Updated October 24, 2026Refillable Lipstick Case with Sealed Snap-In Refill Pods
A standard lipstick is thrown away with its metal and plastic case once the bullet is used up, and a handbag ends up holding several full cases to carry several shades. This design separates the two. The reusable part is the twist mechanism - a ribbed base, slotted fork, spiral tube and aluminum sleeve. The consumable part is a pod: lipstick bullet, cup, a small outer cap and a tail cap that snap together and seal. The pod's tail cap hooks onto a cup inside the mechanism. Twisting the base raises the cup to a stop at the very top of the slot, where the pod can be lifted straight out and another shade clicked in.
- China utility model - in force in China until Mar 2027 at most
- No filings outside China
- Lipstick & cosmetic packaging
- Aluminum sleeve, molded plastic mechanism

Splat! What let you down?
♻️
Keep the case
Only the refill pod is replaced; the mechanism and aluminum sleeve are reused.
🔒
Sealed pods
Each refill has its own cap and tail cap, so spare shades travel sealed in a bag.
⤴️
Release at the top
Twisting past the normal travel to a top stop frees the pod; in normal use it stays locked.

Shades on demand
One case can carry whichever shade suits the day.

The problem
Lipstick is one of the most wasteful packaging formats in cosmetics: the bullet is a few grams, but the metal and plastic case around it is discarded each time. The patent points out two problems with ordinary lipsticks: the case can only be thrown away once the lipstick is used up, and people who change shades through the day have to carry several full cases. Refillable lipsticks have since become a strong trend with luxury and “clean beauty” brands, but many refill systems are fiddly or leave the bullet exposed.
The solution
The patent divides the lipstick into a reusable core (100) and a replaceable lipstick assembly (200):
- The fork (10) has a ribbed rotating base (11) and a slotted mounting tube (12). Two longitudinal slots (121) run up the tube, each ending in short side slots; at the top are a first (122) and second (123) short side slot.
- A spiral tube (40) with a helical groove (41) slides over the fork, and an aluminum sleeve (50) goes over the spiral tube. An O-ring (60) on the fork makes the twist smooth.
- A connecting cup (20) inside the fork has two lugs (21) that ride in both the fork slots and the helical groove, so twisting the base moves the cup up and down.
- A first cup (30) sits on the connecting cup through a twist-lock: its locking points (33) enter along a guide groove (23) between L-shaped blocks (22) and turn into a stop.
- The refill pod contains the lipstick bullet (210) in a second cup (220), closed by an outer cap (230) that snaps onto a tail cap (240). Hooks (243) in the tail cap grip ribs (34) on the first cup.
- In daily use the lipstick twists up and down like any other. Twisting until the lugs reach the topmost side slot (123) lifts the first cup and pod clear of the sleeve, where the pod can be removed and a new one fitted.

Who it is for
- Cosmetic brands launching a refillable lipstick line to cut packaging waste and build repeat refill sales.
- Indie and clean-beauty labels that want a refill system without developing a mechanism from scratch.
- Cosmetic packaging suppliers adding a refillable bullet mechanism to their stock catalog for private-label customers.
- Lip-balm and solid-stick makers - the same pod principle suits tinted balms, solid perfumes or concealer sticks.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Fork | Ribbed base (11) and slotted tube (12) with the guide slots. |
| 20 | Connecting cup | Lugs (21) ride in the slots and helix; carries the first cup. |
| 30 | First cup | Twist-locks into the connecting cup; holds the refill pod by its tail cap. |
| 40 | Spiral tube | Helical groove (41) that converts twist into lift. |
| 50 | Aluminum sleeve | Outer case; its top edge retains the spiral tube flange. |
| 60 | O-ring | Smooth, damped rotation. |
| 210, 220 | Bullet and second cup | The lipstick and its holder inside the pod. |
| 230, 240 | Outer cap and tail cap | Snap together to seal the pod. |
Using it
- Daily use - twist the base to raise and lower the lipstick as usual.
- To change shade - keep twisting until the cup reaches the top stop; the pod rises clear of the sleeve.
- Lift the pod out, close it with its cap and put it in the bag.
- Click in another pod by its tail cap and twist back down.
- When a bullet is used up, only the small pod is discarded or recycled.

Applications
Refillable luxury lipstick lines
Premium brands sell heavy metal cases at a higher price and refills at a lower one; the case becomes a keepsake rather than waste.
Clean-beauty and low-waste brands
Refills reduce packaging per purchase, a message that matters to these customers. The sealed pod also keeps the bullet protected when sold on its own.
Multi-shade sets and travel kits
A single case with three or four pods replaces several full lipsticks in a makeup bag or a gift set.
Subscription and refill programs
Brands running replenishment subscriptions can ship slim refill pods by mail at lower weight and cost than full lipsticks.
Hotel, airline and gifting
Personalized or engraved cases with seasonal shades make a durable gift; pods let the recipient keep using the case.
Where it is less suitable
- Very low-cost mass-market lipsticks - the extra parts in the pod add cost that a budget product may not carry.
- Liquid lipsticks and glosses - this is a twist-up bullet mechanism; liquid formats need a different refill system.
Frequently asked questions
How does a customer change the refill?
Twist the base beyond the normal travel until it reaches the top stop. At that point the cup holding the refill pod is free, so the pod lifts straight out; a new pod clicks onto the cup by its tail cap and is twisted back down.
Can the refill come out by accident?
In normal use the lugs stay in the main slots, so the pod is locked. It is only released at the topmost side slot, a position reached deliberately. The click and torque at that point are tuned on samples.
Is the refill pod sealed?
Yes. The pod has its own outer cap that snaps onto its tail cap around the bullet, so spare shades can be carried or sold separately without the bullet being exposed.
Which bullet sizes can be used?
Standard, slim and mini bullets are possible; the fork, cups and sleeve are dimensioned in design for your bullet and the product’s mold.
Can you fill the lipsticks too?
We can supply empty cases and pods for your filler, or arrange filling through a qualified cosmetics filler; the brand remains responsible for the formula and its US registration duties.
Is the case recyclable?
The aluminum sleeve and the plastic mechanism are reused; pods can be made from a single plastic family to make recycling easier. Recyclability claims should follow local programs and the FTC Green Guides.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until March 2027 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Refillable lipstick mechanisms may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
