Screw-In Bug Zapper Bulb with Color LEDs and a Built-In Music Player

Patios, gazebos and campsites often get a string of party lights, a speaker and a bug zapper - three products, three power sources. This design puts all three into one bulb that screws into a porch light or a hanging lantern socket. The upper body is a double cage of crossed ribs spaced 3 to 5 mm apart, close enough that fingers cannot reach in. A high-voltage grid sits on the inner cage. Ultraviolet LEDs draw mosquitoes in, where they touch the grid. Ordinary LEDs in the same board light the lantern in different colors, and a music player sits in the dome-shaped shade underneath. Each function has its own switch, so the bulb can be a lamp, a speaker, a bug zapper or all three at once.

The problem

Outdoor evenings bring mosquitoes. People hang a bug zapper, add party lights for atmosphere and bring a portable speaker - each with its own power cord or battery, and each taking up space on a patio or in a tent. According to the patent, this design combines mosquito killing, lighting and music in one lantern without chemical repellents, with a cage spacing that keeps fingers away from the high-voltage grid.

The solution

  1. A lamp cap (1) screws into a standard light socket. Below it is the lamp body, made of a top (2) and a bottom plate (3).
  2. Between top and bottom, two layers of guard grids - an outer (11) and an inner (5) - are built from crossed ribs spaced 3-5 mm apart. The gaps let insects fly in and help the LEDs shed heat.
  3. A high-voltage grid (6) is laid on the surface of the inner guard.
  4. A circuit board (4) on the bottom plate carries ultraviolet LEDs and ordinary LEDs.
  5. A dome-shaped shade covers the board from below and holds a music player, wired to the board.
  6. The board has separate switches for the mosquito killer, the light and the music player. The patent also lists options: a sound wave to lure mosquitoes, UV sterilizing LEDs and a small negative-ion emitter.

Who it is for

  • Outdoor lighting brands selling patio, porch and string-light products who want a multifunction bulb.
  • Pest-control product companies adding a zapper that doubles as decorative lighting.
  • Camping and RV accessory sellers whose customers want fewer gadgets at the campsite.
  • Gift and seasonal retailers looking for a summer patio item with a clear three-in-one story.

Using it

  1. Screw the lantern into a porch light, pendant or hanging lantern socket.
  2. Choose the functions - zapper only, light only, music only, or any combination.
  3. Set the color of the lantern light, by remote in the patent’s example.
  4. Clean the grid regularly with the power off.

Applications

Patios and decks

One bulb in an existing porch fixture lights the deck, plays music and catches insects.

Gazebos and pergolas

A hanging lantern socket in a gazebo becomes the center of an evening gathering.

Campsites and RV awnings

A single device replaces a lantern, a speaker and a zapper for campers.

Backyard parties

Color modes and music set the mood while the zapper works in the background.

Garages and workshops

With the music off, the bulb serves as a work light that also catches insects drawn to it.

Where it is less suitable

  • Food preparation areas - zapped insects can scatter; zappers belong away from food and serving tables.
  • Wet locations without protection - the bulb needs a covered socket or a damp-rated housing outdoors.
  • Indoor bedrooms - the snap of the grid and the light make it a poor choice for sleeping areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can the three functions be used separately?

Yes. The patent gives the zapper, the light and the music player their own switches, so the bulb can be only a lamp, only a speaker, only a zapper, or any combination.

Is the high-voltage grid safe to be near?

The grid sits on the inner of two rib cages whose gaps are 3-5 mm, which the patent says keeps fingers out. The final design is tested to UL 1559 before sale.

What socket does it fit?

The patent uses a screw-in lamp cap. For the US we would use an E26 base; a plug-in or rechargeable version is also possible.

How is music played?

The patent places a music player in the shade. For today’s market this is usually a Bluetooth speaker, which adds FCC authorization to the plan.

Can it be used outdoors?

It is meant for patios and campsites, but it needs a covered or damp-rated fixture. A weather-resistant version with sealed electronics can be designed.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and brush the grid. A removable tray under the grid for dead insects can be added in design.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Bug zapper bulbs may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
