Portable Advertising Light Box with Spinning LED Display

Printed light boxes and street signs show one message until someone replaces the poster. This portable box shows any message. Inside, several bars of LEDs are mounted on a motor-driven spinner; as they turn, a controller switches the LEDs so fast that pictures and text seem to float in the box. New content is loaded over a wireless link or a USB port, an optional GPS module records where the box has been, and a pole lets it stand on the ground or be carried.

The problem

Street promotions, shop entrances and event stands rely on posters and printed light boxes. Every new offer means printing and swapping a poster, and a static sign is easy to walk past. Electronic screens solve that but are heavy, fragile and expensive to carry around. The patent’s goal is a portable sign whose content can be changed cheaply and instantly.

The solution

The patent puts a “persistence of vision” display - spinning LEDs - into a portable box:

  1. A portable box (9) has a removable front panel and a pole (11) to carry it or stand it on the ground.
  2. Inside, several LED bars (2), each a row of LEDs (7), sit on a spinner (15, 17) fixed to the shaft of a motor (3).
  3. A controller (4) turns the motor and switches the LEDs in time with the rotation, so the turning bars draw images and text.
  4. A wireless receiver and a memory let content be stored and switched remotely; a USB port charges the box and loads content.
  5. An optional GPS module reports the box’s location to a server, so advertisers can see where a campaign ran.

Spinner versions

The patent shows bars on two or more straight arms, and a fan-blade version with wider supports, so the number of bars and the image resolution can be chosen.

Frequently asked questions

How does it show pictures with only a few LED bars?

The bars spin on a motor, and the controller switches each LED at exactly the right moment in every turn. The eye blends the turning light into a still image - the same principle as “hologram fan” displays.

How is the content changed?

According to the patent, content can be sent through a wireless receiving module and kept in memory, or loaded through a USB port. A phone app is the usual way to do this today.

Can it run on battery?

Yes. The patent includes a power supply with a switch and a USB port for charging. Run time depends on the battery and brightness and is set in design.

What is the GPS for?

The patent describes an optional GPS module that reports where the box is, so advertisers can see where a mobile campaign ran.

Can it be used outdoors?

In shade, evenings and indoors it is very visible. In direct sun LED images lose contrast; we can raise brightness and add a hood.

Is the spinning part safe?

It must be fully enclosed behind a fixed transparent cover. We design the guard and test it before shipment.
