Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter

A bolt cutter redesigned around the handles. Two side links and meshing gear-shaped ends tie the handles together, so they can swing open as wide as 130-190° - the patent says this gives a real labor-saving effect. Each handle also folds in half with a latch, so a full-size cutter fits in a shorter toolbox or truck box.

  • Forged / stamped steel, no electronics

↔️

Opens 130-190°

Linked handles swing much wider than an ordinary bolt cutter for more leverage on each cut.

⚙️

Meshing handle ends

Gear-tooth (or rounded) ends on the handles stay in contact, so both handles move evenly.

📏

Folds in half

Each handle has a hinge and a spring latch - a long cutter packs into a short box.

🔩

Familiar cutting head

Standard mirror-image jaws, side plates and adjustment bolts - no special blades needed.

The problem

A bolt cutter gets its power from long handles, but on a conventional cutter the handles can only open a limited angle before the jaws are fully open. Long handles are also awkward to carry and store: a 24- or 36-inch cutter does not fit in most toolboxes.

The solution

The patent changes how the handles connect to the cutting head:

  1. The cutting head is conventional - two mirror-image jaws (11, 12) held between side plates (21).
  2. Each handle (51, 52) is pinned to its jaw as usual, but the two handles are also tied together by two side links (61, 62), pinned just below the jaw pivots.
  3. The top ends of the handles are rounded or gear-toothed around the link pivots and stay in contact or in mesh as the handles move.
  4. With this geometry the handles can open to an angle of 130-190°, which the patent describes as giving a better labor-saving effect.
  5. Each handle has a folding joint (52c) and a spring latch (52d, 52e), so the lower half folds up alongside the head for storage.
Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - handles opened wide
Patent figure 6 - the handles opened wide; the linked, toothed handle ends sit just below the cutting head.

Who it is for

  • Tool brands and importers looking for a differentiated bolt cutter for hardware stores and online sales.
  • Contractors, rescue and maintenance crews who carry cutters in vehicles and want them compact.
  • Farm, fencing and security suppliers cutting chain, wire and padlock shackles.

How it works

The main parts

Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - exploded view
Patent figure 1 - exploded view: jaws (11, 12), side plate (21), bolts and nuts (31, 32), handles (51, 52) with toothed ends (511, 521), side links (61, 62).
No.PartWhat it does
11, 12JawsMirror-image cutting heads.
21Side platesHold the jaws together at their middle pivots.
31, 32Bolts and nutsPivot pins for the head.
4Grip patternAnti-slip texture on the head.
51, 52HandlesLong levers; each is pinned to one jaw.
511, 521Handle endsRounded or gear-toothed ends that stay in contact while the handles move.
513BossRaised hook on the outside of each handle end; holds the folded lower half.
61, 62Side linksTwo links, one on each face, joining the two handles just below the jaw pivots.
52a, 52bUpper and lower handle halvesJoined by the folding pivot (52c).
52d, 52eLatch hook and release leverLock the handle straight; press the lever to fold.

Cutting

Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - closed bolt cutter
Patent figure 5 - the cutter closed, handles straight.
  1. Open the handles. Because the handles are linked by the side links (61, 62) and their toothed ends stay in mesh, they swing apart evenly - up to 130-190° according to the claims.
  2. Place the chain, rod or shackle deep in the jaws.
  3. Close the handles. The long handle travel turns into a short, strong closing movement at the jaws.
Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - handles opened flat
Patent figure 7 - handles opened to about 180°.

Folding for storage

Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - the folding joint
Patent figure 3 - folding joint: pivot (52c), latch hook (52d), release lever (52e).
  1. Press the release lever (52e) - the latch hook (52d) lets go of the upper half.
  2. Fold the lower half of each handle outward and up along its pivot (52c).
  3. A rod on the lower half snaps into the hook (513) on the handle end, holding it folded.
Wide-Opening Folding Bolt Cutter - Patent drawing - handles folded
Patent figure 9 - both handles folded up beside the head for storage.

Applications

Construction and rebar work

Cutting wire mesh, light rebar, tie wire and threaded rod on site. The folded cutter fits in a gang box.

Fencing and farms

Chain-link, high-tensile wire and chain - the tool rides in a truck or tractor box.

Property management and locksmith work

Removing abandoned padlocks and chains from gates, lockers and storage units.

Vehicle and emergency kits

A compact folding cutter for fleet vehicles, utility trucks and emergency response kits.

Hardware retail and online sales

“Folds in half” and “opens wider” are easy features to show on a package or product video.

Where it is less suitable

  • Hardened steel (high-security shackles, hardened chain) - beyond what most manual bolt cutters can cut; a cutting wheel is needed.
  • Daily heavy-duty production cutting - a powered rebar cutter is faster.

Frequently asked questions

How much easier is it to cut?

The patent states that the wide opening angle (130-190°) gives a better labor-saving effect, but it gives no figures. Cutting force is measured on prototypes for each size and jaw type.

What can it cut?

That depends on length, jaw steel and heat treatment. Capacity is set during design and printed on the label - typical targets are soft wire, chain, rod and padlock shackles below a stated diameter.

Does the folding joint make the handles weaker?

The joint is designed and tested for the handle loads; the latch locks the halves straight during use. A non-folding version is also possible.

Can the jaws be replaced?

Yes, replaceable jaw sets can be specified, as on many professional bolt cutters.

Why are the handle ends toothed?

The meshing ends keep both handles moving together and support the wide opening. The patent also allows plain rounded ends.

What sizes are possible?

Common bolt-cutter lengths can be made; the link geometry is scaled for each size.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2025, so it does not restrict anyone. Other bolt-cutter designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
