Multifunctional Screwdriver with Internal Bit Storage and Spring-Loaded Slide

Traditional multi-bit drivers require loose bits in a separate case or pocket, leading to lost tools and slow swaps. This design integrates storage directly into the handle. The bits are mounted on a slide bar that retracts into the handle's hollow chamber. A spring-loaded ejection system allows the user to press a button on the end cap to push the bit tray out, revealing all stored bits at once. This keeps the tool compact, prevents bit loss, and speeds up changes between different screw types.

Multifunctional Screwdriver with Internal Bit Storage and Spring-Loaded Slide - product render

📦

Integrated Storage

Handle doubles as a case, storing multiple bits internally to prevent loss.

⚡

Spring Ejection

Pressing the end cap releases a latch, popping the bit tray out for quick access.

🔒

Secure Locking

A self-lock pin and elastic card connector keep the tray closed during use.

🔄

Quick Swapping

Bits are fixed on a slide bar, allowing easy removal and replacement of the entire set.

The problem

Standard screwdrivers require users to carry loose bits separately or use bulky bit sets. Bits are easily lost, and switching between sizes often involves rummaging through pockets or cases, slowing down work. Existing multi-bit drivers often have external holders that snag on clothing or fail to protect the bits from dirt. There is a need for a compact tool that keeps bits secure, accessible, and protected within the grip itself without increasing the overall profile significantly.

The solution

  1. The tool consists of an extension bar (1) with a screwdriver bit (2) inserted at one end and a handle (3) at the other.
  2. The handle features a cylindrical accommodating chamber (31) sealed by a seal cap (4).
  3. A slide bar (13) extends from the seal cap into the chamber, carrying a storage seat (5) that holds multiple bits.
  4. A pop-up spring (8) sits at the bottom of the chamber, pushing against the slide (9) attached to the slide bar.
  5. A locking mechanism involving a self-lock pin (121) and an elastic card connector (71) holds the slide bar in the retracted position.
  6. Pressing the button (42) on the seal cap disengages the lock, allowing the spring to eject the bit tray outward.

Who it is for

  • DIY Homeowners: Need a single, tidy tool for occasional repairs without losing small bits.
  • Professional Technicians: Require quick access to common bit sizes while keeping their pockets free.
  • Tool Kit Manufacturers: Looking to add value to basic kits with integrated storage solutions.
  • E-commerce Sellers: Selling compact, high-margin hand tools that differentiate from generic screwdrivers.

How it works

The main parts

No.PartWhat it does
1Extension BarConnects the bit to the handle; provides length.
2Screwdriver BitThe working tip, inserted into the extension bar.
3HandleMain body containing the storage chamber.
4Seal CapCloses the handle; includes the release button.
5Storage SeatHolds the spare bits on the slide bar.
8Pop-up SpringPushes the slide bar out when unlocked.
9SlideGuide piece moving along fixed stops.
121Self-Lock PinEngages with the clamping seat to hold the tray closed.
71Elastic Card ConnectorReleases the lock when the button is pressed.

Operating Steps

  1. Closed State: The slide bar is fully retracted into the handle. The self-lock pin engages with the elastic card connector, held by the compression of the pop-up spring.
  2. Unlocking: The user presses the button (42) on the seal cap. This action moves the self-lock pin, disengaging it from the clamping seat.
  3. Ejection: With the lock released, the pop-up spring expands, pushing the slide bar and storage seat outward from the handle.
  4. Access: The bits on the storage seat are now exposed for selection or swapping.
  5. Closing: The user pushes the slide bar back into the chamber until the self-lock pin snaps into the clamping seat again.

Applications

Household Repairs

Ideal for assembling furniture or fixing appliances where different screw types are encountered. The user can quickly switch between Phillips and flathead bits without searching for them.

Electronics Assembly

Technicians working on small devices benefit from having precise micro-bits stored safely inside the handle, protecting tips from damage and contamination.

Automotive Maintenance

Useful for tightening interior panels or battery terminals. The compact size fits in tight spaces, and the integrated storage ensures the right bit is always available.

Tool Kits and Promotional Items

Manufacturers can brand these handles easily. They serve as practical gifts or entry-level tools in comprehensive home repair kits.

Where it is less suitable

  • Heavy-Duty Industrial Use: The spring-based ejection mechanism may not withstand extreme torque or harsh chemical environments compared to solid steel ratchets.
  • High-Vibration Environments: While locked, prolonged vibration might theoretically loosen the latch if tolerances are not precise, though the patent describes a positive mechanical lock.
  • Single-Bit Tasks: For jobs requiring only one specific bit, a standard simple screwdriver is lighter and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the bits out?

You press the button located on the end cap of the handle. This releases the internal lock, and a spring automatically pushes the bit tray out of the handle, exposing the stored bits for you to grab.

Can I change the bits?

Yes. The bits are held in a storage seat on the slide bar. You can remove individual bits or swap the entire slide assembly depending on your design needs. The active bit is inserted into the extension bar at the front.

Is the mechanism durable?

The patent describes a mechanical lock using a pin and elastic card. Durability depends on the materials used (e.g., POM vs. nylon for sliders, stainless steel for springs). Properly designed, it should withstand thousands of cycles.

What size bits fit?

The patent does not specify a universal bit size. In production, the storage seat holes are molded to match standard hex-shank bits (commonly 1/4 inch). Custom bit sizes can be accommodated by changing the mold.

Does it feel bulky?

The handle is cylindrical and houses the mechanism internally. While slightly thicker than a basic stick screwdriver to accommodate the chamber, it remains compact enough for one-handed operation and pocket carry.

Can this design be made and sold in the US?

The patent is filed only in China and is currently in force there. It has no US counterpart, so it does not restrict making or selling in the US. However, other US patents may cover similar storage mechanisms. We recommend a freedom-to-operate check before volume production.
