Sealed LED Fishing Lamp with Integrated Heat Sink and Weighted Base

Standard outdoor lights often fail due to water ingress and poor heat dissipation, leading to short lifespans and flickering. This patented design addresses these issues by integrating the LED light source directly onto a polygonal lamppost that acts as a heat sink, ensuring better thermal performance. The entire assembly is sealed within a transparent shade, protected by a weighted base that keeps the unit stable on vessels or platforms, while a specialized threading hole with an elastic ring seal prevents moisture from entering the electrical connections.

The problem

Outdoor and marine lighting faces two major challenges: thermal management and environmental protection. Traditional lamps often isolate the heat-generating LED components inside glass or plastic housings without adequate conduction paths, causing overheating and premature failure. Additionally, standard cable entries are prone to water leakage, which corrodes internal circuits and creates safety hazards. On boats or floating docks, lightweight fixtures can tip over easily, requiring frequent adjustment or secure mounting hardware that adds complexity. There is a need for a robust, self-stabilizing light fixture that efficiently dissipates heat and maintains a watertight seal at all connection points.

The solution

  1. A lamppost (10) made in a polygonal rib column structure provides multiple lateral surfaces. This shape increases surface area for heat dissipation.
  2. The LED light source is fixed directly onto the outer peripheral surface of the lamppost within an annular sealing cavity, allowing the post itself to act as a primary heat sink.
  3. A transparent lamp shade (20) encloses the light source, protecting it from physical damage while allowing light transmission.
  4. A pedestal (30) supports the bottom of the assembly and contains a weighted item (90) to lower the center of gravity for stability.
  5. A top cover (40) seals the upper end and features a specialized threading hole with an elastic ring and plugging block to ensure a watertight seal for the conductor wire.
  6. An overpressure protection circuit is included to safeguard the power supply during voltage spikes.

Who it is for

  • Marine Equipment Manufacturers: Brands producing deck lights, dock markers, or vessel-specific illumination who need rugged, waterproof solutions.
  • Industrial Lighting Suppliers: Companies supplying high-bay or exterior floodlights where thermal efficiency and dust/water resistance are critical specifications.
  • Aquaculture Operators: Businesses needing durable, energy-efficient lighting for fish farms or bait attraction systems that operate in wet, corrosive environments.
  • Outdoor Infrastructure Contractors: Firms installing public park or pathway lighting that requires self-weighted bases to minimize installation hardware and maintenance.

Operating Steps

  1. Heat Dissipation: The LED crystals (72) generate heat, which conducts directly into the aluminum or metal alloy lamppost (10). The polygonal shape increases the surface area exposed to air, enhancing cooling.
  2. Light Transmission: Light passes through the transparent shade (20), which is sealed against the pedestal and top cover using gaskets to prevent moisture entry.
  3. Stability: The weighted item (90) at the bottom keeps the lamp upright even if the mounting surface vibrates or tilts slightly.
  4. Power Connection: Electrical wires pass through the central intercommunicating hole (50) and exit via the top cover’s threading hole. The elastic ring and plugging block compress around the wire, creating a watertight seal.

Applications

Marine Deck Lighting

Boats require lights that withstand salt spray and vibration. The weighted base allows for freestanding placement on decks without complex bolting, while the sealed cable entry prevents corrosion from waves.

Dock and Pier Markers

Pier edges need visible markers that survive high humidity and accidental impacts. The robust transparent shade and integrated heat sink ensure long operational life with minimal maintenance visits.

Aquaculture Bait Attraction

Fish farming operations use lights to attract plankton or guide fish. The energy-efficient LED design reduces electricity costs, and the waterproof construction handles constant submersion risks near water lines.

Industrial Warehouse Perimeters

Exterior warehouse areas need reliable floodlighting. The polygonal heat sink design allows for higher wattage LEDs without overheating, maintaining consistent brightness throughout the night.

Where it is less suitable

  • Indoor Decorative Fixtures: The industrial, utilitarian aesthetic and heavy weighting are not designed for residential interior styling.
  • High-Vibration Aircraft Mounts: While stable on ships, the specific mechanical locking might not meet aviation-grade vibration certification standards without additional engineering.
  • Solar-Powered Remote Units: The patent describes a wired connection method; adapting it for standalone solar batteries would require significant redesign of the power input system.

Frequently asked questions

How does the lamp dissipate heat?

The LED light source is mounted directly onto the outer surface of the polygonal lamppost. The post acts as a heat sink, transferring heat away from the LEDs into the surrounding air. The multi-sided shape increases the surface area for more effective cooling compared to a simple cylindrical post.

Is the lamp fully waterproof?

The patent describes a sealed structure with an annular cavity and specific sealing mechanisms for the cable entry. However, achieving a specific IP rating (like IP65 or IP67) depends on the final manufacturing tolerances, gasket materials, and assembly quality. We recommend prototyping and testing for the desired water resistance level.

Why is there a weighted base?

The weighted item inside the pedestal lowers the center of gravity. This makes the lamp stable when placed on vibrating surfaces, such as boat decks or industrial platforms, reducing the need for complex mounting brackets or bolts.

What materials are used for the shade?

The patent mentions a transparent lamp shade, often made of acrylic or similar clear plastics in this type of application. For production, we can customize this to polycarbonate for higher impact resistance or tempered glass for scratch resistance, depending on your environment.

Can the electrical connection be modified?

Yes. The design includes a threading hole with an elastic ring and plugging block for the wire. This can be adapted to accept different connector types or cable gauges, provided the sealing integrity is maintained during the modification.

Does it include dimming controls?

The patent focuses on the structural and thermal aspects. Dimming functionality depends on the selected LED driver. You can specify drivers that support PWM or analog dimming during the customization phase.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and has lapsed, so it does not restrict the design in the US or in China. However, marine and industrial LED lighting fields have many active US patents. We strongly recommend a freedom-to-operate check to ensure your specific implementation does not infringe on other intellectual property rights.
