic or wood around each stainless plate.

Using it

  1. Open the grater - flat on a board, or part-open as a tent over a bowl.
  2. Pick the panel: coarse for cheese and carrots, fine for hard cheese, citrus or ginger, the blade for slices of cucumber or potato.
  3. Grate downward over the bowl or board.
  4. Rinse and fold shut - the teeth face inward and the grater stores flat.

Ways to stand it

  • Flat - both panels on the board, two surfaces side by side.
  • Tent - panels part-open, standing over a plate or bowl.
  • Hand-held - one panel folded back behind the other as a handle-side support.

Applications

Everyday home cooking

Cheese for pasta, carrots for salads, potatoes for hash browns, zucchini and cabbage - two hole sizes cover most jobs.

Small kitchens and apartments

One flat tool instead of a box grater and two flat graters.

Camping, RV and boat galleys

Folds flat into a cutlery roll or drawer with the blades covered.

Meal-prep and lunch-box kits

Bundled with containers or a cutting board as a prep set.

Gift sets and promotions

A large flat frame that takes a logo or printed pattern well.

Where it is less suitable

  • Very high-volume grating - restaurants grating kilos of cheese use rotary or electric graters.
  • Zesting and microplane work - extra-fine rasps need a different, etched blade; it could be added as a variant.

Frequently asked questions

What does the folding design add?

Two grating surfaces in one tool, and storage: folded shut, the blade faces are covered by each other and the grater lies flat in a drawer.

Which hole sizes are included?

The patent specifies one panel with large shredding holes and one with small holes, plus an optional slicing blade. The exact sizes are chosen in design - for example a coarse cheese size and a fine size for hard cheese or ginger.

Can a zester or other blade be added?

Yes. The patent allows a slicing blade between the holes, and the same frame can carry other blade types as variants.

What materials are used?

The patent describes stainless-steel plates set in plastic or wooden frames. We would use food-safe stainless steel and food-contact plastics or hardwood.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Plastic-frame versions can be designed for the dishwasher; wooden frames are usually hand-wash. We test before making any claim.

Can it be sold with a container?

Yes - a catch tray or a storage container that the grater sits on is a common bundle.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Graters are a crowded category - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
