What the claims cover, in plain language
Claim 1 - an off-road helmet with a shell, a visor movably mounted on the upper front so its angle can be adjusted, and a chin bar mounted on the lower front by a connection so it can be freely removed. The connection has a first connector in the shell with a first magnet and a second connector on the chin bar end with a second magnet; the magnets attract each other.
Claims 2-5 - the first connector has a support and a retaining piece with a slot; the second connector has a clamping block with a groove, and the two lock by engaging; details of the arc-shaped block, the stop slot and the pocket holding the magnet and the arc-shaped retaining piece. Claims 6-9 - a slot on the second connector that receives the block, an engaging edge with a key, a latch bar and bar slot, and a two-piece chin bar joined by a screw.
This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.
What this means for US production
This patent was filed only in China. It is still in force in China, so making or selling this design in China would need the owner’s permission while it lasts (at most until 2027-03-07). It has no US or other foreign counterpart and does not restrict the design outside China.
Before production, keep in mind:
- Other patents may exist. Several established helmet brands sell convertible full-face helmets with removable chin bars, and this is an active US patent area. A thorough freedom-to-operate (FTO) search by a US patent attorney is essential before tooling.
- Production location. Because the Chinese patent is in force (until March 2027 at most), plan where the helmet is made with your patent counsel.
Customization and manufacturing
What can be customized
| Area | Options |
|---|---|
| Shell and liner | In-mold PC shell with EPS liner; sizes from youth to adult - to be confirmed in design |
| Chin bar | Material and construction, ventilation, colors |
| Connectors | Magnet strength, latch design, release method |
| Visor | Fixed-angle or adjustable, breakaway screws |
| Fit system | Rotary dial, pads, strap and buckle (magnetic buckles available) |
| Branding | Graphics, colors, packaging |
Things to plan for (US market)
- CPSC bicycle helmet standard - every bicycle helmet sold in the US must meet the mandatory federal standard 16 CFR Part 1203, be tested, carry a certificate and the required labels. A convertible helmet must pass in each configuration it is sold for, and the chin bar should only be claimed as protective if it has been tested for that purpose (for example to ASTM F1952 for downhill helmets).
- Children’s helmets - youth sizes also need CPSIA testing and a Children’s Product Certificate.
- Not for motorcycles - motorcycle helmets need DOT FMVSS 218; do not market this design for motor sports unless built and certified for it.
- Magnet safety - magnets must be fully enclosed; check them against loose-magnet rules.
How a project runs
- Inquiry - riding category, sizes, certifications and quantity.
- Design - shell, liner and chin bar engineering, connector and latch details.
- Prototype - samples for fit, connector strength and pre-tests.
- Pilot run - small batch with CPSC 16 CFR 1203 (and ASTM) testing at an accredited lab.
- Production - volume production, packaging and shipping.
Quantities & timeline
Helmet shells, EPS liners and chin bars need molds for each size, and certification testing must be completed before sale. Send us your riding category, sizes, certification targets, quantity and target price and we will reply with options.
