Motorized Rocking Stroller That Rocks by Turning Its Wheels

Parents rock a stroller back and forth by hand for a reason: the gentle motion settles a baby. This design does the rocking with the wheels themselves. A motor in a small box on the frame turns a crank disc; a link from the disc swings an arm on the wheel axle back and forth, so the wheels roll a short way forward and back and the whole seat rocks in place. A clutch on the wheel - a spring-loaded pin and a cam switch - connects the drive for rocking mode and disconnects it for pushing. Later versions put the motor and battery in boxes beside the wheels and add an electrically controlled brake.

  • China utility model - given up; related China record active

Rocks with its wheels

A motor-driven crank swings the wheels back and forth, so the seat rocks in place.

🔌

Two modes

A clutch connects the drive for rocking and frees the wheels for normal pushing.

Electric brake option

Later versions add a brake pin driven by an actuator to lock the wheel.

Hands free

The patent's aim: automatic rocking that frees the parent's hands.

The problem

Many babies settle when they are rocked, and parents end up pushing a stroller or rocker back and forth for long stretches - in the living room, at a café, beside the bed. Electric baby swings and bouncers exist, but they are separate, bulky products, and most strollers have no powered motion at all. The patent asks whether the stroller’s own wheels could do the rocking, with a simple drive the parent can switch off to push normally.

The solution

The patent adds a compact drive between the frame and the wheels:

  1. A support frame (1) with a seat has wheel mounts (11) for the wheels (2).
  2. An electric drive (3) is fixed to the frame: a drive motor (31) turns a crank disc (4).
  3. A link (5) is pinned to the disc away from its center; its other end is pinned, also off-center, to a swing arm (6) on the wheel axle. As the disc turns, the swing arm rocks back and forth, so the wheels roll a short way forward and back.
  4. A clutch (7) between the swing arm and the wheel connects or frees the drive. In one version a lock ring (71) on the wheel has holes (710); a spring-loaded lock pin (72) enters a hole when the clutch switch (73) is turned, and a cam on the switch pulls it out.
  5. In the first version the motor, disc, link and swing arm sit in a drive box (14) on a cross bar (121) between the wheel mounts.

Who it is for

  • Stroller and juvenile-products brands looking for a feature that sets a pram or bassinet stroller apart on the shelf and in video.
  • Baby rocker and bouncer makers wanting a rocking seat that also rolls from room to room.
  • Smart-nursery and baby-tech companies that pair motion with apps, timers or sound.
  • Importers for Asian-style “rocking chair carts” - wheeled baby seats that are pushed indoors and rocked to sleep.

How it works

The main parts

1Support frameFrame with seat and wheel mounts (11).
31Drive motorTurns the crank disc.
4Crank discCarries the link pin off-center.
5LinkTurns the disc’s rotation into a back-and-forth push.
6Swing armOn the wheel side; rocks the wheel forward and back.
7ClutchConnects the swing arm to the wheel or frees it.
71, 710Lock ring and holesOn the wheel; receive the lock pin.
72, 73Lock pin and switchSpring pin and cam switch (731 raised part, 732 recess) that engage or release the drive.
81-83Brake (later versions)Brake pin, actuator and control that lock the wheel.

Rocking mode and pushing mode

  1. Rocking mode - turn the clutch switch so the lock pin enters the wheel’s lock ring. Switch on: the motor turns, the swing arm rocks, the wheels move a little forward and back, and the seat rocks in place.
  2. Pushing mode - turn the switch the other way; the cam pulls the pin out and the wheels turn freely.
  3. Parking - in the later versions an electric brake pin locks the wheel.

Patent figure 8 - clutch detail in pushing mode: lock ring (71), holes (710), lock pin (72) and switch (73) released.

Four versions

The patent shows four layouts: a drive box between the wheels (versions 1 and 2, with different clutches), and two layouts where the motor sits in a box beside one wheel and the battery in a box beside the other, with a brake device (versions 3 and 4). The patent notes that the drive keeps the wheels from turning further when the swing is fast, for safety.

Patent figure 18 - third version: drive and battery boxes at the wheels and a brake device.

Applications

Living-room naps

A wheeled seat that rocks the baby to sleep while the parent eats or works nearby, then rolls to the bedroom.

Cafés and visits

A stroller that can rock on its own at the table instead of being pushed back and forth for half an hour.

Bedside rocking

A bassinet stroller parked beside the bed at night, rocking gently on a timer.

Twins and busy households

When one parent handles two babies, one seat can rock itself.

Grandparents and caregivers

Rocking without repeated bending and pushing is easier for older caregivers.

Where it is less suitable

  • Unsupervised sleep - rocking seats are not a substitute for a flat, safe sleep space, and products must be labeled accordingly.
  • Slopes and uneven floors - wheel-driven rocking needs a level floor and a reliable brake when stopped.

Frequently asked questions

How does it rock without a separate swing frame?

The motor turns a crank disc; a link from the disc swings an arm at the wheel back and forth. The wheels roll a short way forward and back, so the whole stroller or rocker moves gently in place.

How do I switch between rocking and pushing?

A clutch at the wheel does this. In rocking mode a spring-loaded pin locks the wheel to the drive; turning the clutch switch pulls the pin out so the wheels roll freely for normal pushing.

How far and how fast does it rock?

The patent sets out the mechanism, not the numbers. The rocking distance and speed are set by the crank and motor in design, kept gentle and checked on prototypes.

Does it have a brake?

The third and fourth versions in the patent add a brake: a brake pin driven by an actuator locks the wheel. A production version would also keep a manual foot brake as required by stroller standards.

What powers it?

A motor with a battery. In the later versions the battery sits in a box beside one wheel. Battery size and run time are set in design.

Can the baby sleep in it while it rocks?

The product should be marketed for rocking under supervision. If it includes a bassinet for sleep, it must meet the bassinet rules and provide a flat sleep surface; the rocking function and labeling are designed around those rules.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China, so it does not restrict the design in the US. The utility model was given up, but a related Chinese record is active, so making or selling it in China may need the owner’s permission. Motorized strollers and self-rocking infant products are actively patented in the US - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
