Width-Adjustable Split Bike Saddle with an Air Cushion Between the Halves

Saddle discomfort is the top complaint of casual riders, and one reason is width: a seat that suits one rider's sit bones is too narrow or too wide for the next. Shared bikes, family bikes and rental fleets make this worse. This saddle is built in two halves that slide apart or together on rails under them, carried by a bracket fixed to the seat post. Between the halves is an air bag with its own valve: when the halves are spread apart, the bag is inflated to fill the gap and cushion the center; when they are pushed together, the air is let out and the bag tucks into the space. The top has vent holes and small bumps near the back, and the seat post has a spring inside to soak up vibration.

↔️

Adjustable width

The two halves slide sideways on a bracket to match the rider's sit-bone width.

🎈

Air bag in the center

An inflatable bag with its own valve fills the gap between the halves.

🌬️

Vents and support bumps

Vent holes let air through and small bumps near the back support the rider.

🌀

Sprung seat post

A spring inside the seat post damps vibration between post and saddle.

The problem

A saddle that is the wrong width presses on soft tissue instead of the sit bones, and one fixed width cannot suit every rider. Casual riders also feel every bump and get hot where they sit. According to the patent, the goal is a saddle whose size adjusts to different body shapes, with damping, ventilation and comfort.

The solution

  1. The saddle body is split into a first half (1) and a second half (2), with a cavity between them holding an air bag (3) fixed to both halves.
  2. A bracket (9) is fixed to the seat post (6) and carries sliders (901). Each half has slide grooves (8) underneath that run on the sliders, so the halves move apart or together.
  3. The air bag has an inflation valve (301). Spread apart, the halves leave a gap that the inflated bag fills; pushed together, the air is let out and the bag folds into the cavity.
  4. The top has vent holes (4) and bumps (5) near the back, each surrounded by vents; according to the patent, the bumps support the rider and give a light massage, and the vents let air circulate.
  5. A plastic cushion layer is laid over the top for resilience and weather resistance.
  6. The seat post is a sprung post with a damping spring (7) inside.

Who it is for

  • Bicycle accessory brands selling comfort saddles to commuters and leisure riders.
  • Bike-share and rental fleet suppliers whose bikes are ridden by people of all sizes.
  • E-bike and cruiser makers looking for a comfort seat that fits a wide range of riders.
  • Exercise bike brands whose home machines are shared by family members.

Setting it up

  1. Slide the halves apart or together to the rider’s sit-bone width.
  2. Inflate the bag through the valve to fill the center gap, or let air out when the halves are closed.
  3. Lock the halves in place on the bracket (lock design set in development).
  4. Ride - the sprung post and air bag take the edge off bumps.

Applications

Commuter and city bikes

Riders who sit upright on short rides want comfort more than light weight.

Shared and rental bikes

One saddle can be set wider or narrower for each rider at the start of a rental.

E-bikes and cruisers

Heavier riders and longer seated rides benefit from adjustable width and center cushioning.

Family bikes and exercise bikes

Parents and teenagers sharing one bike or indoor trainer can each set the width.

Where it is less suitable

  • Road racing and mountain biking - performance riders want light, fixed saddles with narrow noses.
  • Unattended public fleets without locks - the width adjustment needs a tamper-resistant lock in that setting.
  • Very low price points - two halves, a bag and a slide mechanism cost more than a one-piece saddle.

Frequently asked questions

How is the width changed?

The two halves run on sliders on a bracket fixed to the seat post. Slide them apart for a wider seat or together for a narrower one, then lock them in place.

What does the air bag do?

It fills the gap between the halves. When they are spread apart, it is inflated through its valve to cushion the center; when they are closed, the air is let out and the bag folds into the cavity.

Will the halves move while riding?

The patent shows the slide but not a lock. A positive lock - a lever, pin or screw - is part of our design work and is tested under load.

Does it fit any bike?

A version with standard saddle rails fits normal seat-post clamps; the patent’s own version mounts on a sprung seat post. Both can be offered.

What are the bumps on top for?

The patent places small bumps among the vent holes at the back to support the rider and add a light massage effect, while the vents let air through.

Is it waterproof?

The top cushion layer is described as weather resistant. A waterproof cover and sealed valve can be specified for bikes parked outdoors.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Adjustable saddles may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
