Adjustable Snap-Fit Animal Muzzle

One muzzle for many snout sizes. The cone-shaped sleeve is a trapezoid of soft material that wraps around the snout and closes with rows of snap buttons, so it can be set tighter or looser; a ratchet buckle sizes the neck strap, and three hook-and-loop straps link sleeve and collar for quick fitting.

The problem

Most muzzles adjust only at the neck strap. The part that goes over the snout comes in fixed sizes, so owners, groomers and vets need many sizes on hand - and a muzzle that is too loose slips off, while one that is too tight is uncomfortable.

The solution

This muzzle makes both parts adjustable:

  1. The snout sleeve (2) is cut as a flat trapezoid of fabric or soft plastic. Wrapped around the snout it forms a cone. One edge has a row of snap buttons (21); the other edge has several rows of matching studs (22), so the sleeve can be closed at different diameters.
  2. The neck strap (1) runs through a ratchet buckle (4): it tightens in one direction and is released with a small lever.
  3. Three connecting straps (3) join the wide end of the sleeve to the neck strap. Each is split in two (31, 32) and closes with hook-and-loop, so the sleeve and collar can be put on one at a time and then joined.

Patent figure 1 - snout sleeve (2) with snap buttons (21) and stud rows (22), connecting straps (3, 31, 32), neck strap (1) and ratchet buckle (4).

Who it is for

  • Pet-accessory brands and Amazon sellers wanting a muzzle that covers more dog sizes with fewer SKUs.
  • Groomers, boarding kennels and veterinary clinics that handle many animals of different sizes.
  • Farm and livestock suppliers - the patent was written for dogs and pigs.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Neck strapGoes around the neck; its free end has small one-way teeth (44).
2Snout sleeveTrapezoid of fabric or soft plastic wrapped into a cone over the snout.
21Snap buttonsOne row on the inside of one edge of the sleeve.
22Stud rowsSeveral rows on the outside of the other edge - choose a row to set the size.
3Connecting strapsThree straps between the wide end of the sleeve and the neck strap.
31, 32Strap halvesOne half fixed to the neck strap, one to the sleeve, joined with hook-and-loop.
4Ratchet buckleHolds the neck strap at any length.
41-43Buckle housing, spring catch, release leverInside the buckle.

Fitting it, step by step

  1. Put on the neck strap. Thread the free end through the buckle (4) and pull until it sits snugly.
  2. Wrap the sleeve (2) around the snout and press the snap buttons (21) into the row of studs (22) that gives a secure but comfortable fit.
  3. Join sleeve and collar by pressing the halves of the three connecting straps (31, 32) together. Their hook-and-loop also lets you fine-tune the length.
  4. To remove, open the hook-and-loop straps, unsnap the sleeve, and press the buckle lever to release the neck strap.

The ratchet buckle

Adjustable Snap-Fit Animal Muzzle - Patent drawing - the buckle on the neck strap
Patent figure 2 - ratchet buckle on the neck strap: housing (41), spring catch (42) and release lever (43).

The buckle works like a cable tie that can be undone. Inside the housing (41) a spring catch (42) rides over angled teeth (44) on the strap.

Adjustable Snap-Fit Animal Muzzle - Patent drawing - catch and teeth
Patent figure 3 - the catch (42) meets the angled teeth (44) on the strap (1); the lever (43) presses it to release.
  • Pulling the strap tighter works freely - the catch slides over the slope of each tooth.
  • The strap cannot loosen by itself - the catch stops against the steep side of a tooth.
  • Pressing the release lever (43) lifts the catch so the strap can be let out.

Applications

Grooming salons

Nail trims and grooming of nervous dogs. One adjustable muzzle covers many breeds, so fewer sizes hang on the wall.

Veterinary clinics and animal shelters

Short procedures and handling of unfamiliar animals; the two-step fitting lets staff put the collar on first and close the sleeve quickly.

Boarding kennels and daycare

Kept on hand for introductions and handling.

Pet owners

Vet visits, travel and situations where a muzzle is required. One product covers a growing puppy across several sizes.

Livestock handling

The patent was written for dogs and pigs. A tougher version can suit handling of pigs and other animals during treatment.

Where it is less suitable

  • Long wear, exercise or hot weather - a closed sleeve muzzle limits panting and drinking. For longer wear a basket-style muzzle is the safer choice.
  • Very short-nosed breeds (pugs, bulldogs) - a cone sleeve does not stay on well; special flat-face muzzles exist for them.

Frequently asked questions

How many sizes does one muzzle cover?

That depends on the sleeve length and the number of stud rows. A range is designed with you - for example small, medium and large products that each cover several breeds.

Can a dog pant or drink while wearing it?

A closed sleeve muzzle limits panting and drinking, so it is meant for short, supervised use such as grooming or vet visits. A mesh or perforated sleeve can be specified to improve airflow.

Is it hard to put on a nervous dog?

The collar and sleeve go on separately and are then joined by the hook-and-loop straps, which makes fitting quicker than threading a one-piece muzzle.

Can it be washed?

Fabric and neoprene versions can be hand-washed; TPU versions wipe clean.

Can the ratchet buckle be replaced with a normal buckle?

Yes. A standard side-release buckle with a slider is an option.

Is it suitable for livestock?

The patent was written for dogs and pigs. A heavier version can be developed for livestock handling.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent was filed only in China and lapsed in 2020, so it does not restrict anyone. Other muzzle designs may be patented - see Patent & Production - so we recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
