Patent CN206630067U
Updated October 23, 2026Full-Face Bike Helmet with Magnetic Detachable Chin Bar
Full-face BMX and trail helmets are usually molded in one piece: crack the chin bar in a crash and the whole helmet is scrap, and the helmet is bulky to store or carry. In this design the chin bar is a separate part. At each side, a connector on the chin bar slides into a matching connector in the shell; magnets in both pull it home and a ring-and-groove latch holds it in place. The visor on top adjusts in angle, and the chin bar itself is made in two halves joined by a screw.
- China utility model - in force in China until Mar 2027 at most
- No filings outside China
- Cycling helmets
- EPS liner, PC shell, magnetic connectors

🧲
Magnetic chin-bar connectors
Magnets in the shell and the chin bar pull the two together at each side.
🔐
Slide-in latch
A split ring and a grooved block lock the connectors so the magnets are not the only hold.
🔧
Replaceable chin bar
A damaged chin bar can be swapped instead of replacing the whole helmet.
🧢
Adjustable visor
The visor on the front of the shell can be set at different angles.

The problem
Full-face helmets protect the jaw in BMX, dirt-jump and downhill riding, but most are molded as one piece. The patent names two problems: when the chin bar breaks, the rider has to buy a whole new helmet; and when the helmet is not in use, the fixed chin bar makes it bulky to store and carry. Riders who climb on trail bikes also often prefer an open face on the way up.
The solution
The patent separates the chin bar and adds a secure, quick connection:
- The helmet has a shell (10), a visor (20) whose angle can be adjusted, a chin bar (30) and a connection (60) on each side.
- A first connector (40) in the shell holds a magnet inside a split retaining ring (46).
- A second connector (50) at each end of the chin bar has a clamping block (52) with a groove (53) around it and a second magnet behind it.
- To fit the chin bar, each second connector slides down into its first connector. The magnets pull them together and the ring snaps into the groove, while a bar and slot on the side and a raised key line the parts up.
- The chin bar is made in two halves (31) joined by a screw.

Who it is for
- Cycling helmet brands adding a convertible full-face model to a BMX, dirt-jump or trail line.
- Youth BMX and bike-park brands - a helmet with a replaceable chin bar keeps costs down for growing riders.
- E-bike and urban mobility brands looking for a convertible helmet for faster riding.
- Sporting-goods retailers with private-label helmet programs.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Shell | Vented helmet shell carrying the first connectors. |
| 20 | Visor | Peak on the front of the shell; angle adjustable. |
| 30, 31 | Chin bar | Two halves joined by a screw; second connectors at the ends. |
| 40 | First connector | In the shell; holds a magnet inside the split retaining ring (46). |
| 50 | Second connector | On the chin bar; clamping block (52) with groove (53), slot (51), key (55) and latch bar (56). |
| 60 | Connection | The side joint formed by the two connectors. |
Fitting the chin bar

- Line up each end of the chin bar with the connectors in the shell.
- Slide it down - the clamping block enters the stop slot, the key and latch bar guide it.
- The magnets pull the parts together and the split ring clicks into the groove around the block.
- Check both sides are seated before riding.
Removing it
Pull the chin bar ends up out of the connectors against the magnets and the ring; the shell is now an open-face helmet that is smaller to carry.

Applications
BMX racing and dirt jumping
A full-face helmet whose chin bar can be replaced after a crash.
Trail and enduro riding
Chin bar off for climbs, on for descents (subject to the helmet’s certification in each configuration).
Bike parks and youth programs
Rental and club helmets where damaged chin bars are swapped instead of whole helmets.
E-bike commuting
Extra face protection for faster riding, removable for city use.
Where it is less suitable
- Motorcycle and motocross - motor sports need DOT-certified helmets built to much higher impact standards.
- Riders wanting the lightest road helmet - the connectors and chin bar add weight compared with an open road helmet.
Frequently asked questions
Is the chin bar held only by magnets?
No. According to the patent, the magnets pull the connectors together, and a split ring snapping into a groove on the clamping block, plus a latch bar and key, lock them mechanically.
Can a broken chin bar be replaced?
Yes - that is one of the patent’s aims. The chin bar comes off at the two side connectors, so it can be sold as a spare part.
Is it a motocross helmet?
The Chinese title means “off-road helmet”, but the patent describes BMX and off-road cycling. It is designed as a bicycle helmet; motor sports need DOT-certified helmets.
What certification does it need in the US?
All bicycle helmets must meet CPSC 16 CFR Part 1203. If the chin bar is marketed as protective, it should also be tested, for example to ASTM F1952 for downhill helmets. The helmet must pass in each configuration it is sold for.
Which sizes can be made?
Youth and adult sizes are possible; each shell size needs its own molds and certification tests.
Does the visor adjust?
Yes - the patent describes a visor whose angle can be adjusted on the shell.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until March 2027 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Convertible helmets are an active US patent area - see Patent & Production - so a freedom-to-operate check is essential before tooling.
