Updated October 28, 2026Folding Football Goal with Rotary-Head Hinge and Plug-In Base
Portable football goals often rely on many separate poles and complicated instructions. This design reduces setup time by linking the two upright door frames with a single runner assembly. At its center are two identical rotary heads, each carrying a two-layer articulated circle portion and a tangent convex extension part attached to a door frame. A hinged pipe slides through holes in the crossed circle portions, letting the two convex extensions rotate against each other so the frames fold flat. Lock-screws secure the pipe at both ends. The base connects to the gantry through first and second connectors, using a male and female plug fitting that snap together. Net clamps run from the gantry down to the base, hinged at a third connector, keeping the net taut when the goal stands open.

The problem
Setting up a standard football goal takes time, multiple people, and several loose parts that can be misplaced. Portable goals meant for home yards or club practice often solve this by using lightweight pop-up frames, but those lack the rigid structure needed for repeated ball strikes. Goals built from separate tubes require matching each pole to the right connector, which slows down play and frustrates users who just want to start a game. When practice is over, disassembling these frames leaves a pile of parts that take up significant space in a garage or equipment shed.
The solution
This folding football goal addresses those issues through a linked gantry and a tool-free base.
- The gantry (10) consists of two door frames (2) joined at the top by a runner assembly (1).
- The runner assembly uses two identical rotary heads (11), each featuring a two-layer articulated circle portion (111) and a tangent convex extension part (112) connected to one end of a door frame.
- A hinged pipe (12) inserts through the through-holes (113) of the crossed circle portions, allowing the two convex extensions to rotate around each other. Two lock-screws (13) secure the pipe ends.
- The bottom of each door frame hinges to a first connector (3), which plugs into a vertical post (51) of the base (5).
- The base joins two cross bars (52) using a connecting element (55) made of a male plug fitting (551) and a female plug fitting (552) that engage each other directly.
- Net clamps (6) run from second connectors (53) on the base up to third connectors (7) hinged to the door frames, supporting the net.

Who it is for
- Sports equipment brands looking to add a structured, foldable goal to their backyard or training catalog without relying on flimsy pop-up designs.
- Amazon sellers and e-commerce retailers needing a compact product that ships efficiently in a smaller box, reducing freight costs compared to fixed-frame goals.
- Youth football clubs and schools that set up and break down practice areas daily, requiring a frame that folds quickly without loose hardware.
- Wholesalers supplying sporting goods stores seeking a durable, easy-to-display item that customers can understand and assemble without reading lengthy manuals.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Runner assembly | Joins the two door frames at the top hinge point. |
| 2 | Door frames | Form the upright sides and top arch of the gantry. |
| 3 | First connector | Hinges the bottom of the door frame to the vertical post. |
| 5 | Base | Supports the entire structure on the ground. |
| 6 | Net clamp | Holds the net support between the base and the gantry. |
| 7 | Third connector | Hinges the top of the net clamp to the door frame. |
| 11 | Rotary head | Contains the circle portions and convex extension. |
| 12 | Hinged pipe | Passes through the rotary heads to act as the pivot axle. |
| 13 | Lock-screw | Secures the hinged pipe at both ends. |
| 51 | Vertical post | Connects the base to the first connector. |
| 52 | Cross bar | Forms the ground-level width of the base. |
| 551, 552 | Plug fittings | Male and female parts that snap the cross bars together. |
Setup and folding steps
- Join the base: Insert the male plug fitting (551) of one cross bar into the female plug fitting (552) of the other cross bar. Attach the articulated elements (54) to the second connectors (53).
- Attach the gantry: Plug the vertical posts (51) into the first connectors (3) at the bottom of the door frames (2).
- Unfold the frames: Rotate the two door frames outward. The convex extension parts (112) swing around the hinged pipe (12) inside the crossed circle portions (111) until the goal stands upright.
- Secure the net: Swing the net clamps (6) outward from the second connectors (53) to the third connectors (7) on the door frames, creating the depth for the net.
- Fold down: Reverse the steps. The rotary heads allow the door frames to pivot inward flat against the base for storage.

Applications
Backyard practice
Families setting up a goal for children in a residential yard need something that goes up fast and clears away before mowing the lawn. The plug-in base and rotary hinge let one person unfold the frame without searching for missing bolts. When practice ends, the door frames fold flat so the goal fits behind a garden shed or inside a garage.
Club training sessions
Youth coaches often move equipment between different fields or drill stations during a single practice. Carrying a fully assembled goal across grass is difficult, but this design folds down into a compact shape. Staff can load several folded units into a transport cart or vehicle trunk between exercises.
School physical education
Physical education classes have limited transition time between activities. Teachers need equipment that students can help deploy safely. The step-edge design where the plug division diameter is smaller than the post diameter guides the tubes together, reducing pinched fingers and misaligned parts during class setup.
Indoor sports facilities
Multi-purpose gymnasiums frequently switch layouts for basketball, volleyball, and indoor football. Permanent goals block floor space needed for other events. A folding goal with a self-supporting base can be rolled out for a session and stored vertically against a wall afterward, preserving the facility’s usable area.
Where it is less suitable
- Professional regulation matches: Official tournaments require fixed, heavy-duty steel goals anchored into the ground to meet specific dimension and safety standards.
- High-wind outdoor locations: Because the base relies on plug fittings rather than ground stakes or heavy anchors, strong gusts may shift the frame unless additional weights are added in design.
Frequently asked questions
How does the folding mechanism work?
The two door frames connect at the top via a runner assembly containing two identical rotary heads. Each head has a two-layer articulated circle portion and a convex extension part attached to a frame. A hinged pipe slides through the crossed circle portions, acting as an axle so the frames pivot toward each other to fold flat, or swing outward to stand up. Lock-screws hold the pipe in place.
Is the base difficult to assemble?
No. The base uses two cross bars that join in the middle via a connecting element. One bar has a male plug fitting and the other has a female plug fitting; they engage each other directly. Vertical posts then plug into first connectors at the bottom of the door frames using a similar step-edge plug design.
Will the goal tip over when a ball hits it?
The patent describes the structural connections but does not provide specific stability test results. Tip-over resistance depends on the overall weight, base footprint and whether the goal is anchored, all of which are set in design / confirmed on prototypes to meet relevant safety standards.
What materials are used for the frame?
The patent specifies structural shapes like tubes, rotary heads and plug fittings but does not mandate a specific material. Manufacturers typically choose steel, aluminum or heavy-duty plastics depending on the target age group and price point.
Do I need tools to set it up or fold it down?
The primary connections—the plug fittings on the base and the hinge action of the runner assembly—operate without tools once assembled. However, the patent notes that screws are used to join the door frames to the runner assembly and the connectors, meaning initial assembly or maintenance requires basic hand tools.
What size goals can be made with this design?
The patent does not limit the design to one size. Dimensions such as width, height and tube diameter are set in design / confirmed on prototypes to suit anything from toddler practice targets to youth-sized goals.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has no US counterpart, so it does not restrict manufacturing or sales in the United States. However, the patent remains in force in China until at most 2027-05-26 (if annual fees are paid), and other companies hold later US and international publications in the folding goal field. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
