Updated October 25, 2026Bedside Crib Base with Spring-Loaded Telescoping Caster Legs
Bedside cribs sit level with the parents' mattress so a baby can sleep within arm's reach. That only works if the crib is pushed tight against the bed - and the wide feet that keep a crib from tipping over are exactly what stops it getting close. This design lets the feet change length. Each foot at the bottom of the crib's legs is a tube with a fixed wheel at the outer end and a sliding wheel at the bed-side end. The sliding wheel sits on a telescoping tube with a piston inside the foot, guided by an inner and outer tube, with a spring that pushes it back out. Used alone, the feet are long and stable. Slid under the edge of the adult bed, the wheels retract so the crib meets the mattress, and safety straps tie it to the bed.

The problem
A bedside crib needs a wide base so it does not tip when a parent leans on its rail or a child pulls on it. But the same wide base hits the frame of the adult bed and leaves a gap between the two mattresses. According to the patent, the goal is feet that are wide enough to keep the crib from tipping in normal use, yet can shorten so the crib sits tight against the adult bed.
The solution
- The crib’s bed body (1) stands on upright poles (2) with a foot (3) at the bottom of each side.
- Each foot is a foot tube (4) with a fixed wheel (5) at one end and a telescoping wheel (6) at the other.
- The telescoping wheel is mounted on a wheel seat (7) at the end of a telescoping tube (8), whose inner end slides inside the foot tube on a piston (11).
- Inside the foot tube, a telescoping outer tube (9) holds a sliding telescoping inner tube (10), whose other end runs through the piston into the telescoping tube.
- A spring (12) around the inner tube is held between the piston and the outer tube, so it pushes the telescoping wheel back out after it has been pushed in. A stop (13) at the end of the foot tube limits the piston.
- In the bedside position, the crib is pushed against the adult bed (14) with the telescoping wheels retracted and is fastened with safety straps (15).

Who it is for
- Juvenile furniture brands making bedside sleepers and co-sleeper cribs.
- Baby registry and retail private labels looking for a bedside crib with a clear fit-to-bed feature.
- Nursery furniture makers adding a bedside model to crib and bassinet lines.
- Online baby brands whose customers complain about gaps between crib and parents’ bed.
How it works
The main parts

| No. | Part | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 2 | Bed body and poles | The crib and its upright legs. |
| 3, 4 | Foot and foot tube | Base of each side. |
| 5 | Fixed wheel | Outer end of the foot. |
| 6, 7 | Telescoping wheel and seat | Bed-side end; slides in and out. |
| 8 | Telescoping tube | Carries the wheel; slides in the foot tube. |
| 9, 10 | Outer and inner tubes | Guide the slide. |
| 11 | Piston | Slides inside the foot tube. |
| 12 | Spring | Pushes the wheel back out. |
| 15 | Safety straps | Tie the crib to the adult bed. |
Using it
- Standalone - the springs keep the telescoping wheels out, so the base is at full width.
- Bedside - roll the crib to the bed; the bed-side wheels slide in as the crib is pushed in under the bed frame.
- Strap it to the adult bed with the safety straps.
- Move it away - unstrap and roll the crib out; the springs push the wheels back to full width.

Applications
Bedside sleepers
The main use: a crib that sits flush to the parents’ mattress for night feeds.
Night-time and daytime crib
The same crib rolls into the living room by day and back to the bedside at night.
Small bedrooms
Shorter feet on the bed side save floor space where the room is tight.
Hotel and travel cribs
A bedside travel crib can fit different bed frames in hotels and grandparents’ homes.
Where it is less suitable
- Beds with solid bases to the floor - platform beds without space underneath leave nowhere for the feet to slide.
- Older toddlers - bedside sleepers have weight and age limits; larger children move to a full-size crib.
- Uneven floors - the spring-loaded wheels need a reasonably level floor to sit flat.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the legs need to change length?
Wide feet keep the crib from tipping, but they hit the adult bed frame and leave a gap. The telescoping wheels slide in so the crib can sit tight to the parents’ mattress, then spring back out when it is moved away.
What pushes the wheels back out?
A spring inside each foot, held between a piston and a guide tube. Spring force and travel are set in design for the crib’s weight.
Is the crib stable when the wheels are retracted?
In the bedside position the crib is strapped to the adult bed, which the patent shows with safety straps. Stability in both positions is tested to the bedside sleeper standard.
Will it fit our customers’ beds?
It needs space under the adult bed for the feet to slide in. We test samples with common bed frames and can adjust foot height and travel.
Can the crib be used on its own?
Yes. Away from the bed, the feet are at full width. Used free-standing, it is also tested to the bassinet standard.
Do the wheels lock?
The patent shows wheels at both ends of the foot; locking casters can be specified for the standalone position.
Can this design be made and sold in the US?
The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Bedside sleepers may be covered by other US patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
