Portable Neck Pillow with Integrated Compression Storage Belt

Standard travel pillows take up as much room in a bag as they save on your neck. This design adds a storage belt directly to the pillow structure. One end of the belt is fixed to the first neck side support, and the belt itself carries a first connector. A second connector is placed on the end of that same support body. To pack the pillow, you wrap the belt around the second neck side support, across the back of the nape support, and around the first neck side support again. When the first and second connectors mate, the belt yields to the compression, squeezing all three support bodies together. The result is a tightly bound, reduced-volume bundle that slips into a carry-on or daypack without needing a separate stuff sack. An optional third connector on the second neck side support closes the front opening during use or packing, and the inner surfaces of the side supports are angled to fit the natural tilt of the neck.

The problem

Travelers who rely on neck pillows during flights, train rides, or long drives face a recurring packing issue. Once the journey is over, the pillow remains fully expanded. It occupies a large portion of a carry-on bag, backpack, or tote, leaving little room for other essentials. Separate compression sacks can solve this, but they are easily lost, add another item to manage, and often require two hands to stuff the pillow inside. Furthermore, many U-shaped pillows leave a wide gap at the front, allowing the head to drop forward, while flat inner surfaces press awkwardly against the sides of the neck rather than following its natural angle.

The solution

This portable neck pillow integrates the compression mechanism directly into the product, eliminating the need for external bags.

  1. The pillow body consists of a nape support body positioned behind the neck and two side supports: a first neck side support body and a second neck side support body. An opening is formed between the free ends of these two side supports.
  2. A storage belt is permanently fixed at one end to the terminal end of the first neck side support body.
  3. The storage belt carries a first connector, and the terminal end of the first neck side support body is equipped with a second connector.
  4. To compress the pillow, the storage belt is wound sequentially around the outside of the second neck side support body, across the back of the nape support body, and around the first neck side support body.
  5. The first connector mates with the second connector. As they join, the storage belt yields to the compression, tightly binding the second neck side support body, the nape support body, and the first neck side support body together into a significantly reduced volume.

Who it is for

  • Travel accessory brands looking for a self-packing neck pillow to differentiate their catalog from standard memory foam U-pillows that require separate pouches.
  • Airline and hospitality buyers sourcing compact amenity items for premium cabins or hotel welcome kits where storage space in packaging is limited.
  • Amazon sellers and e-commerce retailers targeting frequent flyers and commuters who search for space-saving travel gear that solves the bulkiness complaint found in standard pillow reviews.
  • Promotional product wholesalers needing a practical, customizable travel item for corporate gifting, where the outer cover and belt offer clear areas for branding.

11Nape support bodyRests against the back of the user’s neck; features a raised top portion for head support.
12First neck side support bodySupports one side of the neck; anchors the storage belt and holds the second connector.
13Second neck side support bodySupports the other side of the neck; may hold a third connector to close the front opening.
2Storage beltWraps around the support bodies to apply compression when packed.
21First connectorLocated on the storage belt; mates with the second connector to secure the bundle.
22Second connectorLocated on the end of the first neck side support body; receives the first connector.
23Third connectorOptional; located on the second neck side support body to bridge the front opening.
3PillowcaseOuter cover with an installation entrance and a slide fastener to seal the core inside.
4Pillow coreThe internal filling inserted through the installation entrance.

Operating steps

  1. Unfasten the connectors - release the first connector from the second connector to loosen the storage belt.
  2. Unwrap the belt - pull the storage belt away from the nape support body and the second neck side support body, allowing the pillow body to expand to its full shape.
  3. Place around the neck - position the nape support body behind the neck, letting the first and second neck side support bodies rest on either side. If present, connect the third connector to the first connector across the opening to prevent the head from falling forward.
  4. Pack after use - wrap the storage belt tightly around the second neck side support body, the nape support body, and the first neck side support body, compressing the material inward.
  5. Secure the bundle - mate the first connector on the belt with the second connector on the first neck side support body to lock the compressed shape.

Applications

Long-haul flights

Passengers use the pillow to support their necks during sleep in economy or business class seats. When landing, they wrap the storage belt around the support bodies, compress the pillow, and clip the connectors together. The reduced volume allows the pillow to slide easily into a personal item or carry-on bag without forcing other belongings out.

Train and bus commuting

Daily commuters resting on trains or buses need quick setup and teardown. The integrated belt means there is no separate stuff sack to drop on the floor or misplace between stops. The angled inner surfaces of the side supports conform to the neck, providing steady lateral support even when the vehicle sways.

Road trips and driving breaks

Drivers taking rest stops can inflate or unpack traditional pillows, but repacking them takes time. With this design, the user simply unclips the connectors, lets the core expand, and rests. Returning to the car requires only wrapping the belt and snapping the connectors shut, keeping the cabin free of bulky loose items.

Office and desk resting

Workers resting their heads at their desks during short breaks benefit from the raised top portion of the nape support body. Afterward, the pillow compresses down small enough to store inside a desk drawer rather than occupying chair space or requiring a dedicated shelf.

Corporate travel gifting

Companies distributing travel kits to employees or clients need items that look professional and pack efficiently. The removable pillowcase, sealed by a slide fastener, allows the outer fabric to be customized or replaced, while the self-compressing feature ensures the gift box or kit bag remains compact.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy-duty orthopedic support - this design focuses on portability and compression for travel, not rigid medical positioning for severe cervical conditions.
  • Outdoor camping pillows - the materials described, such as flannelette or fiber covers and memory foam cores, are intended for indoor or transit use rather than rough outdoor environments where waterproof, abrasion-resistant shells are required.
  • Infant and toddler use - the dimensions and compression mechanism are designed for adult or older youth neck proportions, not for infant safety standards.

Frequently asked questions

How does the pillow compress without a separate bag?

A storage belt is permanently attached to the end of the first neck side support body. You wrap this belt around the second side support, across the back of the nape support, and around the first side support again. Mating the first and second connectors on the belt and the support body pulls everything tight, reducing the pillow’s volume into a bound bundle.

What types of connectors are used?

The patent describes using either shoulder strap pin and female threads (snap-style buckles) or velcro hook and villus pieces. The choice depends on the compression force required by the specific core material.

Which core fillings are available?

The claims list slow-recovery sponge (including memory foam and zero-pressure variants), natural emulsion (latex), foam particles, cotton, feather, or PP (polypropylene) pillow cores. The core is inserted through an installation entrance on the pillowcase.

Is the cover removable for washing?

Yes. The pillowcase features an installation entrance sealed by a slide fastener. You unzip the fastener to remove the pillow core, allowing the cover and the attached storage belt to be cleaned according to the fabric’s care instructions.

How does the design support the neck better than a basic U-shape?

The top of the nape support body raises up to form a support portion that catches the head when it tilts backward. Additionally, the inside surfaces of the first and second neck side support bodies feature angled portions (rakes) that mirror each other, adapting to the natural tilt of the user’s neck rather than pressing flat against it.

Can the front opening be closed?

The patent describes an optional third connector on the end of the second neck side support body. This third connector mates with the first connector on the storage belt to bridge the opening between the two side supports, preventing the head from slipping forward.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and is lapsed (terminated for non-payment of annual fees, recorded 2025-04-15), so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. Travel pillows may be covered by other US or international patents - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
