Patent CN206856772U
Updated October 23, 2026Stroller Seat with Linked Fold-Away Armrest
Folding a stroller seat usually means two jobs: release the backrest and then fold the armrest bar out of the way. In this seat the backrest, the seat and the U-shaped armrest share one hinge on each side. Pull the release at the top of the backrest and push it forward: part way down, a pin inside the hinge unlocks the armrest, the backrest presses it down, and the three parts end up stacked flat. A spring lifts the armrest again when the seat is opened.

Splat! What let you down?
🔁
One-motion fold
Pushing the backrest forward unlocks the armrest and folds it down - no separate armrest release.
🔒
Armrest stays locked in use
A pin in the hinge keeps the armrest fixed whenever the backrest is in a riding position.
🪑
Recline with the same release
The release at the top of the backrest also sets the recline angle through a gear and tooth slots.
↩️
Spring-return armrest
When the seat is opened again a spring lifts the armrest back into place by itself.

The problem
Stroller seats have three moving parts: the backrest, the seat and the bumper bar or armrest in front of the child. To fold a seat flat for storage, the parent normally releases the recline, then finds a second button to free the armrest and folds it separately - often with a bag on one arm. Every extra button is one more thing to explain on the box and one more step in a crowded parking lot.
The solution
The patent links the armrest to the backrest so that folding the backrest is enough:
- On each side the backrest pivot (11), the seat pivot (21) and the armrest pivot (31) sit on one shared axle.
- A gear (41) between the backrest and seat pivots locks the backrest at a chosen recline angle. A release (64) on the upper backrest tube moves the gear out of the lock through a cable.
- A lock pin (52) bridges the seat pivot and the armrest pivot, so the armrest is fixed while the child rides.
- When the backrest is pushed far enough forward, an unlock pin (51) rides up a ramp in an arc groove on the backrest pivot and pushes the lock pin fully into the armrest pivot. The armrest is now free.
- The backrest keeps moving, presses the armrest down, and backrest, armrest and seat finish stacked flat.

Who it is for
- Stroller and travel-system brands looking for a seat unit that folds with fewer steps.
- Juvenile-products OEMs that make seat modules for several stroller frames.
- Retailers and private-label programs that need a clear “one-hand fold” style story backed by a real mechanism.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Backrest | Inverted-U tube frame with cross tubes 13 and 14. |
| 2 | Seat | Seat board (or two seat tubes with fabric). |
| 3 | Armrest | U-shaped bar in front of the child. |
| 11 | Backrest pivot | Has the arc groove (111) with a flat part (112) and a ramp (113), plus tooth slots (114). |
| 21 | Seat pivot | Sits between the other two pivots; has tooth slots (215) and a through-hole for the pins. |
| 31 | Armrest pivot | Holds the lock hole (311) and the return spring (72). |
| 41 | Gear | Engages both sets of tooth slots to lock the recline angle. |
| 51 | Unlock pin | Follows the arc groove; pushes the lock pin when it reaches the ramp. |
| 52 | Lock pin | Bridges seat pivot and armrest pivot to hold the armrest. |
| 61, 63 | Rotor and pusher | Turned by the cable; slide the gear out of engagement. |
| 64 | Release | Handle on the upper backrest tube that pulls the cable. |
| 5, 6 | Canopy bar, leg rest | Fold with the seat. |
Reclining
- Operate the release (64) on the backrest - the cable turns the rotor (61) and the pusher (63) moves the gear (41) out of the backrest’s tooth slots.
- Tilt the backrest to the angle you want and let go - the gear drops back into the slots and holds the angle.
During recline the unlock pin stays on the flat part of the groove, so the armrest stays locked.
Folding

- Release and push the backrest forward.
- Part way, the unlock pin reaches the ramp (113) and pushes the lock pin into the armrest pivot - the armrest is unlocked.
- The backrest meets the armrest and presses it down.
- The seat ends up folded flat; the gear engages a deep slot to hold it folded. The canopy bar and leg rest can be folded onto the stack.

Opening
Release the lock and lift the backrest. As soon as the backrest stops pressing on the armrest, the return spring (72) brings the armrest back up, and the pins re-lock it when the backrest is upright.

Applications
Full-size and travel strollers
A seat unit that folds flat before the frame folds, for a smaller package.
Reversible seat modules
Seat units that are lifted off the frame and turned around benefit from a quick, flat fold.
Stroller-and-car-seat travel systems
Where the seat is removed for the car seat, a self-folding armrest saves one step.
Twin and tandem strollers
Two seats to fold means the time saved per seat counts twice.
Where it is less suitable
- Ultra-compact umbrella strollers - many have no rigid armrest or recline gear at all.
- Seats with a removable bumper bar - if the bar simply unclips, the linkage adds cost without much benefit.
Frequently asked questions
How many hands does folding take?
The patent describes one release handle on the backrest and a single forward push of the backrest; the armrest unlocks and folds by itself. Whether it can be done one-handed depends on the final handle position and spring forces, which we tune on prototypes.
Does the armrest come loose while the child is riding?
According to the patent, the lock pin keeps the armrest fixed in every riding and recline position; it unlocks only when the backrest is pushed forward past the recline range. This is confirmed in prototype and lab testing.
How many recline positions are there?
The patent does not fix a number. The gear and tooth slots set the positions, and the count and angles are chosen in design.
Can the seat fit our existing stroller frame?
Yes - the seat is a module with its own pivots. We design the interface (fixed, reversible or click-in) to your frame drawings.
Is the folded seat completely flat?
The patent shows backrest, armrest and seat stacked closely, with the canopy bar and leg rest folded onto the stack. Final thickness depends on tubes, padding and fabric.
What testing is needed in the US?
Strollers must meet 16 CFR 1227 (ASTM F833) and CPSIA requirements, tested at a CPSC-accepted lab, with a Children’s Product Certificate and tracking labels.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patents were filed only in China, so they do not restrict the design in the US. The invention patent CN107117199B is in force in China until May 2037 at most, so making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Stroller mechanisms are heavily patented in the US - see Patent & Production - so a freedom-to-operate check is essential before tooling.
