What the claims cover, in plain language
Claim 1 - a bolt cutter with two mirror-image cutting heads held by pressing plates, and two handles, each pinned to one cutting head. The key point is a connecting piece whose two ends are pinned to the upper ends of both handles, at points below the handle-to-head pivots and on or outside the center line of each handle.
Claims 2-7 - the handle ends are arcs (claim 2) or arc-shaped gear teeth (claim 3) centered on the link pivots, which stay in contact or in mesh while the handles turn; track grooves in these arcs receive the ends of the cutting heads.
Claim 8 - two connecting pieces, one on each face of the handles. Claim 9 - the handles open to an angle of 130-190°. Claim 10 - a folding structure in each handle: upper and lower parts on a pivot, a latch with a hook and a release lever, and hooks on the handle ends that hold the folded lower parts.
This is a simplified reading for orientation only. The legal scope is defined by the exact claim wording in the official Chinese document.
What this means for US production
This patent was filed only in China, and it lapsed in 2025 because annual fees were not paid. It no longer restricts anyone - in China or elsewhere.
Before production, keep in mind:
- Other patents may exist. Bolt cutters and folding hand tools are made by large tool companies that hold US patents on jaw designs, compound linkages and folding handles. Use your own styling and have a freedom-to-operate (FTO) search done by a US patent attorney before volume production.
Customization and manufacturing
What can be customized
| Area | Options |
|---|---|
| Length | Common sizes such as 14, 18, 24, 30 or 36 inch - to be confirmed in design |
| Jaws | Center-cut, clipper-cut or shear-cut; replaceable jaw sets |
| Steel & hardness | Jaw steel grade and heat treatment chosen for the target cutting capacity |
| Handles | Tubular steel or aluminum; fold joint on or off |
| Grips | Dual-material TPR, cushioned or plain; brand colors |
| Finish | Powder coat, black oxide or chrome on the head |
| Branding & packaging | Logo on grips and head, blister card, box or display carton |
Things to plan for (US market)
- Rated capacity - state the maximum material and diameter it can cut on the label, and test it.
- Materials - check grip compounds against California Proposition 65; mark the country of origin on the tool.
- Durability - cycle-test the fold latch and link pins.
How a project runs
- Inquiry - lengths, jaw type, cutting capacity and quantity.
- Design - link geometry, jaw profile, latch details.
- Prototype - samples for cutting, opening-angle and latch tests.
- Pilot run - small batch to check heat treatment and finish.
- Production - volume production, packaging and shipping.
Quantities & timeline
Jaws and handles need forging or stamping tooling plus heat treatment; grips need molds. Send us your sizes, jaw type, quantity and target price and we will reply with options.
