What the claims cover, in plain language
Claim 1 - a toggle made of an axis and a rotating disc on it, with a return spring between them, a protruding toggle tip at the disc’s edge and two notches or wedge blocks on the disc. A support block beside the disc holds a sliding push rod pressed toward the disc by a second spring. Turned one way by a set angle, the push rod drops into one notch (or behind one wedge); turned the other way, into the other.
Claims 2-4 - the return spring wound on the axis; push rod parallel or perpendicular to the disc; arc-shaped notches. Claim 5 - an alternative toggle with a lever sliding along the axis, pushed by a third spring onto the disc face. Further claims - a folding umbrella stem with upper, middle and lower sections, a sleeve, groove tracks, unlocking block, slip ring, slider and cord, using the toggle to sequence opening and closing.
This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.
What this means for US production
This patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it no longer restricts anyone in China either. It has no US or other foreign counterpart.
Two points to settle early:
- Other patents may exist. Umbrellas with cases, auto-open mechanisms and telescoping shafts have many US patents, from large umbrella brands and individual inventors, so a freedom-to-operate (FTO) review of the sleeve, stem sequence and toggle is advisable before tooling.
- Mechanism tuning. The sequence of pulls and pushes depends on tight tolerances in the groove tracks; it is tuned on working samples before molds are frozen.
Customization and manufacturing
What can be customized
| Area | Options |
|---|---|
| Size | Canopy diameter, closed length of the sleeve |
| Canopy | Pongee or polyester, water-repellent coating, UV-blocking, wind vent |
| Frame | Fiberglass or aluminum ribs, number of ribs |
| Stem and sleeve | Aluminum or steel stem; molded or metal sleeve; drain holes |
| Handle | Rubberized grip, wrist strap, logo cap |
| Branding | Printed canopy, engraved sleeve, gift box |
Things to plan for (US market)
- California Prop 65 - canopy coatings, PVC parts and handle rubbers are screened; PFAS-free water repellents are increasingly requested.
- State PFAS laws - several states restrict intentionally added PFAS in textile treatments; coating choice follows the target states.
- UPF claims - if UV protection is claimed, the fabric is tested to AATCC 183 and labeled to ASTM D6603.
- Country-of-origin labeling - required on the product or packaging under FTC and customs rules.
How a project runs
- Inquiry - canopy size, materials, branding and quantity.
- Design - toggle, groove tracks, stem sections, sleeve and cord path.
- Prototype - working samples for open-close cycle and wind tests.
- Pilot run - cycle durability, water and drop tests, packaging trials.
- Production - stem extrusion and machining, toggle molding, frame and canopy sewing, assembly.
Quantities & timeline
The toggle parts, sleeve, handle and slip ring need small precision injection molds, the stem sections need aluminum extrusion and machining, and the canopy is cut and sewn. Tuning the opening sequence takes the most development time. Send us your canopy size, materials, branding, quantity and target price and we will reply with options.
