One-Motion Folding Baby Crib with Linked Frame

Folding a travel crib usually means a sequence of buttons: unlock each top rail, push the center down, then gather the legs. This crib links everything together. The frame is two leg assemblies hinged at the top, each carrying one side of the bed. A slider rides on one leg and is tied by short links to the other leg and to the first top rail; a second pair of links ties the second top rail to its leg. Release the lock and swing the legs together, and both top rails fold down with them - the crib closes in one motion and opens the same way.

Linked folding

Closing the legs drives a slider and links that fold both top rails at the same time.

✋

One movement

No separate rail buttons - release one lock and the whole crib collapses together.

🔒

Locks open

A sliding block drops into a slot in the spreader links to hold the crib open.

📏

Compact when folded

The legs can telescope or come apart, so the folded crib packs short.

The problem

Travel cribs and portable bassinets are bought for one reason: they set up and pack away quickly. In practice, many fold in several steps - each top rail has its own release, the floor or center has to be pushed down, and then the legs gathered - and a parent often does this with a baby in one arm. A step missed means a rail that will not fold or a frame that will not lock. The patent aims at a crib that folds in a single, linked movement.

The solution

The patent ties all the moving parts of the frame together:

  1. The frame is two leg assemblies - a first main support (11) and a second main support (12) - hinged at the top on a main joint (50), forming an A-shape when open.
  2. A first top rail (21) and a second top rail (22) carry the soft bed set (60) between them.
  3. A slider (30) - a sleeve - slides on the first support. A link (23) joins it to the second support, and another link (24) joins it to the first top rail.
  4. Two more links (25, 26) join the second top rail to the second support.
  5. Swinging the second support toward the first pushes the slider along the first support; the slider pulls the first top rail down, and at the same time the second support pulls the second top rail down. Everything folds together.
  6. Spreader links (13, 14) between the legs carry a lock: a sliding block (41) that drops into a slot (42) to hold the crib open.

Patent figure 1 - the crib: soft bed set (60) on top rails (21, 22), supports (11, 12), slider (30) and joint (50).

Who it is for

  • Nursery and baby-gear brands adding a travel crib or bassinet whose fold is simpler to demonstrate than competitors'.
  • Juvenile-products importers building private-label ranges for US and Canadian retailers that need a one-hand-friendly fold story.
  • Hotel, rental and baby-equipment-hire companies whose staff set up and pack cribs many times a day.
  • E-commerce sellers of travel gear, where an easy fold shown in a short video drives sales.

How it works

The main parts

One-Motion Folding Baby Crib with Linked Frame - Patent drawing - frame without bed set
Patent figure 2 - the frame with the bed set removed: links (23-26), slider (30), spreader links (13, 14) and lock parts (41-45).
No.PartWhat it does
11, 12Main supportsThe two leg assemblies; can telescope or come apart for compact storage.
50Main jointTop hinge shared by the supports and top rails.
21, 22Top railsHold the soft bed set; fold down against the legs.
30SliderSleeve on support 11; moved by link 23, moves rail 21 via link 24.
23, 24Crank linksTurn the swing of the legs into the slide, and the slide into the fold of rail 21.
25, 26Rail linksFold rail 22 together with support 12.
13, 14Spreader linksBrace the legs open; carry the lock.
41, 42Lock block and slotHold the frame open until released.
60Bed setSoft fabric bed hung between the rails.
One-Motion Folding Baby Crib with Linked Frame - Patent drawing - lock detail
Patent figure 3 - enlarged lock area: sliding block and slot parts (41-45) on the spreader links (13, 14).

Folding it

  1. Release the lock on the spreader links.
  2. Swing one leg toward the other. The slider moves along the first leg.
  3. Both top rails fold down with the legs, pulled by their links.
  4. Gather the folded frame and, if fitted, telescope or detach the legs.

Opening is the reverse: spread the legs until the lock block snaps into its slot.

One-Motion Folding Baby Crib with Linked Frame - Patent drawing - half folded
Patent figure 5 - half folded: the top rails (21, 22) swing down as the supports (11, 12) close.
One-Motion Folding Baby Crib with Linked Frame - Patent drawing - fully folded
Patent figure 7 - fully folded: legs and rails lie together in one bundle.

Applications

Travel and grandparents’ houses

A crib that a tired parent can fold with one movement at the end of a visit.

Hotels and vacation rentals

Housekeeping staff set up and stow cribs repeatedly; fewer steps mean faster room turnover.

Baby-equipment rental

Rental companies delivering cribs to holiday homes need frames that are quick to explain and hard to fold wrongly.

Small apartments

A bedside crib that can be folded away during the day to free floor space.

Daycare and nurseries

Spare sleeping spaces that come out at nap time and fold flat afterwards.

Where it is less suitable

  • Full-size permanent cribs - this is a portable design; full-size cribs follow different rules and construction.
  • Very heavy use without maintenance - linked folding depends on every pivot; worn joints must be inspected in rental fleets.

Frequently asked questions

What does “linked folding” mean here?

All the folding parts are connected. When you swing one leg toward the other, a slider and four short links make both top rails fold down at the same time. You do not release or fold each rail separately.

How is the crib held open?

Two spreader links brace the legs. One link carries a sliding block that drops into a slot in the other, so the frame cannot fold until the block is pulled back.

Can it be folded with one hand?

The patent’s goal is a single folding movement. Whether the release can be safely operated with one hand depends on the lock design; US crib and play-yard standards limit how easily a frame can be unlocked, so the release is designed to pass those tests.

Is it a bassinet, a play yard or a crib?

The patent shows a portable crib with a soft bed between two top rails. The US version is sized for one product type, which decides the federal safety standard it must meet.

How small does it fold?

The patent says the legs can telescope, fold or come apart to make the folded crib smaller. Exact folded dimensions are set in design.

Can it have wheels or rocking feet?

Yes. Wheels on one pair of legs and optional rocking feet are common additions; they are tested with the frame for stability.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. It is in force in China until March 2027 at most, and making or selling it there needs the owner’s permission. Travel crib and play yard folding mechanisms are heavily patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.

Are you affiliated with the patent owner?

No. IP2M is an independent design and manufacturing service working from the public patent document.
